See, in the other Elder Scrolls games, we have Septims, but seeing as this game predated the Septim Dynasty of Emperors, what do we call our gold coins?

Very good question, I tried looking up the currency in the ES Universe, but I'm stumped.
Perhaps just ordinary golden coins; maybe each faction has their own type of coin with an insignia on it? No idea.
lol. How about "Aldmeri Crowns", "Ebonheart Soveriegns", "Daggerfall Groats"
Fun incarnate:

Bottle caps please! (or perhaps given the era it should be corks)
Probably go with the classic gold coin route.
I fear at the start 'o the game we will not have much "currency" at all hehe!
Likely it is simply named gold, took me a long time and some sleepless nights to actually figure that one out but there you have it!
Perhaps they use a similar system as they did in Age of Conan? Gold, silver and copper i for one would very much like something like that!
i think the tri system of currency is best in an mmo
i dont care what you call it ... i just want very Large Bag Full's, and Stacks, and Piles, and Chest's Full of it.
I hope its just gold, I'm tired of this copper and silver crap every mmo adopted since world of warcraft, it doesnt make sense to have your silver magically turn into gold when you get more then 99 of them, this is why I just want to stick to gold and only gold, unless they come up with a trade system where you can trade metal coins for other metal coins, and not at 99 either, its more realistic to have like gold worth 2.5x the weight of silver, not 1/100th...
just a note that wow did not invent that
it also makes as much sense as being able to carry around 10 million gold coins
Yeah, you can't expect realism in any type of game you play.
i have always said realism is good to a point. there are many parts where if you went with the "realistic" way it would make the game far less fun. all about that balance.
Morrowind is the only game I recall that had other types of currency aside from the mighty Septim. You had the Drake, which had equal value to a septim, and Dwemer coins, which were useless.
I kind of like the idea of the different factions having their own currencies, but I'm not going to be offended if they just call it Gold.
It's just that number that goes up and down over the course of my adventures and lets me buy gear and supplies.
Fluff text I imagine.
A gold coin is a gold coin, no matter what denomination it is.
I guess for the game universe they should get some name, but it should be universal to all factions so new people know what the hell npc's are talking about.
Still it should be the classical "gold, silver, copper" route
haha, that might be good for my maths... I'm sure its gotten worse.
Might as well call it paper, cause I'm gonna be stacking it.
the entire point of the 3 currency system is to make the numbers more manageable.
Sovereigns, Marks, Crowns, Coins, there's any number of names that can be used.
Most likely, simple "gold" is what we'll get stuck with, though.
im quite sure the thieve's Guild and the Dark Brotherhood will be laughing with disagreement on your comment. as they will be the ones with all that gold. that you say "we'll get stuck with."
