Oh no, Achievements

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 12:52 am

I first saw them in Starcraft 2 (which I played until they turned my favorite faction into a bunch of gimps for some inexplicable reason) and liked them. It's a small affirmation that you are doing well in the game.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset by them. They seem easy enough to ignore.

So my bottom line. Please Obsidian, create an option to turn achievements off. Just please, I beg you. There is already many other people thinking the same as me.

Turning off achievements would be god send. There is nothing worse than being emerged in a game with all disbelief suspended and suddenly a cartoon achievement balloon pops up

"You just acquired the Did Not Have This Achievement Yet achievement! Congratulations!"

:banghead: Could you imagine the old text based role playing games if they with achievements? You had to use a lot of imagination because there were no graphics/sound to drag you in it would have annoyed the piss out of me being pulled out the story after going left 4 times with "You've unlocked the Gone West 4 times achievement, type 'SEND TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS' to send to all your friends!".

By the poll I would say most kids grew up with it these days so they are blind to it.

The majority of Achievements are just a stamp on your accomplishments for simply playing as intended. I like the Achievements that hint at a different path and take you off the beaten track. For Fallout 3 they would be the many side quests you'd go looking for because you knew there was an Achievement for it. (Those folks who wouldn't normally take it upon themselves to... do delve deeper for a cheevo.) My first FO3 experience was on 360 and the Achievements led me to a few side quests, but I also stumbled across others while looking for them. Good thing, made me appreciate the game more, and probably led to my loving it.

I also like hidden Achievements, like the, was it "Irony"(?) Achievement on BioShock? I kicked Cohen's ass because he annoyed me, and took his picture because it seemed right at the time, and.. ironic. Meh. Without any prompting. Got that Achievement. It was both funny and cool, and also slightly disappointing that they'd thought about it and I was so predictable. Heh. lol

I... honestly don't understand this. Achievements add value to the game for those who like them, and are absolutely, completely irrelevant to those who don't. Just ignore them. You don't have to try to get them at all. They aren't hurting you in any conceivable way.

Just to put them in perspective to you from those who hates them: Seeing that bubble is like someone sneaking up behind you and poking you in the kidney. Hard.

PC. Enter the Dash (default "Home"), go to Settings > Notifications > Untick "Display the Notification" and "Play the Sound"

Can turn them off on 360 too.

Okay, I can sort of understand the "breaking immersion" aspect, but it seems more like somebody sneaking up and tickling you gently in the rough area of your kidney. Half the time I don't even notice that I've gotten one, and I'm not one to get too engrossed in a game. Anyway, it seems that PC and 360 users can turn them off, at least.

I feel that they have no place in a singleplayer RPG and they destroy my personal gameplay experience.
Like we're supposed to play 'em competitively somehow. When most immersed in a game, the last thing I want to think about is the outside world or keeping any sort of score with other people. Boasting rights? Meh... Nothing one can accomplish from within a video game, in my book, is worthy of notifying others about. The perceptible presence of "achievements" subterfuges the whole 'suspended disbelief' thing for me too. TES4's booklet speaks of "A game where you could be whoever you wanted and do whatever you wanted", where one can "live another life, in another world". Another world? That the only value of an achievement is as a feather in one's cap, a badge for others to see, makes it pretty hard to dissociate an in-game achievement message with the real world.

Does doing this disable only the achievement notifications or notifications in general? I don't have the game juuuuust yet, but if achievement notification isn't 100% avoidable for PC, I'll definitely be making an http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3813 for FNV. I'd be half tempted to remove all traces of them from my ESM even if they can be ignored.

I dunno how it can be construed as any more immersion breaking than having "QUEST COMPLETED: GOTTA SHOOT 'EM IN THE HEAD" appearing onscreen when you complete the quest. Or even the XP notifications for hacking, killing, lock picking etc.

I can imagine the annoying ones being the "Killed 500 People" or the "Hacked 50 Terminals", but for me at least that's just a brow raising "Huh. Fifty... already." moment. The bloops and notifications could drive me to navigate away to see what it was for, I guess. But uh, as has been said, you can turn the notifications off. :)

Neat. Not that I care but others here might find it useful.

Such notifications pertain to the game and not what others think of how you play it... Hopefully, one can selectively disable notifications? I won't want them all gone, just the achievement related ones...

It turns 'em all off. Heh ha. You'll have to get to work then I spose. :)

What you could do is chase down every Achievement, get them all, and then you won't get hassled by them in future and the only bubbles you'll see and blips you'll hear will be in the form of a friendly message from a mate... just as you're creeping in game, weapon ready, about to attack, fully immersed. *BLIP* Open it up and it'll read: "Waaaasssurp JustinOther! Playing Fallout?" lol  Immersion destroyed. :sadvaultboy:

That or the phone will ring. :D Ever get startled by something IRL when immersed and sneaking as you've described? Sometimes my cats jump on my lap at the worst times and I nearly jump out of my chair. I used to keep an IM open when playing, but the game would minimize/crash when the windows popped up. >_<

Achievement immunization: I'll just whip up an Achievement Remover before playing instead. Does it really 'BLIP' for all notifications? If so, I'm glad to hear about that "Play the Sound" checkbox.

