Weapons,Mods and Ammo. Mega thread #2

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:45 am

This is where I feel damage should be a range. I can "hit" you in the head with a .357 and only take off a small portion of your earlobe. What would this be like in game terms? 1hp? There'll always be the exceptions to the rule. If the base damage is just slightly less than insta head kill, then it doesn't take much of a modifier to put it over the edge. But it would allow for those rare times when head shots don't kill or incapacitate.

As for the heirarchy of rounds, this is the stuff we ain't gonna agree on so I'll let it go.

Well now you're talking about hitboxes and the like. My model for the ideal game wouldn't use hitboxes, hit calculations would be done on a pixel to pixel basis. The body and all its tissues would be modeled in a complex manner, so if you just graze someone and blow off their ear, the game knows this. Remember, New Vegas is going to have a very simplistic damage model. You can repeatedly shoot someone in the leg and then have them drop dead in a very unrealistic manner.

ugh. guns guns guns. i believe the melee system in FO3 was a total jip. could have been ages better. in FO3 you couldnt really give a brutal to the point message. they had way too many gun perks. way too many guns. it felt like a gun-ho game with a sprinkle of melee joy. hopefully NV will be different

Well, there is the special move every melee weapon is getting. That's a bone to throw you right?

Melee weapons are going to get their due this time around. There's at least 15 or 20 of them, and they get special moves. Things should turn out fine for my Melee/Unarmed character.

Melee/unarmed is good in theory so long as the AI does not insist on blowing up its own guys all the fracking time just because one guy loves his exposives while the other two rush in with bats and swords drawn

I would agree with pretty much all you said, but I still think headshots should be insta-kills for .357 and above. because let's face it, in the game, incapacitation is equivalent to a kill, and while many people have survived headshots, I doubt they were in any condition to keep going after getting hit in the head. A .22 or 9mm might not incapacitate someone especially if they were high on something with adrenaline going crazy, and there was that guy who got hit in the back of the head with a .22 and never knew, but if anything else hits them in the head, the impact force, equivalent to a punch to the head (which could by itself knock someone out) combined with the massive trauma a bullet to the head will cause should definitely incapacitate them. And in the game, all this would need to be represented by would be some twitching on the body for a few minutes until they expire, because people usually only survive a headshot if they get immediate medical care.

I also think that .357 mag should be above 10mm and .45, because .357 sig, 10mm, and .45 ACP all have generally similar wound profiles. .357 and .44 would be similar due to their "magnum" characteristics- that being longer cartridges and hotter loads.

Actually you can keep fighting after you've been shot in the head lol

TRUE STORY-
A close friend of mine was shot in the head and survived and killed the person. This is what happened.

It was late at night and someone knocked on his hotel room and when he answered the door a gun was in his face. The man with the gun proceeded to rob him and his girl. Just as he was about to leave with the gun still pointed at my friend He then pulled the trigger.."click"

No round was chambered and caught the thief by suprise so my friend took advantage of this and attacked him. They wrestled around for a bit and then(as he explained it to me) my friend remembers hearing a loud bang n' everything went black for a lil bit.

The thief ran and my friend ran over to the bed flipped over the mattress grabbed is .45 n' ran out after the guy.

The last thing my friend remembered was unloading his gun into the back of the getaway car. His girl came outside and found my friend unconscious in the middle of the street clenching the .45 still with a death grip.

Later on when he regained consciousness, through the graqevine he found out he hit the thief 3 times that night and was bleeding out somewhere.

This is a 100% true story. I don't lie.

You should see the scar it's crazy lol

That's pretty insane. Adrenaline does crazy things. But I wonder what gun the thief was using.

i get the feeling it may have been a small round, like a .22. maybe a 9mm.

fallout_addict, your friend is damned lucky he didn't die. also has a lot of guts to get up after being shot in the head and shoot the guy three times.

well it is a modern age game, naturally guns play a central role, it′s unavoidable melee ends up second fiddle.

I watched an episode of I Survived... Where the guy was in a relationship with a scary woman (who was wearing the pants in the relationship so to speak) and she shot him twice (May have been three) times in the head because he didn't want to be with her anymore, the bullets didn't even faze him. (I think they were most likely 9mm) He was shot twice in the head an was still trying to talk his ex out of her rage-filled state.

I wouldn't neccessarily call 9x19mm a small round. Any round that needs a fully locked breech (in a handgun) is a pretty powerful round. Smaller than 9mm you can use a straight blowback operating system, but the pressures are too great above Browning's 9mm short (.380). Most 9mm handguns use short-recoil actions with a locked breech.

I was generalizing also. There are quite a few rounds smaller than .380 that need locked breeches. 7.62 Tokarev quickly comes to mind, but the gist is mostly true. Under 9x19mm, most handguns use smaller powered rounds and operate with blowback style actions. Above, they use some sort of locking breech.

I always preferred the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_B-26_Marauder over the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-24_Liberator, but that's cool too. Oh! You meant the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FP-45_Liberator. I gotcha now. Well in that case, I'm more of a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welrod guy.

The M-1 Garand is in right?

The MP-40, the M2 Flamethrower, the PO8 Luger and the FjG42are cool, to count just a few of the numerous awesome weapons from WW2.

Off the top of my head, WWII era weapons in are: M1, M3, GP35, and if the FO3 Combat Shotgun is in, the PPSh. :hubbahubba: I think that's it. Right?

Wait, the PPSh-41 Sub-Machine Gun is confirmed in or is it just the Shotgun version FO3 had? :tops:

Actually neither the Combat shotgun or it's evil game version twin, the PPSh, is confirmed in. I was makin funnie. :celebration: But I can attest to the Mosin-Nagant 1891/30's incredible coconut shredding capabilities. The .30-06 from the Garand just went right through them, but the 7.62x54R from the Mosin blew 'em to pieces.

M1 Garand beats it just because of it being Semi-Auto in my opinion :), although I've always loved the Russian Semi-Auto http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/SoldierFront92/Weapons/SVT401.jpg :tops:
