Do any of you like the Thalmor?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:17 pm

I actually like the Orcs. They don't all act like their [censored] doesn't stink. They also don't treat every other race as less than they are.

Also the orcs encounters are typically like this:

Orc: "Excuse me... I'm old but amazingly awesome, would you do me a favor and try your hardest... *Snicker* Yeah, try your "Hardest" To kill me? You know... me, the guy surrounded by dead sabretooth tigers, what have you done today pansy?"

Ummm.... Its Michael Kirkbride.

He pretty much wrote ALL the lore for the game.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Michael_Kirkbride

But it said he hasn't worked for Bethesda since Morrowind (other than making a few of the in-game books for Oblivion). He didn't do anything for Skyrim (according to that site). Does Bethesda consider the stuff he posts online in forums as canon? Did Bethesda ever make a statement regarding that?

It also says he consults with the current writers. He's not just some fanfiction writer. lol

The main reason I dislike the Thalmor so much is because I always really liked the high elves culture. The Thalmor are extreme fanatical versions of one end of high elven society, who came to power in a bloody coup by killing the rightful leaders of Summerset Isle. And I am afraid that the actions of the Thalmor have/will end up hurting Alinor and the high elves in the end.
Well that will give an opportunity for the Altmer resistance to show itself. I'm roleplaying my Altmer as a resistance agent who's been sent to Skyrim to keep tabs on the Thalmor's activities there.

I recall reading that the Altmer kill any of their newborns that are considered "defective." Can anyone confirm/ deny that?

Definitely he's not just some random fanfic writer. He's made a lot of the offical lore in the past. But in the Imperial Library site where the text about the Thalmor is posted, it says his writings there are "Unofficial lore documents gathered from forums".
The main word being "unofficial". I just can't accept that the Thalmor want to destroy the whole universe just based solely on unofficial forum posts, even if they were created by a talented author who used to work for Bethesda years ago.

They are The Enclave in Skyrim for me which means execute on sight. I even went to a certain fort where someone on the other side of where I am in the Civil War was being held prisoner, simply for the joy of slaughtering every last one of them. I also have made it a habit of clearing out their Embassy on a routine basis. Great for lot's of practice and loot to sell. Yes, I agree - well done Bethesda! I might be telling tales out of school, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit for a large DLC to have some more exploration into this faction. If not, it would make an excellent mod!

The Thalmor are allegorical to the narrow-minded politicians. Currently, yes, their deeds are not beneficial to all races/people. But I believe they can be changed from their conservative and traditional roots. Damn elitists.

The in game lore has definitely gone against some of his ideas. For example, it should have been Lorkhan, not Akatosh, who visited the dying Al'esh and made the Amulet of Kings. What it comes down to is it might not be canon, though certainly the Thalmor plans make perfect sense when you consider the fate of the Dwemer, but which is most interesting to you.

That's the reason it's 'lore', not 'history'. Even the in game books are written by flawed, prejudiced, possibly egocentric authors, and should be taken by your character with a pinch of salt. If there is something you don't want to believe, simply don't believe it. It's a single player game, as we are told so often, but in a way it's a single player world as well, open to your interpretation.
Just remember, though Nirn looks pretty Earthlike in places, and it's men look like us, we are dealing in the background with a world in which the laws of physics are dead gods, the sun is a hole ripped in possibility through which the magic of a primordial 'heaven' flows, and visiting a shrine in the wilderness will make even the greediest merchant give you better prices. Mundane concerns are not always on the agenda.

i wonder when beth will let us play the villains, i'm tired of this hero crap. i really don't hate Thalmor they're just typical bad guys who won't last long ( lol at ppl being so easly provoked and kill them) . The only problem i have is with the Blades and nords i don't know why i dislike them so much.

The Thalmor are pretty much representative of any 'observer'/'advisor'/'official' from any superpower flexing it's muscles in a weaker nation that it wishes to control. A peace treaty which let them in was tantamount to complete surrender.

They attack me on sight now, even though I'm still walking the neutral path. They are always good for some loose change if I happen to stumble across them out in the wilds, with no witnesses.

From the UESP lore page :
"Early literature by man painted the High Elves in poor light, though the impartiality of these accounts is questionable. It was suggested that the Altmer practiced eugenic infanticide, putting to death nine in ten of their newborns due to impurities, that Altmeri names are simply combinations of numbers in their own language, and that Altmer culture revolves around displaying social status. Later writings contain no mention of any of these practices; whether they were fabricated, exaggerated, or discontinued is not known. "

No, we can neither confirm nor deny any of it. So much better that way.

There's a reason TVTropes calls them "Elf Nazis"

The only thing missing in fact is the "great leader" which I've never heard mention of.
