On horse back you can move more quickly away and now you can attack on them. Plus how would invisbility work on horseback? Or many of the higher level destruction spells?
they just block certain spells. You couldn't case destruction spells from horseback in OB, but you could cast restoration, or night eye, or magelight.

this seems like a simple concept.

People would still complain if they couldn't use magic branches like destruction.

Am I the only person whose crosshair disappears during mounted combat?

Stop writing on the forum and go play Skyrim  It's already out.

Oh thanks, I didn't notice.

Now that I have played horse combat, I must say, it does feel rushed.

I mean, using melee weapons feels clunky, although it is still better than getting off your horse in the middle of combat. But using ranged weapons is a pain in the ass, I can't hit anything unless it is right in front of me. Even worse, if the target is very far away, its hard to tell if my arrow is hitting him at all.

Is my memory corrupt, or did I ride horses in Oblivion in 1st person? Just ran memcheck... No issues.

I dont understand why people are unhappy, you complained/ asked and Bethesda has delivered. Personally I wish they spent more time on a magic overhaul rather than mounted combat.

EDIT: spelling

Yes you did. And you were able to look around with the mouse while controlling the horse with movement keys. Or sticks with controllers, i assume? How it's no longer possible i do not understand

Because it WAS rushed.
They gave the devs one week to create something. Apparently one dev made mounted combat in that week.

I guess I'll start using /sarcasm/ tags...

I personally wish that Beth. would keep patches and content separate. I like the bug fixes, I could've lived without horses in general, and mounted combat in 3rd person... Well, that's just not me. But even with bug fixes, I'd like to at least have a wee question that asks me if I am ready for a bug fix, or if I'd rather do it later... Even Adobe gives me the option. And it seems to me (looking at the amount of peeple whinging) that it would be in Beth.'s interest to have peeple knowingly downloading something, at least then if something breaks the peeple that downloaded it know that the hole in their foot was there by invitation.

And, for some of us, there is also the issue of bandwidth. Some of us have to pay for our downloads, or get capped to less than snail-like speeds, so it just might not be convenient to get capped on the 12th day of one's 30 day measurement period.

People complaining have a point. Sometimes it's better not to give anything at all rather than a lackluster "freebie".

Let's say someone is distributing free soft-drinks for promotional purposes. Who wouldn't complain if these drinks tasted bad?
I bet no one would come out and say "hey, but it's free!".

Not to mention that the presence of a working, full "fan made patch" raises some valid question about Bethesda commitment/expertise/willingness to address gameplay related issues. While patches are free, the game isn't and people have all the rights to expect a fully functional product.

Rushed? Nah. Embryonic? Yes.

They've implemented it as far as they could (with regards to melee and archery anyhow, I have no idea why magic was neglected), now we need to carry on making noise to make sure they build on it. I for one want to fight NPCs on horseback, I want to charge groups, scattering them as my horse pounds into them, all the while attempting to skewer one on my lance.

THAT should be the future. Chucking fireballs from horseback goes without saying.

Any average horse would die after one explotion of a fireball a tad to close for comfort. And then their's dual casting, spells that need charging, the question of how on self buff spells would work, spells you hold down to cast, master spells, and my personal fav problem - any future magic improvements Beth is currently planning. If Beth is planning to upgrade magic, like everyone is hoping, in the next dlc called Hearth FIre then of course its going to take more time and more importantly not going to be released now, months before they're even sure of what they're doing and how they're going to do it. I want to see spell combinations like we saw in the game jam video. I really hope that's the next dlc. And so, I'm willing to wait and see what Beth has planned.

In other words, unbunch the panties ladies and calm down.

And to further the discussion on my dislike of horses, why can't I 'dismiss' a horse? Or tell a horse to 'wait'? Why doesn't a horse have a home stable, like any other follower? Dogs can be dismissed... Dogs can wait... Why not a horse? 'Horse, go home. I really REALLY don't want you following me everywhere, take the hint before I put this sword through your stupid head'.

If you look at what players have done to fix Skyrim below here and then look at what bug fixes Bethesda has done. I mean, they made this game, they should fix these things much better then players. Don't Bethesda play Skyrim themself?

So below you can kinda see all the bugs that has NOT been fixed by Bethesda for X360\PS3.
Snip
and to think another 800 more bugs to go.

Anyway on subject yeah I've noticed Mounted Combat is horrible too. I don't exactly need first person but a little dot to tell me where I'm aiming my bow would make archery on horse back a viable option or at least more viable than just walking or running by myself. It doesn't feel like a complete feature if you can't use magic.

As I was wondering Skyrim the other day I thought about this same thing when Shadowmare kept popping up everytime I fasttraveled. A quick fix would be to let you have stable somewhere to store your horses. Maybe even let you earn some money by renting them out where you can come back every 3 days in game to collect some more money.

Not to nitpick, but if you can use both hands to shoot a bow from horseback, you could use both to cast a spell. Draw back a bowstring / charge a spell.

What are peoples thought on horseback archery with no hud, it took me a while to learn where the sweet spot was in regular combat but I can imagine me missing all the time on horseback with no crosshairs.

After rereading my post, I see I wasn't really putting much thought into that first part. Was mostly focusing on the latter part, about how they're hopefully going to be upgrading magic so they don't know what the magic system will look like afterwards, so they're saving the horse combat for after that.

Assuming you use archery to take a wide circle around whatever your shooting at you'd be moving your horse into things you cannot see as you'd be looking at your target.

Yep, exactly. I can see it now. You piss off a Giant and he starts to chase you. You then circle around the Giant and turn in your saddle, readying your bow. You stick your cross hair on him and...BAM! Your horse slams into a tree at full gallop, breaks it's neck, and falls over on top of you. As you lay there, pinned beneath the horse, the Giant walks over to you, grins wickedly, then proceeds to smash your skull with his club, it splatters like a watermelon ala Galagher style. And all of this happened simply because you couldn't see where you were going while in first person.

Yeah, I hope thats it, I'm normally a warrior, but gave magic a spin. Support wise (alteration and conjuration), and screwing with enemies wise (Illusion, bahahahaha) its fine. But I do agree Destro does need looking at. Somethings not right when at one level, you can blow chunks out of Frost Trolls, but then a few levels later they are shrugging off the same spell as if its nothing. :(

I know you were just using an example but... given that frost trolls don't level, that doesn't actually happen. It does happen with things like bandits though, through the "ranks" of bandits. Only Alduin, Soldiers and Guards actively level, and soldiers are bugged to remain stuck between 10 and 15.

Destruction does need fixing, being a mage quickly becomes sit on a rock waiting for magic to recharge then scorch off another tiny bit of health, using all your magicka to do it.

Are there any FTs that are lower levelled then? Because I distinctly remember taking one down very quickly, quickly enough to pleasantly surprise me. Like, 4 firebolts, hand on heart. 0.o

The next time, of course, I may as well have been throwing feathers at them.
