advlt Gamers Are Weird

Really? I honestly did not know this. I'm sure many others didn't as well, as all I ever hear are discussions about how they cannot be compared to film - even though there was a time when film wasn't recognized as a form of art.

You should visit the gamesas home page more often. Fallout and Fallout 3 are going to be in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's "The Art of Video Games Exhibit" along with 78 other games.

I'd forgotten all about that. Hmm... A trip to DC might be planned in my future just so I can take a look for myself

D.C. is pretty nice. In some places, like the Mall. Although the last time I was there I spent 6 hours in a train station. Incidentally, last time I was in D.C. I was there for 6 hours.

I had forgotten about that as well though. I think I need to make a trip as well.

I think the issue is that most games "emotional" moments take place in cutscenes, which are film. That's not the game, it's simply something that happens in between sessions of play. It's a cheap way of evoking an emotional response.

I think a better example is unauthored deaths in games that focus on emergent gameplay and stories. Things like the Total War games for example. The stories I've errected around my various generals, the captains who have made miraculous victories and been adopted into the royal line. Or in STALKER with it's emergent AI system. Saving other STALKERs from monsters, healing one who was hurt up bad and then on the next time through the area finding out they were cut down in a gunfight later. These evoke "realer" responses from me than some character dying in a cutscene I can take no part in.

Yeah, I've been there on vacation before. I'm about 6-7 hours away in Ohio so it might be worth a couple days to go down there and see the exhibit.

Seriously, have you watched the Today show lately? They expect to pass that crap off as entertainment and then are surprised when people look elsewhere to be entertained? Hilarious. Then again, Kathy Lee was in her 30's when Pong came out, so...:P She probably thinks video games are still like Space Invaders. You have to take into account how out-of-touch with reality these "TV personalities" are.

I'm usually not emotional in games, because often its easy to tell which characters will die. Like in the Gears of War games. Anyone who's not Marcus, Dom, Cole, or Baird will die.

Sometimes, I'm sad to see something end. At the end of Halo: Reach, the "Thanks for playing and supporting us all these years" message from Bungie killed me.

Kathie Lee Gifford didn't wait to weigh in with her opinion, proudly proclaiming "No, that's weird. Xbox."

"When you're in your thirties, there should be something more on your mind or attention than video games."

Like watching mindless crap on TV. But then, he would want that, being on TV.

I think we ought to feel sorry for them, they don't know what they're missing.

I've been playing video games on and off since the early 8 bit days - but there again I am just a kid at heart!

My answer to any suggestion that playing video games at my age is a waste of time, would be: -

I don't just play video games, I watch films (including a lot of world cinema and 'arthouse' films), listen to classical music (not so much as I used to though), read books (including classics), another hobby is photography.

What I [i][don't/i] do is watch soap operas, endless hours of television, brainless blockbuster movies (well, some!), get my kicks second hand watching lots of sport, read tabloids ... you know, things a lot of what they'd call 'normal' advlts do.

At least you have to participate in gaming, and use your brain more than with any of the above activities.

The people that say that kind of stuff didn't have video games as a kid, so that's why they think advlts playing video games is weird, yet watching TV and movies is normal. In 50 years we'll have grandparents playing video games..

Imagine -

You put on your headset and get online to pay some co-op...

Grandpa: Hey kid wanna go raid that space station today? I need some xp.

You: Nah I gotta collect all these bounties and chase down these raiders, they tried to skimp out on my contraband shipment.

Grandpa: Cool, cool....wanna play some COD 42 later?

You:....sure.......

Grandpa: Ok, (Loggs off)

You: Freaking Grandpa, give me some space.

C'mon now, you know they're right. We should all grow up and leave video games behind for the oh so mature world of TV talk shows.
After all, it's a much more advlt pastime, a more productive and far superior use of our time.

They're just jealous, their ratings are down again, and they're looking for some hype by baiting gamers. They wish they had the kind of growing fan numbers and staying power that the gaming industry does!
...and that a whopping 29% of gamers are now over the age of 50

Proud to help bolster that number - WooHoo!

Gamers are way too generalized. According to 90% of non-gamers, Gamers spend 100% of their time in doors, and they're destined to stay single virgins forever.

What I don't get is that they said that the advlts should have more on their minds? What? It's a frickin' hobby! It's no different than coming home from a long day of work and relaxing by watching television, or even kicking back and drinking a beer. Playing a video game is no different than taking a walk. It's something that the person doing said action enjoys. Sue us.

I hate the world for making me ashamed of playing video games. Especially since people laugh in my face when I tell them that I only play at nighttime, when there's nothing else to do. Ugh.

We could, as GameSetWatch pointed out, respond to their criticisms with the fact that the average gamer is now 37, that women make up 42% of gamers, and that a whopping 29% of gamers are now over the age of 50 - which by the Today Show's standards would make them really weird. But I'm alright with this trio's unduly harsh judgment, because honestly, I can't think of anything weirder than listening to what a bunch morning talk show hosts blab about in-between commercials for reality shows and soap operas.

Its alright guys, they're just trolling.

What the hell kind of people are you hanging around? The MAJORITY of people I've met play video games. Even GIRLS who rarely played video games could still talk about them and even had their favorites (usually a Zelda game, or maybe Mario Kart).

What's with the "Xbox" comment? It sounds like she was trying to prove that she knows about video games by just spouting out the name of the first console that came to mind.

Don't be ridiculous that's such a stupid idePS3!

Hollywood people don't live in the real world. I bet none of the actors on that show have ever played a quality triple-A title.

Too bad the Bethesda Forum Moderators are not moderating the Today Show.

I'd guess they'd get a warning or ban for calling groups of people "weird" for no particular reason.

Why is it okay for people over 30 to play cards or golf, but weird to play video games. They might said people over 30 should have better things to do than play card games. Or even go to movies.

If they think playing video games is weird, then why isn't much more weird for people over 30 to watch and listen to other people talk about dribble on television during the day?

It could be argued that videos games, some video game in particular, can really exercise the brain much more than watching TV.

Not all actors are as lame as them. Hell Mattew Perry was one of the most outspoken supporters of FO3 and NV...but people did think he was weird for it. Either way I'm with him, video games are an awesome way to pass the time.
