Why do you hate the Nords in Skyrim?...

Post » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:20 am

My first character in Skyrim was a Nord but then again, ever since Morrowind the first character I played was a Nord so it had little too do with the game being set in their home province. A good second is always a Dunmer though, perhaps Argonian.

I've never played a Nord in any TES game. I might play one in Skyrim eventually, but by the time I decide to do this there'll probably be new games to play and so little time...
However, I don't hate Nords. My in-game wife is a Nord ;) I just don't see a reason to choose this race above any other - it's a fantasy game, I prefer non-human races, actually.

Nords are stupid and I hate them. The only one I even remotely liked was Nels the Naughty. In Oblivion, quite a few Nords were the jolly ol' drunkards, but in Skyrim they really turn me off because they are all "GRRR IM A MARCUS FENIX IMITATOR IMMA CRUSH YOUR HEAD LIKE A WALNUT GRRR HONOR,MEAD GRRR IM TOUGH MAGIC SUX ITS THE DEVIL GRAAAAAAAH"

They can all die in a whole for all I care.

Hey, at least your average Nord knows how to spell the word hole correctly...;)

Didn't play Morrowind, I was reading the Thor comic when I got Oblivion and so my first character in Oblivion was a hammer-swinging Nord named Thor (Yes, I know, I don't have an original thought in my head) then I decided I wanted to play more with the magic at low level, so I made a High Elf mage character in Oblivion, then Skyrim came out and I got hit with the Nordophilia bug again, and my character in Skyrim is a Nord warrior.

I think I might do a Bosmer thief next, though.

My Nord's a frickin' genius, Mr. Bigglesworth! Traveled Tamriel, saw the world, then got caught returning to Skyrim and mistaken for a Stormcloak. You know the rest of the story...

You obviously haven't seen the man-mountain of mighty muscle that is my Nord warrior. No scrawny Breton half-elf sired him, amigo.

Of my 5 characters I've started or planned 2 are Nords. It isn't hatred for Nords that makes peopel want to play other races. That said there is a rather boorish stereotype that a lot of Nords seem to be trying to live up to.
I still remember the Redoran guards in MW saying to my Nord, "I suppose you're looking for a tavern. I'm sure I can't help you".

Conan? Why not Thor from the old Norse myths?

Because he wear women clothing.

Read up about when the giants took his hammer.

Why do most people on here play as other races in Skyrim other than Nords???, What's with the constant "Nord" hate in Skyrim???

I don`t hate the Nords. Never did I just play the Race I feel like.

I don`t understand why some have to jump on the word `Hate` for everything.

Just because I like vanilla it don`t mean i hate chocolate!

No they're not the same.]

Conan=barbarian

Thor=Odin's son and protector of mankind that defeated Rognorak, a giant demonic snake, and then became a Norse-hero-god.
The serpent was actually named J?rmungandr/J?rmungandr or alternatively Midgaresormr which means Midgard Serpent. Ragnar?k/Ragnar?k is the end of the world involving the defeat of the gods amongst other things.

I personally wasn't looking forward to the setting of this game because it was the Nords but I was happily proved wrong. I think I had been too influenced by the naked Nords myself from Morrowind. If anything, I rather developed a lot of respect for the Nords (though I have yet to play one; too much fun trying races I've never played before).

I've played 1 character in Skyrim: Nord, whom I named: 'Nordic Bastard'.

I have much hatred toward all other races, especially the inferior Khajiit.
Nords rule Skyrim and all others shall bow before Nordic Bastard.

Almost everyone will play a Nord at some point , for immersion reasons since it's their homeland .
The same cannot be said of other races . I think Nords are among the most played races

So did Thor achieve divinity by defeating Jormungandr or was he still mortal?

From what I was taught in school is that Thor defeated the serpant and he then ascended to Valhalla but not Asgard.

Most people chose Nord over the other races to play as actually. Nord is a favorite race to play as in Skyrim

I don't think that guys like Thor need to achieve divinity. ?sir and Vanir were Gods from the start as far as I know. Valhalla is where you go when you die to prepare and train for Ragnar?k, but I've never heard of anyone ascend to godhood by going there. But then I haven't dived down into the details of Norse mythology, just the general/basic stuff. But your question does make me wonder. And I mostly chimed in to correct the little mix-up of names.

So that means that approximately 72.29% of the population chose not to play as a Nord. Myself included. I personally have hated them since Morrowind. As many naked Nords as I kept running into in that game made me seriously doubt their intelligence. I mean really, how hard is it to keep your pants on?

Hah!
Ah, the memories.

Thor was already immortal as son of two gods. I don't know enough about Norse mythology to be certain that they had any myths about men becoming gods (unlike the Greek/Roman Heracles/Hercules).

Thor was indeed a god from the start. Even Hercules was, as a demigod, more than merely a mortal, although I can't remember exactly how his story ends.

But an earlier poster had it right - Ragnarok and the Midgard serpent are two separate things. The Midgard serpent was a snake than encircled the world, and if I remember correctly, come Ragnarok (the end of this current world) the giants and other enemies of the gods kill the Aesir and destroy the world, and specifically Thor slays the MIdgard serpent but then dies of its venom. Odin is eaten by Fenrir, the wolf-offspring of Loki.

Anyway, I would think anybody that actually can't stand Nords would have to just avoid this game altogether because the whole thing is steeped in Nord/Norse cultural influences.
