advlt Gamers Are Weird

Post » Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:52 am

What the hell kind of people are you hanging around? The MAJORITY of people I've met play video games. Even GIRLS who rarely played video games could still talk about them and even had their favorites (usually a Zelda game, or maybe Mario Kart).

Where I'm from, I've met only a couple of people who play video games. None of them were female. Not to mention I was the one who had to bring the subject up because they were sure I wasn't interested in gaming.
In fact, most people have a real hard time trying to accept the fact that I play video games. Explaining that video games are in fact not for children is often a painful experience. Not having anyone to share my passion with in the outside world can be a little frustrating.

Not all actors are as lame as them. Hell Mattew Perry was one of the most outspoken supporters of FO3 and NV...but people did think he was weird for it. Either way I'm with him, video games are an awesome way to pass the time.

He was in New Vegas so it's not really surprising

I live in the single most redneck county of Washington state. I know plenty of gamers, boys and girls, but everyone else just thinks it's a sin or something to play video games. It's ridiculous. I know jocks that play video games, and nobody believes them.

Playing casually I don't see as a problem for any age, but for those who are older and thats their life, I see that as a little odd.

Only because he was so publicly supportive of FO3 before NV. The asked him because of his enthusiasm toward the series.

Not really, it can effect people, more than games do, and im not going to judge it beucase I dont look at that stuff. Games however I do look, and see little emotion or anything really. Please give examples of emotional parts of games, becuase there arent many I am aware of.

Halo Reach had one of the most touching endings to a game I've ever played. Sure, there are a lot of shovelware video games out there that aren't the least bit artistic, but the same really applies for every other kind of art medium. For every http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=RLw6hBFJ8bk&feature=mv_sr, you get about 10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF_7poMGpGc.

Wow, those people have no idea that video games are an art just like books and movies - not a children's toy.

Yeah, you think that by now, most people will have accepted that with games like GTA, Manhunt, and all the other M rated games, video games are not just for children

Well, I have been weird for years, long before pc games, xboxes, and playstations hit the scene.
As for Kathie Lee Gifford, what opinion she has holds about as much weight as one of the kids sewing her crappy clothes in Thai sweatshop.

Not with the media constantly writing stories about how those games are "corrupting our children."

And since a lot of people believe anything they see on TV or in the newspaper, sensationalist media is a significant factor in slowing down evolution of how the masses think.

I'm not in my 30's, but I don't see anything wrong with a gamer in their 30's+. I've seen alot of the older users here post things that are just as hilarious to read as us younger gamers posts. I think of gaming as a fun thing that if done right, can unify people of different ages, sixes, religions, races, sixualities, etc. Why? Because video games are about FUN. I'd rather see someone use video games to escape reality than drugs or alchohol.

Before I graduated in 2000 people were saying the same thing. Don't mind Kathy Lee, she lives her life according to her age group's standards, as well as society's a few decades ago. It's not cool for old prudes to play video games. Can't wait to hear about how much fun she had sewing, crocheting, and mindlessly rocking in a chair. She can then be on porch watch and let the neighbourhood know the children are being troublemakers again.

It's mainly ignorance. They don't know any better because it's not something they've ever taken seriously.

i've never taken pushing a hoop down the street with a stick seriously either so i guess i shouldn't judge them

I think the issue is that most games "emotional" moments take place in cutscenes, which are film. That's not the game, it's simply something that happens in between sessions of play. It's a cheap way of evoking an emotional response.

I think a better example is unauthored deaths in games that focus on emergent gameplay and stories. Things like the Total War games for example. The stories I've errected around my various generals, the captains who have made miraculous victories and been adopted into the royal line. Or in STALKER with it's emergent AI system. Saving other STALKERs from monsters, healing one who was hurt up bad and then on the next time through the area finding out they were cut down in a gunfight later. These evoke "realer" responses from me than some character dying in a cutscene I can take no part in.

True, most use cutscenes. Allthough I felt kinda bad in Metro 2033 "black station" you have to sneak past some nazis or kill them if you get caught. But when sneaking past you hear them talking about thier families and how thier kids miss thier father. You later hear some saying they support the nazis becuase they see the other metros are worse, and so thier way must be forced on them otherwise humanity is screwed.

I found that interesting, not many games make your enemies human enough.

Who cares what those idiots think. A study said that the majority of gamers are older advlts. Fact is, all of the first and second generation 80s and early 90s guys arnt going to stop playing games. Its with most of them/us for life. No wonder Frank cheated on Kathy, he liked playing Madden. He should have done us all a favor and grabbed a shovel, plastic bag and a bin of acid when he had a chance.

The people on that show are no different to someone who thinks others are weird because they don't share their own obsession with "insert activity/social norm here".

A good example is football, football is insanely popular and although i like it and will watch any of the big matches i don't like it enough to support a club, the amount of times i've been asked "who do you support?" and then had sneering disbelief thrown at me when i say "i don't support any club" is pretty funny.

"What you don't support anyone?!?" they roar, i say "no thats right, i don't support anyone, if i'm not into football why the [censored] would i?" that usually shuts them up, although from that day on i'm not in their "normal" book, like a give a flying [censored].

The people on that program are no different, they expect everyone else to share the same goals that they do, subscribe to the same social norms and bores that they do, and cannot comprehend anyone that would rather play a computer game than spend 3 hours watching a crappy talk show like theirs, or killing off their brain cells with whatever recreational drug of choice is their favourite.

They are small-minded sheep, too afraid to find an interesting hobby like growing bonsai trees, learning a musical instrument like the bag-pipe for example, painting or even yes playing computer games, which are just as valid as books aor film as entertainment, because they are scared stiff of being criticised or laughed at by their peers, and as a result they only ever do, think or say what the majority say, what a pathetic life that is, and they have the nerve to laugh at others, hah!
