Weapons,Mods and Ammo. Mega thread #2

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:08 am

The strength of Guns is also a weakness: there are many Guns and many ammo types for those guns. Still, it's the sort of problem I think some players like to have. I was able to finish my hardcoe playthrough with a Guns-focused character but without a companion I would have had some difficulty juggling my small arsenal.

Well I guess that that's kind of good since it forces you to choose which weapons you want to carry. I kind of enjoyed carefully choosing my core arsenal for scouting out high tech areas. I remember my core set being Blackhawk, A3-21's Plasma Rifle, Metal Blaster, Lincoln's Repeater, and a se of Winterized T-51b. Managed to get my weight down to under 100. Energy Weapons are going to be fun in New Vegas.

I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Sawyer is holding out on us. With his revelation that all but one ammo caliber will have at least two different firearms chambered for it, it has become clear we know only a fraction of the firearms that will be included in the game. Josh seems to be a master of marketing.

Disclaimer: I intend to go on at some lenth here, so if you are put off by my normal pontificating I respectfully suggest you may wish to entertain yourselves http://www.fox.com/familyguy/. You can skip to the conclusion at the end of the post to get the gist if you want.

It seems the most constructive way to proceed with this would be to first determine what ammo calibers most likely will be included:

FO3 Calibers
.177 (BB)
5mm
5.56mm
.308
.32
10mm
.44 magnum
12ga

Known FO:NV calibers
.22LR
.357 magnum
9mm
.45-70 Gov
12.7mm
.50MG
20ga

With the claim that the ammount of weapons will double, it makes the most sense to include just about all of the FO3 weapons. That makes the available list of weapons, by caliber look like this (some are guesses, this is a speculation post):

.177 - BB Gun
.22LR - Silenced .22 Pistol, Silenced .22 SMG, Varmint Rifle
5mm - Mini Gun
5.56mm - Assautl Rifle, Chinese Assault Rifle, LGM, Assualt Carbine
.308 - Sniper Rifle, Hunting Rifle, Semi-Auto Rifle, Battle Rifle
.32 - .32 Pistol
.357 Mag - Cowboy Reperater, .357 Magnum Revolver
9mm - 9mm Pistol, 9mm SMG
10mm - 10mm Pistol, 10mm SMG, Chinese Pistol
.44 Mag - .44 Magnum Revolver, Trail Carbine
.45-70 -
12.7mm - 12.7mm Pistol
.50MG - Anti-materiel Rifle
20ga - Lever-action Shotgun, Caravan Shotgun
12ga - Combat shotgun, Sawn-off Shotgun, Single Shotgun

The calibers that seem to be lacking 2 weapons include:
.177 (BB)
5mm
.32
.45-70
12.7mm
.50MG

Since all but one of these will include 2 weapons, here goes the speculation:
.177 - BB pistol. Likelyhood small.
5mm - The PDW (square SMG) could be chambered for this. Or a pistol similar to the Five-seveN. Likelyhood moderate.
.32 - A small auto pistol could conceivably be chambered in this. Or a small survival rifle could work also. Likelyhood small.
.45-70 - There are a number of weapons that would work. Single shot rifles, another lever-action, large huge frame revolver. Likelyhood high.
12.7mm - It would be a stretch, but a huge frame revolver or massive SMG could chamber this round. Likelyhood moderate.
.50MG - The only other weapon I can think of that would make sense in the caliber would be a heavy machinegun. Likelyhood high.

In conclusion, considering Mr. Sawyer's knowledge of firearms and looking at what would fit in the weapon heirarchy, as well as balancing each weapon to the others I would say that it is highly likely that all but one of the following weapons will be included in the game:

BB Pistol
5mm Personal Defense Weapon
.32 Pocket Auto Pistol
.45-70 Single Shot Rifle
.45-70 Revolver
12.7mm SMG
.50 cal Heavy Machinegun.

The least likely of these weapons to be included, in my opinion, both from a game design standpoint and realistic standpoint would be the BB Pistol and the .32 Pocket Pistol. Did I miss anything?

After seeing King of the Board for Life Garden Gnome's pics, It seems that BBs and 5mm ammo are ceratinly in the game. What I have not seen anywhere is .32. I wonder if the miserable .32 caliber Pistol, bereaved of it's ammo sharing hunting rifle kin, has gone to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SH1j1luFOw? If you add that info to the above post, then it seems more likely the BB is the "guns" ammo that will only have one weapon.

I'm surprised no one is complaining about the Alien Power Cells. Everyone here seems to hate Aliens. Maybe it's just because no one really seems to care about Energy Weapons as much as I do.

Actually, everyone really has no problem with either aliens or energy weapons. Nate, I've sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but everyone else said it's you they don't like. Is there a "I'm trying to be funny" smiley?

