Graphics do not make the game.

I beg to differ!

Graphics are one of the big things that make the game sell. I don't care about graphics if the game is good but to those who've never heard of Elder Scrolls, the graphic appeal is there, subconscious or not. After playing the game, you can appreciate the game for what it is but before that, you look at graphics because you've never seen the game and only seen the trailer.

That's why the Skyrim trailer shows the beautiful landscape, which showcases both detail of graphics and the new graphics.

Of course, to people who've played Elder Scrolls games and knows the awesomeness of them, graphics really don't matter. Besides, if you're on PC, you could always just install a texture pack.

I think there is a minimum of how good the graphics need to be though. Sometimes the graphics need to be good enough to give the art style justice.

Consistency is also VERY important when it comes to graphics, nothing I hate more (graphics wise) than having a massively detailed door then a low-res wall surrounding it.

100% true.

Dumb thread is dumb.

Which is why the above message belongs here.

Basically the real meaning of this thread just so turned out to be, 30 years old, vs 13 years old. And I'd rather not argue with kids.

Graphics do not make the game.

They sure as hell help immersion though.

If they released skyrim with 1994 graphics I guarantee you wouldn't buy it.

I would buy it in a heart beat.

Your obviously a modern gamer (no offense)

Not necessarily, 'good graphics' is a term that will scale with time. People will look back at these graphics and laugh as they compare them to their modern game graphics.

Go away then, we're having a discussion.

You pretty much posted in a thread to say you're not going to post in the thread. Dumb poster is dumb.

They make games like The Elder Scrolls, which are played for gameplay rather than story.

My jaw is on the floor with this comment.

Sure, Oblivion was terrible in terms of story.

But every other game in the primary series? Excellent stories, all of them.

The story is the main reason I've stayed with the series. The gameplay being great is just a bonus.

I have yet to see any butt graphics in this game.

That opinion is invalid in arguments like these, because Elder Scrolls games don't have crappy stories and gameplay.

*Your opinion isn't valid! But mine is!*

Kind of off topic, but to everyone who's using Minecraft as an example of "This game has bad graphics...":

Minecraft is fully rendered in 3D and has pretty 'advanced' shadows in place. Not to mention weather and such. It's graphics are good.

If you really want to use a game with bad graphics but awesome gameplay that people still play as an example, use Dwarf Fortress.

That's people mistaking the pixelly art style for bad graphics.

Minecraft really isn't an appropriate comparison to use.

Terraria?

Still good graphics. Arguably better than TES1:Arena's, given the special effects and lighting.

Whether it's stylized or not, the graphics aren't as good as skyrims (or any number of games using more high tech engines).

How isn't it a proper comparison again?

You know what has not changed though? The combat.
Modders ignore this thankfully.
Deadly Reflex, Oblivion mod.
Also, i cringed at this thought... it's true that Elder Scrolls is very rpg-focused though.

The comparison isn't with Skyrim but with "games that have bad graphics but are still being played".

People saying graphics don't make a game are ignorant. Of course graphics play a role in making a game good. You got the story, the gameplay, and the graphics. Sure the story and gameplay count more but don't just count out the graphics. There what gives a game a certain 'feel'

See the part where I mention any game that uses a more advanced engine. Skyrim wasn't the only game I mentioned.

the biggest problem with Arena isn't the graphics, it's the fact it runs at like 2 fps...

Let's all brag about how much we prefer good gameplay over graphics and how much more learned/intelligent we are than the stupid proletariat that play modern games.

Nothing like self-justification...
!, both are needed for a good game, i agree with this guy

Personally, I've always enjoyed the combat in TES. Maybe I'm just a weirdo though?

TES is the only rpg series besides fallout that I like the combat in the game and zelda and KOTR too, but I hate all turned based rpgs except this one gladitor game I got on xbox way back. Otherwise its the only rpg I play and enjoy but witcher 2 was good, but the one dark souls imo is mediocre I felt completly uninterested the whole time I played it.

The arguments being made are still that people would prefer to play games with terrible graphics but good gameplay rather than the other way around, and bringing up Minecraft as an example. But Minecraft's graphics aren't bad at all, quite the opposite, making their arguments rather moot.
