This thread is about what we need id to patch in for the PC users.

I'll go first -


People shouldn't have to make their own config file from scratch - the game should come with user friendly options in the menu for people to tweak their settings at will, where it then does the work of saving these tweaks to a config file for you. Some people are not computer professionals, you should allow for those people (bet those guys have just flipped the game down in absolute frustration, probably haven't even bothered trying to come to any forum for help).

We're not in the age of DOS any more - we expect USER FRIENDLY graphical options menus.

Patch that.

Anyone listening from id? ---> we need a graphics options menu included. Something we don't have to create ourselves. Something user friendly so anyone can get into the game and play quickly. Something with basic and advanced settings so we can EASILY tweak the graphics till they run with our various systems. Basically, something that saves to config file for us.

Okay guys feel free to add to this, so the guys from id can more easily understand what us PC users are needing them to do for us. Maybe if we write it all down for them in one spot we can help them fix this sooner.

I'll keep a handy list updated in the first post, to make it easier.

Features

  • easy graphics interface, visual and easy to tweak (sliders and check boxes etc) without resorting to editing config files (http://store.steampowered.com/news/6464 given for this)
  • interface letting us rebind commands to any key without resorting to editing config files

First and foremost thing to patch is game's stability - no crashing. Next thing to patch are graphical and gameplay bugs - texture artifacts, texture pop-in and constant freezing.

Just saw a post in the Steam forums - since twenty minutes ago they're working on a graphics options menu to let us tweak our own settings (that was fast haha).

Update from Bethesda
Almost all the issues with RAGE are hardware/driver related and not an issue with the game itself.

Please note the following from Bethesda:

ATI and NVIDIA are working on updated drivers that should be released today/tomorrow that will fix multiple issues.
Bethesda is working on an update to allow for users to customize their video options which will solve many of the issues users are having.

Agreed so getting back on topic of the bugs that we are facing I wills state mine.

The driver did get rid of a lot of the screen tearing for me as well as the strange artifacting that would pop up and random geometry.

What it did not fix and may have added I am not sure, is the flickering NPC's and baddies, flickering between animation sets making them appear like transparent ghosts or something, it is very prominent in the cursed Mutant Bash TV section, wingsticks and bullets at times go right through the target unfazed. Speak of the beloved Mutant Bash TV, the constant and continual crash every single time I try to complete or leave the mini game. Every time without fail it crashes.

Speaking of Crashing I also experience some crashing in between races aswell as a few times loading an interior space, such as the ghost hideout.

Minimally on my list is the every now and again slow texture load in, not making the game unplayable like the others but a little bit of a pet peeve.

Oh and finally I am running an ATI card, Radeon Sapphire 5770 to be exact.

Just read another thing we need id to patch in - the ability to EASILY rebind to any key.

Mouse in game menus should not be tied to mouse sensitivity setting for the game, because while I love high sensitivity when I play, when I go to a menu I can hardly control my mouse. I refuse to play Rage with a dozen tweaks required to get it work when its still not working 100% so I wait for them to stabilize it.

One thing I would note regarding artifacting issues is there seem to be two different types of problems.

I have experienced something like the second type of artifacting, thin striated lines, but nothing anywhere near as bad as that pic. In my case it only occured occasionally in the Ghost Hideout and the Wasteland Garage and it was so brief that i was not able to take a screenshot. I have since installed the Oct 4 AMD Rage performance driver and have not had a chance to verify whether this fixed the problem.

When launching the game is auto launches into a very low display setting. When I change the display setting (increase the resolution) it crashes. I believe the issue is related to XP with SP3.

Good to see they're adding new video settings. Why they ever thought that just letting the game decide what everyone's PC could handle was a good idea, I have no idea.

Here was my list...


  • Mouse sensitivity while aiming is different than that of the menu. Mouse sensitivity is much more sensitive in menu's and inventory than in game.
  • On a related note: My menu's dont support the cursor being at certain locations, it rather appears as if the mouse was jumping from location to location on a grid (skipping pixel space). This may be the cause of the sensitivity difference.
  • The texture rendering system needs changed for PC. The hardware of a PC is much greater than that of a console. Even running dual GPU's at 2gigz each I can notice these textures loading when I turn. Perhaps changing this optimization to render textures in a certain radius at close range, and conal at long range.

  • Nightmare is very easy. I believe the melee distance of enemies is too short. Enemies should do much more damage to construct-able items.   • I would like to be able to rotate my camera while driving, but we all know thats also because of the texture loading system...
  • bug fixing including games crashing at load screens.
  • More video settings is a must. The more the merrier. Texture Detail and FoV can specify how to utilize the texture rendering system. I dont know how Im getting such terrible performance with my cards
  • No more restricted 60 frames per second.
  • There is a huge bug while running fraps. Sometimes it works, most times it freezes the game. This could be a problem in the Fraps programming and maybe this is the only game that has discovered the issue, however I highly doubt it.
  • Autosave points are few and far between.
  • Remapping the quicksave and quickload keys is necessary (it is currently locked), there are many fraps keys defaulting to these.

I'll add my voice to the extreme desire for the high resolution textures.

I use settings in the rageConfig.cfg file to force the game to give the the highest quality textures possible at all times, but the "highest quality" available is laughable. FALLOUT 3 looked better in terms of sheer texture quality, and that game had horrible textures (sorry, Bethesda, but it's true). I realize that having unique textures for everything (or so you've claimed in the past) is extremely filesize intensive and labor intensive, so I'm sure that's why you had such low quality textures on most things, but come on! Give us an option to push our systems!

I don't care if the high-res texture pack is 150GB, I want this game's visual aspect to make me respect the developers. I already like the game, I just want to be able to like the art.....

I want to see :
- SLI support
- 7.1 / 5.1 support (voices from back speakers instead of center speaker)
- AF 16x support (when turned on i get black lines in the shape of squares on all objects, 8x AF works fine tough)

And off course they should include the configuration fixes in the new patch and add the cache folder.

ADD THIS:

- new dev-console CMD to output/save player coordinate location(flags/params for feet(bottom) or head(top) height) in current map (and output map name) , useful for reporting MOVEMENT STUCKS (i've played 30 mins and i was stuck twice!)
- again> robust audio options for hardware acceleration !!!
- new dev-console CVAR to choose the use RAM cachingfile instead of APPDATA (HDD) cachefile. (Rage uses only 500 MB of main RAM in first mission, so what's the big deal)

It's not, it's just set to 60. You can set custom with console. com_maxfps , how easier can it be, but i guess your talking about having that in the options screen.

Keybinding the NumPad area properly. Enter key does in fact bind, but it didn't when I had first tried it. The NumPad 5 key does nothing when bound.

Ultimately, fix all keybinding bugs.

as for setting - i use console, cfg files, exe additions start from steam nothing [censored] works it always looks the freaking same i thought it would be bad but not that bad
