advlt Gamers Are Weird

Recently the hosts of The Today Show took a break from their regular talk show schedule to laugh at the thought of advlt gamers.

"Do you think it's okay for men to play video games in their 30s and over?" Asked one of the announcers, unable to get through the question without breaking into laughter.

Kathie Lee Gifford didn't wait to weigh in with her opinion, proudly proclaiming "No, that's weird. Xbox."

"The answer is no," added some guy named Donny Deutsch, who Wikipedia says is a "TV personality." "When you're in your thirties, there should be something more on your mind or attention than video games."

After agreeing that it's okay for parents to play games with their kids, Hoda Kotb provided the last glimmering insight, stating that the question is only referring to "those weird ones in the basemant."

We could, as GameSetWatch pointed out, respond to their criticisms with the fact that the average gamer is now 37, that women make up 42% of gamers, and that a whopping 29% of gamers are now over the age of 50 - which by the Today Show's standards would make them really weird. But I'm alright with this trio's unduly harsh judgment, because honestly, I can't think of anything weirder than listening to what a bunch morning talk show hosts blab about in-between commercials for reality shows and soap operas.

I guess watching TV is much better then.

Thoughts?

Wow, those people have no idea that video games are an art just like books and movies - not a children's toy.

Wow, i didn't know shows from the 80's are still shown. Or is just the host's attitudes that are from the 80's? :hehe:

Meanwhile, in today's world... *is 30 and goes play New Vegas*

What's with the "Xbox" comment? It sounds like she was trying to prove that she knows about video games by just spouting out the name of the first console that came to mind.

I bet the only game they know is stuff like Call of Duty, not the more serious games with great storylines.

Non gamers can't give opinions about games. That goes for everything else as well, you can't discuss something you never tried.

It reminds of the Mass Effect vs Fox News stuff, at one point the woman who's against it says that everything she's saying is based on research, then the invited game expert asks her if she had ever played the game and she answers "Errr...no (in a "Why should I?" way)" . Things like that make me really mad.

I disagree. I dont see games as art. I see them as entertainment.

People over 30 who watch tv are weird.

My mother is like one of those people "your 18 your supposed to be growing out of videogames" *mentaly swears at her* Uh huh.

I guess it depends on the game. I mean, I wouldn't see CoD as art, but games like those in TES, Fable 1, Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age 1, and even Halo for its story, I would consider art.

EDIT: On a whole though, I view the video game media as an art. I mean, there are artistic movie and non artistic movies, but movies are still art. As are games.

I remember when I was 10 and playing GTA, shooting those hokers and robbing the liquour stores. Obviously games such as Viva Pinata and GTA, Red Dead, etc are meant for kids... When will people learn...

Don't worry everyone, the hosts of the Today Show are simply uncultured plebians who have no familiarity with higher forms of artistic expression. You can't possible expect their uncouth minds to understand or appreciate interactive art experiences.

I would suggest that they indulge in some modern interactive art, but - as they say - "pearls before swine".

Never google that phrase, even with moderate search. God damnit google.

I see them as entertainment. I dont really remember feeling emotional, maybe I felt sad in like 4 games (halo reach, halo 3, RDR and metro 2033), not enough to call it art, its entertainment to me, nothing more.

Most games I play are for fun and ave no emotional effects at all. Aside from rage/ hapiness when you find a capmer, then kill them.

Because the Today Show is known for their knowledge about games....years ago, a guy came in with a Metal Gear Solid 3 disc, and had everyone try it. All they did was mess around with the camera.

A lot of the games I've played had emotional effects. I hardly ever play modern games anymore, so maybe they've changed.

Do you consider a painting as not being a work of art because you don't care for it?
Do you think, because you personally do not feel for something, it is rid of its artistic value?

It seems like there are a lot of people who are still unwilling to admit to themselves that the video game, something that used to be for kids and nerds, is actually becoming a very widely popular and more serious form of entertainment.

It's mainly ignorance. They don't know any better because it's not something they've ever taken seriously.
