Allow us to re-spec

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:11 am

I love how terribly constructed the arguments "against" re-speccing are.

1.) "It will ruin the replay value!" - Then don't use the option.
2.) "It will ruin the immersion!" - Again, don't use it then.
3.) "It ruins the fun of it and allows players to swap skills that could make an encounter easier!" - Don't use it. Who cares if it makes someone else's experience shorter?
4.) "It would take resources to implement that could be better spent elsewhere!" - No...not really.
5.) "Ok, but limit the number to make it balanced" - Balance? Who cares what other people do in their game?

Do you guys not understand that ALREADY PC gamers can re-perk? How has that adversely affected your game? Oh it hasn't? Hmm ain't that something! All this does is put in a more "appropriate" way to do this in-game as well as giving console gamers the opportunity to re-perk since they do not have the luxury of the console command or mods currently. This has absolutely no, zero zip nada, downside to players who do not want to use this feature. Stop being whiny "elitist and purists" complaining about something like this. For many players, THEIR fun is NOT restarting just to re-allocate some Perks at the time did not realize svcked or did not like. Some people do not like rehashing the SAME thing over just to get back to that point. Let me ASSURE you it IS rehashing due to the moronic idea of the "clean slate" approach they have with character creation further.

The point is that the designers clearly made the game in a way that made you live with the character you made. If you want to mod it out, fine, but stop asking them to modify the game in ways that totally destroy their original design. You might as well ask them to include the option to make all dragons neon green and pink. Sure, it doesn't affect people who don't use it, but it compromises the integrity of the original design by adding a pointless feature.

pretty much like playing a platformer with infinite lives or a car game with no damage...boring

if you perk wrong, that's your fault and you should not be able to change them and if you want to try other builds you need to do a new char.

Here, this is how your statement SHOULD read.

"if you I perk wrong, that's your my fault and you I should not be able to won't change them and if you I want to try other builds you I need to do a new char...but I don't care how you play or what your idea of fun is as it does not affect me"

You forgot the 'sense of pride in getting to 100 in a certain skill' argument that I made

Reperking would not reset skill gain only perk point selection. Plus, that really isn't an argument as the time has already been invested to get a skill to 100.

Spam 2000 bracers = 100 Illusion
Spam 2000 bracers = 100 Block
Spam 2000 bracers = 100 Two-handed
Spam 2000 bracers = 100 Destruction

The respec option smacks of greed and laziness. The game was advertised as "You are what you play" - and it's exactly that. Remember Todd's 'boredom and frustration' graph from his last presentation? Well where would the pride come from in working your way to 100 in Illusion, if you could just spam crafting to get there? More people would be coming on the forum saying, "Uh? This game is dumb. I made 2000 leather bracers and got all the perks in the one-handed skill tree"

Your skills will be at the same levels, it's the perks that you are re-specing. So you can get Deep Freeze instead of Intense Flames on the Destruction Tree but you can't get Shadow Warrior on the sneak tree unless you have actually trained sneak to 100.

What? By spamming daggers?

Listen, there's not been a big outcry for a repec option because there's no need for one. It would be a waste of development time and money to put one in now.

Spamming daggers? You do realize that I can power level virtually every skill in one form or another and actually "spamming" daggers takes more time than you people like to give it credit.

There actually has been. Not a day goes by without 2-3 threads remaining on the front page discussing this very matter. Also, please see my example number "4" of idiotic arguments pertaining to the waste of development time and money.

Again, the designers clearly chose to design the perk system in a very specific way. If they had wanted to include an option to respec, they would have. This isn't WoW, so they didn't. If you want to mod it in, fine, but quit asking the designers to change their concepts to fit the whining demands of a few people who can't handle the idea that they aren't actually meant to "beat" everything on one character.

Last time I checked it is legitimate considering this is how the game is designed. This isn't an exploit, it is either a horrific oversight by the development team or working as intended.

the outcome is the same:
if someone perks wrons, it's their fault and they should not be able to change them, and if someone wants to try other builds there's the "new game" feature.

Who are you to tell me how the game should be played? You do realize that I can "beat" everything on one character right? There are no more factions or choices. I do not pick my alignment, it is completely arbitrary. For all intents and purposes the game is designed to accommodate MANY playstyles. See, when I reroll characters it is not to repeat everything but with magicka instead of swords. When I roll another character it is to play from a totally different perspective. Intentionally NOT completing content to "save" for another character isn't what I expect. As an avid RPG gamer, I expect that games like Skyrim would have enough variety that allows me to play down different paths. It does not. There is a lot to do, but really just one choice. You do the content, or you don't. There are not multiple outcomes or decisions.

Please stop with the "WoW" comments also, that is just tiring to use such an obsolete pop culture reference now, the novelty of this has long since vanished. It further is not crazy to ask for a change in design if a large enough audience believes that this should be done. Developers would be wise to listen to their customer base. Just because something is in the game or it is designed a certain way does not mean that we should all agree with it. There is plenty wrong with Skyrim or that can be improved.

You shouldn't be concerned about anyone but yourself. Don't speak of what others should/should not be able to do. You should not care because it does not affect your game at all. The only reason TO care is because you are a busybody who enjoys sticking your nose in other people's business.

When I started my first character I stupidly put a point into resto. It was stupid because I was not a mage and I did not yet know the game had so many damn potions laying around. I also stupidly put a perk into lock picking, stupid for obvious reasons.

After that I never felt I did not have perk points when I needed them. Who cares about a few misplaced perks by the time their lvl 30. Easy enough to fix your character by then. At lvl 50 I was staring to fill up new perk trees.

IMO if you screw up so bad you would need to do a re spec you should probably start over...

I'm sorry, I missed the part where I told you how to play. In fact, I told you that you could mod it in. Just don't demand that the designers "fix" something that was clearly an intentional design choice. You have this odd idea that something that you don't like must be "wrong" instead of "something I don't like" (hint: it's the latter).

Bugs, etc. are things that need to be fixed. Because those are actual problems with the game. Lack of a re-spec feature, lack of spellcrafting, inclusion of perks, streamlining of attributes, etc. are not wrong. They're design decisions, which inspire lots of debate on a forum that represents about 1% of the playerbase for this game.