If you don't care about achievements, then ignore them. It's not like they ruin the game when that tiny little window pops up going achievement unlocked!

Let the people who get ego boosts from them get ego boosts from them, until they realize everyone else has the same achievements :P

S'happened a few times. Playing Condemned for the first time, I lost my joypad in the dark when my cat jumped up. Lost it again with the ingame scare when you have to lean into the locker to get a closer picture. "Can you get closer? I can't make that out." *DUDE COMES ALIVE*

Yeah it blips for all, same sound as Achievement notifications, my brother constantly sends messages if he sees me on, and the messages are almost always pointless. Like, "Sup?"

Ha! :biglaugh: One has to wonder if cats wait until the perfect moment to jump on and scare their people, like revenge for letting loose the vaccuum monster or something.

BLIP: It's awesome they've included an easy way to get rid of it. If only there were a 'Track Achievements' checkbox to untick...

I enjoy the achievements. I havent really noticed anything about them getting in the way of my gaming. If anything they serve only enhance the gaming experience. It gives me alternative goals and a different way of thinking about playing games that I may not be used to.

I think a good example of this is an achievement for World at War in which you must kill 5 enemies with 4 shots without reloading during a certain part of the story. It is very easy to kill all 5 enemies, but when adding the challenge of using only 4 shots the encounter changes. You must line up your 1st shot to kill 2 enemies at once while following up by killing the other 3 with the 3 bullets you have left. It adds another layer of challenge. The truly good achievements enhance game play in this way.

I am by no means an achievement chaser. I will not go out of my way to complete an achievement that isnt fun, and I do not obsess about having a perfect score in any game. I only have one game with a 1000 gamer score and that is Fight Night 3, which was an easy game to complete and was also a few years ago. There hasnt been a game since that I have felt compelled to complete to 100% (except for FO3, which wont happen since I somehow glitched the Scientific Pursuits achievement due to over exploration...who would have thought that was possible).

Either way you feel about them there is a way to turn off the notification regardless of the system you are using.

i use achievements like a check list

that way i can say Ive done it. before.

after i get a lot of them then i do what ever tickles my fancy
but if something more interesting comes up while im chasing a specific achievement well i dont get the achievement then.

if i look at other ppls achievements its to see how much they play the game, the more they play it the more likely they are to have more achievements (weather they hunt them down or get them on accident is irrelevant to me)

The story achievements your friends have can be a good indication of how much you cant talk to a friend about a game without giving away spoilers.

Achievements really do svck. It's like, "oh goodie, I beat the same quest everyone else has, I rock so hard!"

However, I think it'd be interesting to see points make a comeback. Let's say they reset every time you load your save, and you gain points from beating quests (getting more or less depending on various factors, like speed and how much HP you lose or whatever), enemies and so on. I wouldn't mind seeing if I could top someone's high score, just like I used to back in the old days. :)

Might and Magic was fun, but giving you a score at the end made it a game "about" achieving goals as efficiently as possible. I would hate to see that sort of emphasis introduced in Fallout. It's sort of like being an open world game. Score-keeping isn't a feature you just tack on to a different sort of game.

As for single-player achievements (I find them much more annoying in multiplayer), I'm pretty neutral. However, making them amusing enough that they're worth the break in immersion is clearly a challenge most achievements fail.

I don't care for them really. Some are stupidly amusing (like Coolest Thing Ever in Brutal Legend) but most of the time they seem to just be used as fodder for E-peen battles. There are people out there that enjoy having a checklist of things they need to do to "complete" the game, and that's cool. I can see how it adds re-playability for them, and I will say some off the time I have chased a few, but most of the time I just ignore them.

As for breaking immersion I can understand and somewhat disagree. If you get down to it, the quest name that pops up when you pick one up breaks immersion. It's pretty small and it's fairly out of the way, that's nice.

It's something quite a lot of people like and I have a feeling they will be around for a long long time, just like DLC.

If you don't have the mental power to ignore the little thing that pops up in the corner, go into Preferences and turn off all notifications and they won't pop up.

That would be cool, but would turn off everything else. I wish they had made it an option in settings to deactivate achievements.

(the mod fix for this might be to load clear replacements for the notifications, and a silent sound.)

I personally don't care for achievements all too much. Personally though I would spice my achievement pop ups (In steam) by finding a way to have it that when i get an achievement it activates someone saying "Go Away!"
