Oh no, Achievements

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:06 pm

If this is like other games on Steam, then the achievements on the PC version will be invisible. That is, you don't get a notification pop-up at all - the only way to check if you've got an achievement is in the Steam client.

In other words, you should be able to ignore them completely if you wish to.

I still don't understand what the problem is, the message only lasts for a couple seconds and its gone. I've gotten all the achievements in Oblivion and 95% of them in Fallout 3 I don't see what the problem is with achievements. Once you got all of them it never appears again :cookie:

Umm, well i like achievements. So ner.

It just introduces another element to encourage exploring all aspects of the game and extend the duration. It gives you a reason to use that weapon you wouldn't normally use, kill those mobs you hate fighting, run to a location instead of auto-travelling, etc, etc.

That can't be a bad thing.

Sure, you might like to think that you would explore everything anyway, but not to the same extent as you would without achievements even if they seem stupid.

I don't have a problem with achievements in general, just the easy ones that simply require you to beat part of the game in order to get them. I prefer ones you have to work for, like in Arkham Asylum which had an achievement for a 40 hit combo. It's more fun to look at them and see which ones you would like to challenge yourself to get then look at them and spoil the game because they use some variation of the quest name you have to beat to get it and you now know what will happen later on in the game.

Did anyone ever consider there a good way to track game completetion? Back in the day when i needed to prove i beat so and so level at pokemon. I would have to take a picture of the screen then show it off. Achivements Streamline bragging rights especially for hard games :D.

You tell me, I keep a folder of photos with the most recent newspaper and a screenshot (well, TV or monitor photographed with digicam, of course) of my victories in gaming. Like the completely filled trophy case in FFXII.

I don't see why people hate them. They have no affect besides a 3 second pop-up.

I am one of the biggest pack rats in these games. I will collect every example of every weapon, armor, ammo, Garden Gnome, what have you. I will collect all the Bobbleheads and every pack of Pre-War money I can find.

What I will not collect or care about are Achievements.

I don't need some arbitrary condition to be met to measure my game success. I can see how well I am doing by paying attention to the game. However, some people like them for some reason. I will just turn mine off. Like I have all achievements in all games. Come to think of it, since I never connect my 360 to Live, no one else will ever know my achievements that I do stumble across in spite of myself. Same with Steam.

Achievements are both ways of telling you how awesome you are, and telling whoever cares to look how awesome you are. They offer a sense of achievement whenever you do something particularly notable - you don't notice that the guy you've just killed is your one-hundredth kill normally, but you can't help but go "Wow, I've killed 100 people!". If you're the bragging sort, you can say "Look, I killed ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE!" without having to worry about people refuting your claims. Of course, nobody likes a braggart.

The only problem with achievements, in my opinion, is that they're once-only things. You won't get achievements when you start a new game for doing things you did in your old game - and likewise, you can do things one way and then just reload your save to do them another. I, personally, feel they're too static. But, well, that can't be helped.

Either way, most of the people that dislike achievements have a rather skewed view of them. I'm guessing it's more because of how sometimes developers make achievements feel less like a way of telling you how awesome you are, and more like a way of informing you of useless statistics - "reloaded 100 times" isn't something you really care about, nor is "you've ran fifty metres in total" - but things like "blew 100 people into a bloody mess" or "stealthily sliced fifty people" usually are.

Iknowrite?

In all seriousness, you're saying that, for the OP, seeing that bubble pop up when you're in a cave/building/whatever, telling you that you unlocked an achievement, breaks the mood? I think that's called ''Attention deficit disorder'', or ADD, if you really lose your concentration on everything by on bubble. Let me guess, if your cat meows at you, you kick it away, because it distracts you? Or your parents? If you're that easily distracted by a tiny pop up which lasts for maybe 2-3 seconds, maybe video games aren't for you. (By the way, if you hate achievements how do you feel when your friends on XBL log on, all the time? Oh wait, you probably play offline. Nevermind. :cryvaultboy:

I get pretty deep into video games, and I've never had a problem with the achievements popping up, neither have tons of other people. Just IGNORE THEM like you will this post.

Have you played a lately released adventure-horror game called Amnesia: The Dark Descent on PC? If you have, imagine that game having achievements and then you know what I mean. Btw, I play all my games on PC. I don't own a console and I'm really happy like this :P

Achievements really do svck. It's like, "oh goodie, I beat the same quest everyone else has, I rock so hard!"

However, I think it'd be interesting to see points make a comeback. Let's say they reset every time you load your save, and you gain points from beating quests (getting more or less depending on various factors, like speed and how much HP you lose or whatever), enemies and so on. I wouldn't mind seeing if I could top someone's high score, just like I used to back in the old days. :)

+1

Yeah, I couldn't care less about achievements. I'm not an obsessive completionist, and I've never been a huge fan of having artificial goals set for me in a game. I don't care if they're there. I just don't pay any attention to them.

It would be cool to get some kind of ranking based on how you played the game, though. I like the idea of points as well. It would be fun to see how many you got on different play-throughs.

My feeling is, Achievements (also Trophies) are for the Console community to show off and compare each others lists of games and how far they went in each game .
It's the console version of a profile .
that's why all console games have them .

If mods disable achievements I haven't got a single achievement in Fo3...

I likely will not get any in new Vegas either. :shakehead:

I dont care much about them, so long as they are displayed in an obscure place and dont pop up in my face, center screen, they dont bother me.

You know, it depends on the game for me. FO3, I disabled G4WL and never cared about the achievements. Star Ocean 3 (was it 3? The PS2 one) had hundreds of them built in, and I actually tried to get some. Of course, that had a fight-game-action style combat system, so it made achievements like "500 hits without taking damage" alot more fluid. And then there's the Flash games on Kongregate - I use their list of achivements as a way to see which games might be worth playing (they get lots of games, but don't automatically give all of the achievements.)

On Steam..... Portal and Torchlight achievements gave me suggestions of other things to try in games that can get repetitive. Half Life 2? Could care less.

I liked the achievements in Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360, it made it possible for me to see how far my online friends were in the story, and what Karma they preferred.

There is such thing as turning off the notifications, then the "annoying" pop up's wont appear. Honestly i didnt relly worry about the achievements my first play through, and if you think about it a random 2 second pop up doesnt relly ruin the mood of the game all that much.

I could care less about all the trophies except for the platinums, and the ones that I actually had to do something incredibly difficult to get. But the ones you get for completing quests? Nah, thats just to make certain special people feel like they accomplished something.

I didn't find this too funny. I can see you totally like achievements, so maybe you do all this if the game DOESN'T have achievements.