Seriously, I'm surprised nobody has freaked out about the power cells. i don't give a red rats ass about aliens, but I'm stuck trying to figure out how they're going to explain the damn things. I hate to say Groom Lake, and they've said it's not in there, but what else makes sense?

And as far a things that go zapp!, I guess the basic problem there is no real info to talk about. I have a working theory, though. Everything we're NOT hearing about is in for some pretty HUGE changes. Power Armor, Energy Weapons, etc... If you can ask "hey, what about ______, I haven't heard anything about that?" then I bet it's either gone from the game or is vastly different from FO3.

I don't think people were so angry at the fact there were alien weapons
I think there was more hate lingering for the MZ add-on and alot of people could connect their
anger of that and alien weapons into one group

Also...I LOVE energy weapons

Thank you Mr. Lego Man. Some people just have problems with directing their anger. I personally thought Mothership Zeta was fun. Incredibly stupid and cheesy, but that's what 50s sci-fi was all about.

Nah, most of us hate the aliens, not the alien weapons. Although I disliked Mothership Zeta I can't lie and say that I didn't love the Drone Cannon.

As for me, I disliked Zeta for a number of reasons:
-Took you off of Earth and away from post-apocalyptia, which is the setting of Fallout.
-No real storyline; it was just running through a spaceship trying to find a way off and then fighting another spaceship.
-One of the holotapes insinuated that the aliens might've been the ones that caused the bombs to drop, instigating the nuclear holocaust.

Aliens in my opinion should be treated like pre-war America; heavily obscured in mystery. Alien bodies and ships? Sure. Alien weapons? Sure. Actually fighting aliens off of Earth? Not so much.

That said I wouldn't mind another Alien Blaster or alien weaponry, just as long as it's balanced. Like IGG said, the weapons were overpowered.

Played 3 for a while today and I started thinking about a 1x scope with a chevron or post reticle and that didn't blackout the rest of the screen when you look through it.

Mostly for the assault rifle I was using.

Just a thought.

Someone, I think it was Jason, said something once in an interview about "combat optics". You don't commonly use those words to desribe a scope. The most reasonable explaination is that "combat optics" are what most gamers think of when they hear that phrase: ACOGs, red dots and whatnot. Chance of likelyhood = greater than 50%.

I'd prefer combat optics to a scope anyhow, Most of the fights I engage in are at such close range that a scope really just goes to waste and other times gets in the way of me being able to hit the target.

I like having my peripheral vision so I can see whats going on around me, not just in front. :tops:

Well I have difficulty shooting 1" groups (@100yds) with the Red Dot, mostly because I'm a half blind old fart and I have to turn the gain up on the sight to see the dot against the backgroud properly. When the gain is up, the dot is larger and usually obscures the small targets I shoot at. But It's great to point and shoot at bigger or closer targets. Very fast, point dot at target, shoot. Dead Tango.

Exactly, I have specialized weapons for Sniping (Anti-Material or the Hunting Rifle with a Scope) and I'd only do that sort of thing if I was absolutely certain there wasn't any tangos around that'll light my ass up while I'm looking through a scope, concentrating on taking that shot. :tops:

I just watched the Sony Qore thing on youtube and there were a few things that really stuck out for me.

1. M1 Garand is the epitome of sixyness

2. Sniper scope glitch appears to have been remedied

3. ACOG looking thing on top of a M4 (combat optics)

4. Thinking that the semi-auto drum-fed shotgun might be the riot gun

That's what really stuck out from watching it once for me. I'm sure someone will go through it and pick it apart.

Yup. It's obvious that "combat optics" ala ACOG are in. The Assault Carbine looks like one of the mods is the ACOG and possibly the picatinny rail system. Maybe the rails come with the ACOG. But that also may mean other rail based mods, like grips and whatnot.

So if you saw the qore vid you saw what is to believed to be the camouflage rifle. It's Semi-Automatic and it looks more Modern than anything that we've seen so far(not a MW2 joke.....) What are your thoughts and what gun you think are it's inspiration...

I think it's a fully modded assault carbine. Mods: combat optics, rail system w/attachment/s and a spiffy new paint job.

I was a little surprised by how modern the Camouflaged Rifle looked to be honest it had picatinny rails and everything. It kind of looked like an http://tntquality.com/images/VFC-HK416.jpg except the polymer was woodland camo color, What I'm wondering is what its chambered in? (Most likely 5.56mm but its a mixed bag with Obsidian having some Gun Nuts mixed into the dev team) :tops:

EDIT: I'm not saying its a bad thing that there is a modern looking rifle, It was a pleasant kind of surprise. :)
