1994 vs. 2011

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 12:21 pm

I think, personally, that graphics, sound, and art work make up most of Skyrim. Then Gameplay and Story.

Reason being, Skyrim is so successful due to it not only being under TES title, but having a brand new engine, sure, graphics arent EVERYTHING, but without this new engine, if this game were to even look like Oblivion, I assure you, it wouldnt have sold as much as it did.

I literally have seen TONS of comments on Facebook pages, Youtube videos, Twitter, etc... where the poster states something along the lines of: "I have never played an Elder Scrolls game before, but these graphics are AMAZING! I HAVE to get this game!"

That right there shows you, that maybe the graphics wouldnt scare off hardcoe TES players, but it wouldnt bring much newer players to the table, as Skyrim did.

Is it bad to like the graphics in a game and buy it for the graphics? Well, if ONE of the reasons is for the graphics, of course not, like one of the posters said before, I bought Crysis 2 because of graphics and it svcked.

The arguments being made are still that people would prefer to play games with terrible graphics but good gameplay rather than the other way around, and bringing up Minecraft as an example. But Minecraft's graphics aren't bad at all, quite the opposite, making their arguments rather moot.

Concede the point that minecrafts graphics aren't as good as most modern games, and I'll leave the thread.

Do otherwise, and you are lying.

Minecraft is a perfectly suitable comparison.

Of course I concede, because that wasn't the point to begin with. Please learn to read.

I think the thing with Minecraft, is that its always looked that way, and people are used to it.

I couldnt imagine playing Skyrim and having to go back to 1994 graphics afterwards, or Oblivion for that matter. Another thing, is that Elder Scrolls seems to always change in graphics, as in, gets better, and I dont think any of TES games have ever looked the same in terms of graphics, their always changing, so people are not gonna be used to Arena's graphics, because TES wasnt as popular back then, and to go from Oblivion to Arena would be really...awkward 0.o

We are in 2011 and we can and are more than capable of having both graphics and gameplay working well together. The graphics vs. gameplay is redundant.

TES games are amazing, just their release dates should technically be several weeks after initial release since that is when it is released to the public for testing purposes.

To be fair, the OP never made clear what his point was. He just posted a picture. Title doesn't explain the point of this topic much either, discussing graphics seemed like an obvious choice.

You know what has not changed though? The combat.

Actually, I thought combat in Arena and Daggerfall was even a little bit better....

Same.

But Skyrim isn't a good example of what 2011 games can look like, graphically. It's mediocre for today's standards.

Curse you! Now I need to go out and find those games to play, you have no idea how hard those are to find.

King's Quest and Space Quest actually did have quiet good graphics for their time, but it was the high end art direction that made those games graphically. Also the gameplay was pretty much [censored] in them. Those sold on story alone. And before King's Quest 8 killed the series they were the biggest selling games of their time.

I think the graphics for Skyrim have surpassed quite a few games, including the big ones like Uncharted and such, its the overall animation that seems mediocre to game nowadays, but the graphics? flawless.

I play on PC. The textures and shadows not great. I'm talking about the fidelity of the graphics, and we're talking about 1990s graphics versus 2011 graphics; we're not going to use console titles.

The way they implemented the art and atmosphere is fantastic, though. That is what makes Skyrim look good.

You are sooo lying just to prove your point. There is no way in hell you would pay $60 for a game that looks like the 1994 version. Better yet why dont I offer you a text based version from the late 80's perhaps? Because back then you were paying the equivalent of the normal $60 per game

If they made a game with 1994 graphics today, I doubt they would sell it for 60$ since with Skyrim, how I see it is that we also pay for the technology. Less effort to make a game, less people to hire. You don't have to sell it the same price to make good profit. I also don't appreciate being called a liar and find it quite rude, actually.

If they released skyrim with 1994 graphics I guarantee you wouldn't buy it.
you haven't seen my steam library.

chiatroll. it's a publicly viewable steam profile.

yes I would buy it if i had old graphics if I thought there was something solid respectable and worth seeing in the gameplay. I'm a strong supporter on indie games and sometimes they can't afford to make it shiny.

.

.

also daggerfall has boobies.

If you say(not saying you did since I dont remmeber what you wrote)that you would buy Skyrim if it had those graphics, well, Skyrim didnt come out until 2011, and in 2011, when new games come out(in America)their all 60 bucks, whether they svck, or don't svck, their 60 bucks, thats what they sell em for, now.
