1994 vs. 2011

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:37 am

Arena was buggy for me, and would crash a lot. It made me weary of Bethesda. I still bought Daggerfall. I still remember trying to figure out how to get out of those stupid random dungeons, and I was so happy when I could the teleport spell so that I teleport to the entrance of the dungeon.

Getting involved in these arguments is annoying, but I choose a game for story. The reason I play is to be entertained, however, if the game has graphics that distract me from game play or just plain bad game play then I can't get into it as much.

Mass Effect had some pretty noticeable rendering bugs and late pop in texturing but the story was so damn epic I did not care. The combat in ME was also ass but it was tolerable due to the completely awesome rest of the game. Skyrim is on the same level as Mass Effect in the epic story line department but I still prefer sword and sandal to spacefare any day.

Go away then, we're having a discussion.

You pretty much posted in a thread to say you're not going to post in the thread. Dumb poster is dumb.

And the sheer logical option was to reply back to me, to tell me what I already knew, AS IF you were offended. And now you can either ssshhhh, or... Defend yourself. :)

My opinion was just as fair as the rest of the opinions shared in this thread. Who are you to say it's not equivilent, HMMmm??

Other then what Talos mentioned, in relation to the subject at hand, I had nothing to add other then what was priorly stated.

PS: Alduiin, I fill forever haunt your posts....MUUUAAHAHHAHAHAHHA.. No really, I won't. I'm a normal dude.

If Skyrim came out on 11/11/11 with 1994 graphics, you would NOT get it.

EDIT: To Talos, that's so stupid(don't report me, I'm not insulting YOU), the notion that graphics aren't important is stupid... if Skyrim didn't have the graphics it does, it would be QUARTER the game it is now.

Yes, I find story and gameplay more valuable - Morrowind is a prime example(actually, the gameplay was pretty awful...) but anyway, although they are important, the graphics are NEEDED for a modern day game.

The story in Skyrim isn't even that good, anyway.

Not really. Many 90's classics (Half Life, Deus Ex for example) still sell a lot today. Granted, many gamers would be too shallow to play a game with older graphics, but that doesn't mean noone would buy and enjoy them. I still enjoy Daggerfall from time to time, and at least on my emulator, it doesn't look much better than Arena. I mean, some modern games don't even have good graphics but become massive successes. Terrarria's graphics could have been much better had it been developed by a major studio instead of an indie company. It's still selling tons of copies though, because people value gameplay more than old/ugly graphics.

I would prefer to play Skyrim with Daggerfall graphics. But then again, if it were on par with Daggerfall's graphics, I'd play Daggerfall because it's the better game. Hmm... That must be why I'm playing Daggerfall right now.

People always seem to make it a choice of graphics or gameplay.

I've always wanted both;)

Gameplay > Story > Sound > Visuals, in my book.

It's still nice to see how far we've come technologically, although a more accurate title would've been 1994 vs. 2006, since that screenshot is 2006 hardware and not 2011.

Your obviously a modern gamer (no offense)
graphics don't make the game at all, story and gameplay is what's important.

And I'm sure you'd date an ugly girl with a nice personality too.

I actually wish they would release Skyirm with 1994 graphics GOOD GOD do you know how much content and complexity they would be able to add to the game?! /drool

It would be interesting to see a studio take up this challenge.

All I see is the comparison between graphics, and not the actual content, gameplay, game mechanics, etc, etc.

Fail thread.

Graphics dont make an RPG but in Skryim they sure compliment the game alot. I spend alot of time just looking at things, scenery, the sky, groves in the middle of caverns etc. From a roleplaying perspective being surrounded by such a detailed enviroment sure helps feel connected to the enviroment.

Like the other guy said. Combat will still svck

If they would use a system similar to Dead Island, it would be great.

The melee combat has a great feel to it. It feels...real.

Thou dost surely jest!

Seriously. Arena had 4 different sidequests.
Every single dungeon was generic. (And the entire main-quest was composed of them - around 9 dungeons)
And the game also had a jerky feel to it, that was not present in a very similar game that came out 2 years before it- Ultima Underworld
