Any way to allow censored words?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 5:27 am

The only valid reason (scientifically proven of course) to swear, is to ease PHYSICAL and MENTAL pain.

Any other times are without reason, logic or indeed intelligence.

I read that some recent research suggested that overuse of this means of pain relief tends to render it ineffective. I guess the same as other forms of pain relief, then...

Swear words were words the Vikings used among each other and had totally different meanings to what they are today. People who heard the vikings used those words probably associated them with violence and anger, since the vikings were attacking villages and killing everyone, so I guess they took on that meaning to them. The meaning of words change over time, in 1000 years the F word will probably mean "food" or something like that, and our descendants will be calling us lunatics for presuming otherwise.

I have not found that to be true at all in life. In fact, I find people who are offended by letters and sounds to be infinitely more childish than people who might want to use them in certain ways occasionally.

Not going to happen as the forums are 13+.

Having been on the receiving end of pms that consist largely of "Censored you, you censored pile of stinking censored. Censored censored censored idiot nerd censored in your mother's censored basemant you censored censored censored." does not make me consider the sender to be mature and inteliigent. It usually ends up with a sigh, an  , and a logging in the admin/mod forum for future reference. Swearing doesn't make one seem articulate, well-spoken, or well-mannered.

Another point to make, is that if you start being lenient on language, how many people will think being racist is fine to?

How about finding a way to express yourself meaningfully that doesn't involve vulgar language  Novel approach, I know.

I am a habitual potty-mouth in real-life, but I don't actually find it a chore to refrain from swearing on this or any forum I participate in. About the only time I find I can't refrain is when I viciously stub my toe for the nine millionth time on the corner of my desk.

I came to move this thread but someone beat me to it.

This is a 13+ rated board. Some of the games with sections on this forum are T rated so we will continue to be rated as a +13 board. That means no swearing as per our forum rules.

My personal thoughts on it is that swear words have become so common place that it probably doesn't matter anymore but on the other hand I quite like being a member of a forum where people express themselves without swear words flying all over the place.

That said, you can type out a swear word now and then and not get into trouble. Our rule is that you may not bypass the autocensor. You won't be warned for swearing unless you spam the autocensor repeatedly swearing or you bypass it. To me it seems much easier to just type out the word and let the autocensor do it's work than to go to the extra effort to replace letters, use asterisks or otherwise change up the word to bypass it.

cursing is the cry of an ignorant mind trying to make itself heard.

One would do good as to look up what Stephen Fry has to say on the matter.
In short, I disagree.

"Swearing is a really important part of one's life. It would be impossible to imagine going through life without swearing and without enjoying swearing... There used to be mad, silly, prissy people who used to say swearing was a sign of a poor vocabulary -such utter nonsense. The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies and the kind of person who says swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary usually have a pretty poor vocabulary themselves... The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest or -is just a [censored] lunatic... I haven't met anybody who's truly shocked at swearing, really, they're only shocked on behalf of other people. Well, you know, that's preposterous... or they say 'it's not necessary'. As if that should stop one doing it! It's not necessary to have coloured socks, it's not necessary for this cushion to be here, but is anyone going to write in and say 'I was shocked to see that cushion there, it really wasn't necessary'? No, things not being necessary is what makes life interesting -the little extras in life. "

One of the reasons I love this forum is that it's so formal compared to other forums. However, I would like to replace the censor tags with word filters. We already have a few. I talked to the mods about this in the mod thread, suggesting to change curse words into "Elder Scrolls" curse words :P.

We had that back in the day, it was great. [Donkey] was "spotted owl," hence the :spotted owl: emoticon. [Female dog] was Noble Seamstress, iirc. I guess [censored] is more universal and less work, but it does take the charm out of it.

I prefer to think of cursing as a means to add flavor (and in some cases, context) to a sentence. I wont lie and say I respect your opinion as anyone fragile enough to be offended by a slightly broader vocabulary would strike me as the ignorant one.

I like to think of swearing as the hammer of one's vocabulary, and it's no-one's fault but your own if you don't know how to use a hammer when it's appropriate to do so.

As some have said, i've searched for the censor filter in the settings. I thougt i was too dumb to find it by it doesnt exist at all.

As i find swearing-for-the-sake-of-just-swearing pointless, i see no harm in read it in a ordinary post.

No one talks like: "Holy censored! Look at that car!".

Well, i guess i made my point.

Can you, moderators (programmers), make it a toggle option?

I'd appreciate it.

Incorporating swear words effectively into one's conversation with skill and appropriate usage indicates a widened and broad vocabulary.

Excessively using swear words with little change of use indicates lack of intelligence.

I got mixed feelings about it. I mean on one end the games (Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout3, Fallout3 NV) are 18+. Thus it makes since that we should be able to use 18+ language. However if we want that right, then I also think that users should have to age verify to access the forums.

On the other hand. This is the internet. It's rarely an expression of raw emotion, you have time to think as you type. It's really not necessary, and it's certainty not what a clear thinking advlt would do.

My honest beef the censors is that they are a bit hyper active. Meaning they sometimes censor things that don't need to be censored. As in a combo of characters spells a curse word, but the user is not cursing, Then you get things like.

(censored)umed for assumed.

The forum development isn't done by Bethesda (and the moderators only have limited control over the forums anyway: things like the censor lists are managed by the site admins) but by Invision Power Services; so unless it appears as a feature in a future release of their software, we won't be seeing it I'm afraid.

Find whatever you like. The ability to accept societal customs, even the ones you don't agree with, is an important milestone in maturation.

The ability to break down social barriers is an important milestone in social progression.

One I frequently run into is such a silly filter... It's an 'r' word that means to be slowed down. I just choose to replace it with something more pointed since that fairly innocuous word is censored. I guess talking about the thing that does the slowing is allowed however as the censor allows it with the -ant ending. Heh, that's BOVINEFECES! ;)

You may not be a child, however others who use this forum might be.
As others had said either way you agreed to the forum rules when registering.

>children
>in the forums of a company that makes mostly M rated games

If they play Bethesda games, they can handle cussing.
