to VATS or not to VATS?

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 3:14 pm

I found F3 to be way to easy even without using VATS...So I will probably try to live without it. Thoughts?

Ramp up to very hard man. Although i like to switch between the two VATS is similar to a skill, you usually need to build your character around it to maximize effectiveness.

Note: Scottish Vault Dweller, those caps are completely unnecessary, not that i don't want to hear what you have to say, just in the future, normal typing would be appreciated.

Always use it. The last thing I need is another FPS. They release like 30 a year. Running backwards while shooting is silly. FPS's are online only for me.

The poll doesn't give a whole lot of wiggle room with options, although from what I've seen of the Iron Sights they seem very capable. That said I think my use of VATS will be strictly for scouting types of operations otherwise I'm using the Iron Sights Obsidian worked so hard putting together for us. :tops:

On and off. I'll play in both VATS and real time, just like in Fallout 3.

I would use VATS against really fast enemies who are in my face... or if I just feel like it. Sniping from a long way away was easier without using VATS... especially if they are too far away for VATS to even target them. Evergreen Mills.... stand on the canyon edge and shoot everyone from a mile away, good times.

Yeah i agree the poll options are rather limited. I like irons too, but any well implemented sight would work for me. I think VATS is very necessary for some people though. Shooting in a video game is much easier than in real life because bullets fly in a straight line, uncoordinated people can struggle with a controller interface be it a keyboard and mouse or game pad. So, for those of us that aiming through irons is as simple as it would be to point a finger at the target it isn't that way for everyone.

Always use VATS. :gun:

(I plan to find the bound key for Ironsights and unbind it, or change it to "scroll lock" or something out of the way).

Why would you do that? (Just an innocent question btw :cryvaultboy: )

I must admit I did love shooting grenades mid flight, try doing that outside VATS.

both? Where's that option? I usually use vats for crippling limbs and whatnots.

Innocent answer being, that while I really like FPS games in general, I'm not to keen on FPS play in any Fallout title, and honestly don't plan to actually use the Iron-sight mode in the game.

*Except as something to study in the GECK. I'm very interested in camera control in FO3 & NV; Its not something I've spent much time looking into yet, but its something I want to explore in detail.

(The other reason being, that IMO no Fallout game has any technical need for adding an Iron Sight mode while retaining the stat & skill effects of the PC ~they contradict and should be mutually excluding.)

Oh, well I suppose that would be understandable. I still wish it had the F3 FPS aim, that was mainly my combat use, but at the same time, I have never played an FPS, aside from Bioshock, so Ironsights might be a problem for me. But, I learned to use F3s aiming Flawlessly. If Ironsights is the only way to fine aim, I'll just have to learn to use that too.

Depends on a few things really...

1. How fluid and responsive the free aim is. (FO3's was horrible, made me use VATS a lot more than I would have liked)
2. How many enemies I'm facing.
3. Just how much of a difference there is between VATS and free aim in terms of effectivity.

I love using VATS but mainly for guns. If I am melee or unarmed or big guns or fully automatic guns I use no VATS. Single shot rifles and pistols and sometimes shotguns yes VATS.

Myself, I have trouble with the fast-paced action-y bits during Fallout 3's combat (and chances are that's not going to change anytime soon.) Something about trying to keep an enemy in my cross-hairs long enough to shoot something and hit, while also trying to avoid enemy fire, and still be even moderately tactical about the whole thing - generally means that all I'm really doing is standing still and pumping lead as fast as I can.

Just not my cup of tea.

So VATS is something I kind of make heavy use of in these new Fallout games. I'm rather glad they have it. Because otherwise I'd be kind of crippled in a game like this - without at the very least something akin to how Mass Effect let you pause the game at will, and at least catch your breath and figure out what's going on.

I think it's a relatively new game mechanic, that takes the Bullet Time concept in a new direction - and like most new ideas, there's plenty of room for refinement. But if anything, I think any problems with VATS the way we know it thus far point to reasons to improve and build upon the existing concept; and not necessarily scrap the whole thing altogether.

I just hope they fixed the "delay" on VATS that they implemented with that one patch, makes it annoying, but I use it when I need it, usually I'll open up with vats and finish them with free aim or the other way around, it's a nice addition to the game because if you only use free aim I think the game would get a bit tiresome, the VATS cam usually gives me a chuckle.

VATS, to me, feels like something put in game so console players can still hit targets with their slow aiming joysticks without having to make it too easy for PC players. Since I'm playing on PC, and thusly have a mouse, I won't need such a crutch.

I might use it once or twice just to check out the new additions. Then I'll remap the key to something useful.

well VATS is awesome but FO3 was easy because of the too many skill points, too many perks, too many SPECIAL points and not enough high firepower weilding enemies, even at level 20 or 30 raiders still had lead pipes and not enough other enemies had high firepower, VATS wasn't the reason FO3 was easy. but as far using VATS, it all depends, sometimes i use it sometimes i don't, sometimes not using it is more efficient and sometimes using it is more efficient it just depends on the weapon and situation etc.

In general I like the merge of both RPG and FPS mechanics. Its all about getting it just right for each side.
All about compromises that one is.

My VATS usage is pretty random, I imagine it will be the same. I like it (VATS).

Ideally I'm going to be at range in an encounter, and long range sniper action I found VATS much less accurate than just potshotting. Up close and personal I like it much more, with all the crit perks and high Luck, there's exploding heads and flying limbs galore.

And with MMM Increased Increased Spawns, or even Increases Spawns, VATS is real life saver.

I hope MMM gets ported fast. I heart MMM. Good 'ol Marine Marauder Medivac...oh wait. Martigens Monster/Mutant Mod.

I play with a controller on PC MW2 i still have my 2.4 K/D like i said i think it is more to do with people who aren't coordinated. Besides vats was in there before fallout was even an fps.
