Annoying, repetitive NPC chit chat

Ahlam: “Looking for my husband Nazeem? Check the Jarl’s backside, that’s usually were he stuffs himself these days.”

I simply cannot stand that quote, [censored] [censored].

This thread combined with http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1329183-skyrim-fail-142-no-ambient-dialogue/ thread would make for a much more believable world as far as dialog is concerned. Basically everything said in the thread I linked, and the generic little bits of dialog almost only happen if you make eye contact with an NPC.

I agree. People don`t continuously talk to you like this even in ancient times, especially with such a limited vocabulary.

I also find it annoying how they continue talking even after you run past them. there`s this one guy in Solitude who starts talking about how he`s a lecturer or something. It sounds really boring- I shoot past him and he`s still blabbing to himself while near to the otherside of the city! It`s very unimmersive.

They need to fix this so...

1. Don`t talk quite so often and just say nothing like a lot of people in real life do 70% of the time when you walk past them.

2. If you do leave them while they`re talking, they say something like `Oh!`at the first sentence and stop. Or maybe fade out the speech.

There should be some random speech from them about 20% of the time. having them say nothing at all would make for a very unimmersive city too!

Yeah I agree 100%. The NPC's need to not shout greetings at you every time you run past. Maybe if you get right in their face for 2 seconds or more but not just because you ran by.

So True.

And not only do they keep talking when you obviously do not care and walk away, BUT they also will follow you into a building or even your own damn home to finish the conversation

They might tweak the distance you have to be from an NPC to get them to talk to you in the upcoming patch. IIRC, this was the same problem in one of the Fallouts and it went away after one of the patches.

WE DON'T GET A LOT OF STRANGERS IN RIVERWOOD.

NO LOLLIGAGGIN'.

MIND YOURSELF AROUND THE JARL.

Ya' know, in New Vegas people only spouted their one liners if you talked to them. Other than that, they would just say either "Hello.", "Hm?", or "Oh, hi." or just ignore you.

I have a question, out of character as well. Why? I mean from Morrowind to Skyrim we've had this exact thing, NPC's turning to talk to you, sure they aren't long drawn out repetetive sentences but....you know...still doing what has been done for the past decade :0

NPC should talk to the NPC only when they're addressed. They can talk as much as they want between themselves (about mudcrabs and arrows in the knees...) as long as they don't spout generic nonsense when I come close to them.

I think that would be the best and simplest solution. They wouldn't have to record any more dialog or anything, and it can't be that complicated to do if one of the first mods to come out did something similar. But it Todds got the attitude of we don't give a stuff then I guess that's that.

I think the worst ones for me are my wife and housecarl. Whenever I'm home I leave the housecarl outside, and I'm almost at the point of sending Isolda back to Whitrun just to get some peace and quiet, which would be a shame. But she's bugged anyway. She said something about if there's not going to be a ceremony I want my ring back, so apparently she doesn't think we're even married.

Agree, they should only say the same thing to you ONCE.

Lydia: I am sworn to carry your burdens. Wow am I tired of hearing that. And don't forget the Whiterun blacksmith continually bragging about how she advises her father or how she's not the best blacksmith in Whiterun. Heck I have to be better than she is by now.

What do you mean? If you mean like guards speaking.. I think your right.. But if you mean NPC's.. Then you finished every quest in the game.. Whenever I do a quest everyone talks about it for a second then drops it then goes back to living..

yeah, they ask you a question and you cannot even talk to them back, WTF? In oblivion you could actually talk to the guards but in Skyrim they just talk randomly and accuse you of stuff you haven't done.

Also, yeah, please shut up, I don't want to hear the guards random opinions about what I've done in the game.

Don`t we already have a thread like this...?

Anyway, I was so happy when I walked past one guard and he actually said nothing at all!

Guards in reality would talk to you about 10% of the time if that and I`m pretty sure you`d be put on a charge if all you ever did as a guard was talk random to everyone who walked past you!

I'll look for it later today.
Can't guarantee that I find it though..

I'm sure that every developer think that way. They're going to make a game that they enjoy making and then take in the fans feed-back. That's how it works.

"For me, one of the most frustrating things in Skyrim is having an unrelated NPC speaking over the top of an important speech, just because they walked past you and decided to tell you about themselves."

That's the other thing that I find amazing. All the work that someone put into creating an important scene, to have it ruined like that (and it happens more often than not). It makes you wonder when they were making the game why they didn't change it for that reason if nothing else.

I was wondering if this bugged anyone as much as me. I hate the way characters keep repeating the same line to me every time they see me. I mean can't they just say it once, then just say hello after that? What's worse is when I'm in my house, and my housecarl and my wife just keep repeating their line constantly, about every four seconds as long as I'm standing near them. What is this contributing to the game? Did it really not occur to them that it might get a tiny little bit annoying for people?

Does it bother anyone else? Is it likely they will fix it?

i expected this aspect of skyrim to be top notch. i am bitterly disappointed.
weak on beth's part.
