1994 vs. 2011

I actually tried Arena after playing Skyrim... and Arena was better.

I hope your joking. I'm an old gamer who loves Daggerfall and on. But Arena was horrible....

After playing FO3 and reading all of the comments from the "old school" fans who hated the changes, I noticed a lot of similarity between those posts and the ones still being made by the Morrowind fans. The old FO games were available as a re-released collection, so I bought them. In spite of the horrendously dated graphics, the clunky interface that was harder to deal with than the enemies, and the entirely text-based dialog (Morrowind at least had voiced greetings, taunts, and a few other occasional lines), I still liked the original Fallout a lot more than FO3. It's not just nostalgia when you can take a 15 year old game that you've never played before and find it more enjoyable than the new sequels with all of the technology, graphics, and high-paid design team.

Basically, the old games look awful by modern standards, but the new games are mostly miserable in terms of the actual GAME. Why can't somebody in at least one of the big development companies get the picture and produce a GOOD RPG with at least semi-modern graphics, instead of an all-in-one FPS/RPG/Sims/Flightsimulator/Sports game that's supposed to somehow appeal to everyone and their pet?

If they released skyrim with 1994 graphics I guarantee you wouldn't buy it.

There is a mod for that:

Oh come on, throwing in DA2 isn't fair.

If graphics truly didn't matter, then why are you playing games on a modern gaming system in the first place?

Everybody always likes to say the best games were the ones they've played in the past, so why aren't you still playing those instead of playing games on a modern system with modern graphics?

I still play Doom on my laptop once in a while, but I'm not going to be so disingenuous as to say that I'd play it today if I hadn't played it in the past. I don't tend to see things only through the rosy, misty view of nostalgia lens.

And I bet there are plenty of you making the "graphics don't matter" kinds of statements who have played Morrowind or Oblivion on PC with mods that upgraded and updated the graphics.

Give me a break.

Graphics do not make the game.

There are certain textures in this game that are TERRIBLE by 2011 standards. Even oblivion had better textures for miscellaneous objects like windows, barrels, chests, etc. Go to the blue palace. Check out its windows. Compare to the windows in Oblivion.

'Face-melting graphics' my behind.

If graphics were really that importantm, you would not have the rerelease of classic games with old graphics, you would not have simple graphic games on portable devices making companies millions of dollars, you would not have the huge free to play market in Asian countries (and Western now, to some extent) making millions of dollars, you would not have games like Tetris continuing to be popular decades after initial release, etc.

Obviously, graphics are not a big deal, especially for longevity of a product.

And yet Arena is still the better game.

The original Fallout is a much better game than FO3, no question about it.
Same for Baldur's Gate 2 being far better than Dragon Age 2. did not play FO or BG2 when they released, just played them both for the first time in like 2008. BG2 is epic. The only complaints I had about FO and BG2 were really, they games were way too difficult UNLESS you followed a certain path.
