Oh no, Achievements

Hello!

I just registered my new account just to tell you my opinion of achievements in this game and in general. I have played much online FPS shooters and in those games they are fine for some. They may challenge you to complete hard missions or goal objectives to get a new weapon or something, but I think that bringing achievements into Fallout: New Vegas is a bit too much. Why? One thing why Fallout is so good game, is the atmosphere and mood. If you are in a dark cave with just a spare ammo and bad equipment, a pop-up achievement totally breaks the mood for me and that makes the game look really bad. These kind of achievements are generally for casual gamers, because if you are skilled and talented player, you don't need any kind of pop-up to tell you that fact. This is ridiculous in a RPG-game. The stupidest thing is that very often they are soooooo easy to goal. Like "run 100 feets" or "reload your weapon ten times". Don't you think that these kind of things are totally for children, who actually are not even allowed to buy the game because of their age. What a mess.

So my bottom line. Please Obsidian, create an option to turn achievements off. Just please, I beg you. There is already many other people thinking the same as me.

- Greetings from Finland and apologizes of my perhaps bad English.
[/qsomething as menial as achievements shouldnt bother you or change the game atmosphere for you

It's silly that having achievements bugs anyone. They are a progress indicator, and some are quite difficult. Plus, they give most people incentive to complete things they may not have done previously. I like trying to finish off some of them, because it shows to friends how much I put into a certain game.

Plus, you can always pick out who knows what or has done what in certain games. A friend of mine hasn't beat RDR or F3, but he says he got far enough into them and doesn't like it. You can see that he hasn't. Plus, people can't hide that they really haven't beat certain bosses or whatever now.

Plus, it gives you replayability. I missed one? Go back and get it. It hardly subtracts from the experience at all. A few of the replies here are so elitist against them, and it's really funny.

My god, turn it off.
Done...so erm, next major breakdown worthy issue?

Seriously, you can do it, turn the pop ups off on PS3, xbox and PC. Then problem solved. A lot of people like them, a lot of people like filling bars (something I'm actually doing a bit of personal research into!) so let them, it doesn't hurt you to change a preference does it?

If we have to have achievements, I think they should all be secret. That way they are earned in the natural progression of playing the game and you don't have people doing stuff they would of never done other wise just to get 10 worthless points. This would still be flawed though since as soon as one person unlocked a certain achievement they would just instantly post it on the Internet. I would trade all 35000 of my gamer score for one Zune rental.

Achievements are just that, achievements. They don't break the mood for me at all (because I have notification turned off, possibly you should try it ;) ). They are just a nice little feature of letting other players know what you have done, and it gives you something to work to.

Wow, This i do not understand, why Complain about something which clearly wont be removed, just turn off notifications and be done with it. I don`t believe trophys/Achievements in my opinion prove anything.
Maybe one for a large challenge like completing Ninja gaiden sigma 2 on xbox on the hardest difficulty (Said to be the hardest game ever)

Is it really that difficult to avert your eyes when that little thing pops up for the three seconds that it does?

I have absolutely no problem with the achievements, sometimes I'm amused by them, especially when I'm not thinking about them.

If you get annoyed at that, then...just turn it off if it's possible.

Achievements are a nice way of keeping track how far you've been in a game and what you have, well, achieved. If some people want to brag about it, sure, let them do that, but that doesn't make achievements stupid. Then keeping your savegames after you uninstalled is stupid, too.

Why would you do that.
Thats like 8 MB you've wasted!

Turning them off is as easy as it was for Fallout3 - simply ignore them.

Some folks love getting stats on the web for gameplay, and I think thats Great. Nothing like showing your buddies just how badly they svck after all! ;p For the rest of us that don't care? No harm, no foul, thank you - drive through.

If you don't have the mental power to ignore the little thing that pops up in the corner, go into Preferences and turn off all notifications and they won't pop up.

