Annoying, repetitive NPC chit chat

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:19 am

I was wondering if this bugged anyone as much as me. I hate the way characters keep repeating the same line to me every time they see me. I mean can't they just say it once, then just say hello after that? What's worse is when I'm in my house, and my housecarl and my wife just keep repeating their line constantly, about every four seconds as long as I'm standing near them. What is this contributing to the game? Did it really not occur to them that it might get a tiny little bit annoying for people?

Does it bother anyone else? Is it likely they will fix it?

In my opinion it's the worst part of the game but no, they aren't going to change it. Now come 200 identical "Modzorz ftw" posts...

Skyrim would actually be a better game if NPCs didn't automatically feel the need to talk to you whenever you pass. Their lines are fine for me, but they should only speak to me when I talk to them first. At least then the repetitiveness wouldn't be so obvious.

Somebody did have a great Idea that NPCs only say their lines when you make eye contact with them. It's not annoying...yet!

I don't know that for a fact, but them changing something like that is unlikely based on Bethesda's traditional "let mods fix it" approach. And petitions aren't allowed on these forums, nor would it likely do any good.

Then what about an aggressive leaflet campaign?

Oh yes...Before I even got two hours into the game I added the Reduced NPC Greeting mod. No it seems all the dialogue is unique or at least give that impression.

Poor, poor Bethesda.

Either it's a lack of voice actor variety but more NPC greetings... or more voice actors but live inside a rendition of Bill Murray's "Groundhog Day". Not matter what, they're having a hard time getting it right.

Now come 200 identical "Modzorz ftw" posts...

"Modzorz ftw x 200"

... there, I saved them the trouble.

Can you imagine if real life were like this?

Walking down a busy street as complete strangers pass by and just randomly blurt things out at you like "I work at Starbuck's. It's really hectic, but I get free coffee." and "God gave you two hands, and you use them both for your 9-iron. I respect that."

I go home on my one guy and it's all "Yes my love what do you need? Yes my love what do you need? Yes my love what do you need? Yes my love what do you need?..."

Then I go home on my other guy and Mjoll is all like "Do you need anything my love? Do you need anything my love? Do you need anything my love? Do you need anything my love?" Every 2 [censored] seconds.

I never thought I'd hate being called "my love" so much.

My last guy though... thank god Senna knows how to keep her mouth shut. I guess they teach them how to be good housewives in the temple of Dibella.

Wow OP..... if you look hard enough you might be able to find something less petty to gripe about.

Might be the trees are too tall for you.... or is the water too blue?

Geez.... no freekin wonder Bethesda never make random posts in these forums.

I didn't spend the last several years working on this masterpiece... and I'm getting pissed at most of the posters here. I can't imagine what they think.

I know what they're thinking:

"Gee... should I get my wife that $5000 diamond necklace that she's always wanted now, or do I get her that brand new Lexus with that fat bonus check I just got from developing Skyrim?"

I think us lowly forum posters is beyond their thoughts and/or concerns right now.

There's even an interview where Todd Howard states how Bethesda doesn't give a [censored] about user feedback.

The Devs are all advlts and no doubt can handle criticism without your help just fine. If you get this bent out of shape with people complaining about a single aspect of a game you bought for $60/40€, I have to wonder how you tend to react to people criticizing you personally.

Yes she is annoying, worse as I actually like her.
Why not an greeting instead of their life story, trader in drunken huntsman and the beggar in Whiterun are nice as they actually greets you, other tell their stupid one liners every time you pass them.

I need to see that interview before I beleive it. Anyways, for the topic at hand, the OP is right. Luckily, for me I have a mod that cuts down on the pvssyr.

It doesn't annoy me too greatly because I just don't pay attention after a while. That said, eye contact suggestions sounds good. What really annoys me is that after only having 8 or so voice actors in Oblivion, Bethesda have seemingly only stepped the number up to 12 or 14. When every prominent character has the same voice as another prominent character it does take away from the overall illusion. Worth every cent paying for extra voice actors, and worth every cent sitting down for a day and writing additional greetings and what not.
