Annoying, repetitive NPC chit chat

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:49 pm

I need to see that interview before I beleive it. Anyways, for the topic at hand, the OP is right. Luckily, for me I have a mod that cuts down on the pvssyr.

I don't know exactly from which interview it's exactly, but there's a little cut-out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91HRAX71ZEU&feature=channel_video_title

Basically the general tone of the interview is: "It's nice that you have some feedback regarding our game, but we don't care and are doing our own thing".

Really wish they randomized it with a chance of saying nothing at all, along with delaying the value before they say anything, or have some way of making them remember they had said something recently and not say it again for a week or something. Anything.

Well, you know, if they had added more lines for random encounters and just passing NPCs for each [censored] race they would have spent another entire year just voice-acting around. I am sure voice acting already was a huge hassle, and there already is a great variety of things they say, so let's not get so picky.

Not really. Voice acting is actually one of the quickest things that can get done.

Even worse is when you need to do something near an NPC, like the enchanter at Windhelm marketplace. That high elf in the booth next to you just won't shut up :swear: But that, and TV commercials, is what the mute button was invented for :hehe:

Look, I KNOW you work at the general goods store. I'm in the store. You're in the store. I see you working.

The alchemist in Whiterun is the worst. Talked to me non-stop the entire time I was there. At first I thought the developers had messed up, and then I saw the genius. She's insane. I sneaked in at midnight one night and she was still there, talking to nobody, non-stop.

I was wondering if this bugged anyone as much as me. I hate the way characters keep repeating the same line to me every time they see me. ...

I absolutely hate that!!

Not so much that it is the same line, but that they say it every single time you come within ear short of them (10 feet or so it seems)

Fortunately for me, I'm on the PC and can use mods. The first mod I've used was one to stop greetings unless you pretty much bump into someone. That was my first mod and it is an essential mod for me (kind of like the one that keeps the prev Fighters Guild porters from following you in Oblivion).

Why Bethesda though it would be good for NPCs to blast the same line about their life everytime you're anywhere around them is a mystery to me.

Imagine if you were walking around New York, or London, or any town or city in the real world, and every stranger you come close to started babbling about themselves!!!

NPC should talk to the NPC only when they're addressed. They can talk as much as they want between themselves (about mudcrabs and arrows in the knees...) as long as they don't spout generic nonsense when I come close to them.

OMG LOL I just wanted to post about the Alchemist in Whiterun! I avoid brewing potions there (well now that I have 2 houses and my own Alchemy labs I don't have to anymore LOL) Yea, she can be pretty annoying!

Variety isn't the biggest issue though....

it's repetition.

Just stand next to some NPC and get up for a glass of water with the volume up enough so you can hear it the whole time.

If you're not walking back to the couch faster to hurry up and move your character..... then there is something inhuman about you lol

10 races x 2 genders x 2-3 general greetings "hi", "welcome" who would be used most of the time.
Keep beggars as it fits, shopkeepers can announce their wares to passerby.
Guards might also come with comments, but guard type comments way less arrow in knee.

The one I hate the most is "I don't claim to be the best blacksmith in whiterun" etc.

Strongly agree with this - I eventually switched the voices off because of Adrienne Avenicci's (sp) incessant whining about her 'advising the advisor'. But, the downside there is that there is useful stuff that you don't hear (like your own character taking damage in battle).

Perhaps an option to mute certain NPCs would be useful, though not being a programmer, I'm not sure how difficult that would be to implement.

After my dungeon runs, I fast travel to Whiterun and begin selling my items. I start at the Blacksmith and work my way around to the Sky Forge. This how my trip plays out..

Amren: “You tried mercenary work? It might suit you.

Brenuin: “My favorite drinking buddy! Let’s get some mead.”

Nazeem: “Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh what am I saying-of course you haven’t.”

Ysolda “It’s a fine day with you around.”

Ahlam: “Looking for my husband Nazeem? Check the Jarl’s backside, that’s usually were he stuffs himself these days.”

Old Hag: “Come to check on an old woman, do your good deed for the day, hmm?

Little Brat: Boys, Girls, Elders, there is no body I won’t fight.”

Siguard: I work for Belathor at the General Goods store.”

OK, selling at the Skyforge is done, now to go home and store the leftovers,…….

Seriously Bethesda? I do not need to hear people chatting with me when I am not directly talking to them and just walking by. If I wish to speak to them, I will do by interacting with them. You know how freaking annoying it is trying to hear a person talk to you about a quest or general information and some random NPC comes by spewing out bull crap-VERY annoying!

For the next game, I suggest you muzzle the NPCs unless you speak to them.

There is a mod on nexus that turns off NPC greetings. You can look there to fix the problem.