I look at this thread with disdain. :shakehead:

My thoughts exactly. I mean, what is the big deal? I don't see how this will detract from your enjoyment of the game. It is simply a way to let you know you did something, and if there is stuff left to do. I agree that freebie achievements are lame, but ones like the 7 day survivor in Dead Rising actually takes skill and patience (I have the 5 day one - my xbox crashed on me halfway through the sixth day). And the achievements for Fallout will show you that you missed a quest. It encourage you to try different play-styles with the skill-usage based achievements. Some people take them too far and care too much, but more power to them. People have fun with them. I guess an option to turn them off wouldn't be a big deal - but still, is it really needed? Will that little pop up (on the Steam PC version its really small in the corner) cause you so much pain?

Well some of you sound like you hate them, but really what is so bad. If you dont like the achivments then dont try for them. For me they give me motivation to REPLAY
the game. Think about it. If you had no achivements then would you really try to go out of your way and adventure into area's that took time for dev. to make. Most likely not. But when your rewarded for doing special things, then, YAAAAAY.

Some of you say, "Ahh but they don't do anything". What if you one a trophy for your room but your friend also one the trophy. You would still have bragging rights on those who couldn't get that trophy. Or would you prefer never to get a trohpy for going out of your way to do somthing (Baseball, Football, Karate, Soccer, Swiming, etc.) These all give Trophies and that is what people stride for.

And for those who still think there pointless then im sorry i couldn't change your mind. I have a ps3 and as i understand when i get PLATNIUM Trophy i get to have it in a game called Home. I can set it were ever i want (im pretty sure this is what i heard if not im stupid). Ethier way i do think "Achievments" are nice even more for a game like Fallout.

Ok obsidian can't decide to turn off achievements it would be up to steam and Sony and Microsoft because they make developers put trophies/achievements on the game if you don't like them bring it up with Sony and Microsoft and valve/steam anyways if you don't like achievements then get the PC version of the game not off of steam.

Not everyone who likes achievements is some sorta person who wants to collect them all. Sometimes they are neat little things devs put in (Irony achievement/trophy in Bioshock comes to mind) or little rewards for stuff like "hey look, you got a huge multi-kill :tops: ". They aren't even inherently bad (though the "completed a chapter[1 out of 100], yaayyyy" kinds are kinda annoyingly pointless), if you don't like them, A:Disable notifications or B: Ignore it. "Oh no, Achievements"? More like "Oh no, nitpicking". /mythoughts

i like achievements, i like to accomplish things. If the pop ups ruin the mood for you, i think you can disable the pop ups that let you know when you get them (i'm not sure though, i've never tried it, but i thought i saw something in the settings somehwere once).

I think Trophies/Achievements are great when done properly, as they are milestones to ensure you've experienced the game (GOOD games) to the full.

Well, maybe you people are right. And turning off notifications is said now about hundred times so please don't repeat it. BUT, if you have played CoD games, what do you think of those kind of achievements which say "get 100 kill with grenade launcher or bazooka". That is lunary, because someone actually tries to get them, ruins other players' game and after that thinks that "man I'm good" even though everyone called him noob while at it.

Some people like me have no real achievments in real life and this is all I got, so shut up! Think of the little people!

I love having trophies in games. They help add replay value for me to go back and do what I need to do for the extra plat in my collection. What I don't like are challenging trophies that take much effort for something...like KZ2's reward for being in the top 1% of players for the week.

If a game needs achievements to add replay value, then the game is doing it wrong.

As far as immersion breaking, when I'm playing a video game I'm playing a video game. It is hard for me to fool myself otherwise.

Bingo!! When you're in a house with cats, kids and a refrigerator that gurgles, it's a bit hard to ignore. :P

I can't play the game yet until the 22nd, but as with Fallout 3 I will turn these achievement notifications off. I feel that they have no place in a singleplayer RPG and they destroy my personal gameplay experience.

*attempting to escape from an enemy stronghold... no ammo, low on health and just my knife ... sneaking up to an enemy guarding the exit... must ... not ... be ... detected...*

PLING!: You succesfully sneaked 50 yards :ribbon: !! AWOOGA! :shocking:

*eh what?*

Look here! Fresh meat boys!! :gun: :dead:

So it's great that some people like achievements, but I like to make do without them; thanks ;)

I agree. If i'm ever getting "immersed" in a video game, i wan't someone to come to my house and immerse my head into ice-cold water.
