Archery post 1.5

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:37 pm

Is anyone else having issues with archery after 1.5?

- Finishing shots seem to trigger randomly, not only when the enemy dies, but also more often than not when you have missed the target, meaning you end up with a slo-mo of the enemy (still alive) charging you, and you are unable to retaliate until the cut-scene finishes.

- Any enchantments on the bow seem to randomly trigger when the arrow looses, rather than when it hits the target, meaning that as soon as you fire, your target is paralised (for instance) even though the arrow misses them, since they immediately fell to the ground.

-Aiming seems to be skewed, in that after 1.5, the target doesnt seem to represent the sweet aiming spot like it used to - i seem to miss one in two shots now, where i never did before, especially when aiming at a moving target.

Man, I hope its not just me!

Your post makes me think I may need to play offline a while so I don't get 1.5 until they fix this as I play predominantly as an archer.

I've seen a finishing move when the target survived a couple of times, but that's it.

According to some other forums, 1.5 launched this morning on consoles, or at least on the XBox, so I'll be trying it out in about 3 hours. I will let you know if I notice anything, as I am almost exclusively an archer, and any small changes will probably be fairly obvious. I really hope this isn't the case though, because I had just figured out how to consistently land a hit from the maximum arrow range :-(

I like that they re-did the kill cam shots, the first set released with 1.5 drove me crazy.

I've had only one instance where I got a kill cam, even though the arrow missed.

More importantly, myself, and a number of other players on this forum and the Steam forum had their damage increased with the release of 1.5

I have two archers. One has an ebony bow, and her damage increased from 36 to 88. My second archer did 120 damage, after 1.5 it went up to 221.

I'm on the PC, and have no mods. Other then 1.5, nothing else installed or changed, especially not things like enchants or smithing that could account for the sudden increase. My first archer is a permanent level one character, which means no skills and no perks.

All together, I think there were about 8-9 of us who had these strange damage increases, which is probably to small a number for Bethesda to figure out what happened.

Great to hear! I wasn't sure it would make it to the console version. Is it pretty from above and below?

There's another post in this forum about the water. Some of us see a discoloration in the water. I swam across the river near Solitude last night (first time I've been in the water since 1.5 was released) and the water had a brownish tint to it all the way across.

It must be a console specific problem. I haven't seen anything like that before, on PC.

I've noticed this one some with the bullseye perk, on long range shots occasionally the target falls over paralyzed before the arrow reaches them causing the shot to actually miss, easier to spot if you also have eagle eye and steady hand perks. anyway, it's not simply enchanted bows because I never use enchanted bows, lol. alchemy effects don't seem to have this problem though. using a paralysis poison paralyzes on contact, not before. at least so far.

Also, I'm on PC.

Nope your not the only one, I popped off a couple rounds this morning and notice that my target would become paralyzed long before the arrow left the bow and I would technically miss my target. I also noticed that the kill cams don't trigger the same way for ranged kill cams as they do for melee kill cams, I can count the kills with my sword and I know after killing 2 out of 4 baddies that I will get a kill animation on the 3rd & 4th baddy, but it seems to be more random with the ranged kill cams I am only getting 1 for every 4 is what it seems like. I also tested to see if I could miss and still get a kill cam and I did, I thought they fixed this and that's why it was delayed for console??

I've had a few killcams where the arrow missed, but not enough to horrify me. Occasional annoyance. Same with magic killcams on my mage. Hopefully they will address that in a followon update. As for the damage increase you noted, I have noticed it as well. But I also happened to notice that your listed bow damage changes a great deal, depending on which type of arrows you are using. If you are using steel arrows (+10 damage), your bow will have a 'normal' damage listed. But as you start equipping arrows with higher damage ratings, you will start to see huge jump in your bow's listed damage. Try swapping from steel arrows to daedric arrows (+24 damage), and you'll see what I mean. I don't remember arrows having that huge of an effect on bow output, before 1.5.

I have to say I like the effect, a lot. Before, there was really not a whole lot of difference between using lowbie arrows or high end arrows. I mean, if your bow is doing 200 damage, adding another 5 or 14 damage by upgrading your arrows, was pretty limp. Now, getting and using high end arrows adds a lot more damage output.

Yes, I've had these problems with kill cams with bows. I did open a thread a few days ago about it, but one of the mods locked it. I actually got killed by a bear while in slow motion kill cam, the arrow missed the bear and I was frozen in cam mode while the bear attcked and killed me.

I play SKYRIM with Xbox 360 and on a sdtv
You poor thing...

On topic: I'm on PS3 and waiting for 1.5, but I hope it doesn't add to the issues this version is already experiencing. In fact, I hoped 1.5 fixes some of them. As for the archery issue, it could be just you, since some of my friends who own xboxes have told me that archery is just fine. Is it happening frequently? Or did you just notice it a few times in a short period?

I'm glad to see more people bringing this up. Yes Aphaea, I'm having the same bugs. I brought this up a while ago when 1.5 beta first came out and everyone tried to tell me it was mods/my imagination. It isn't. Kill cams trigger even when there are multiple enemies around even though everyone says they can't. Kill cams trigger and yet the arrow misses. I thought something wacky was going on with enchantments but I couldn't put my finger on it. Now I see it, though.

Gstaff rather coldly told us there would be no killcam toggle. He may have to revise that statement.

It's not like the kill cam thing happens all the time( due to my good aim) but enough to be concerned about how close you are to your target so as to not be killed during the kill cam, the paralyze thing is a whole other story, I've filled out the sneak tree for my archer along with the archery tree and the combination of the 3x bows in the sneak tree and the paralyze perk in the archery tree makes for bad shoots. The NPC I'm trying to hit with my arrow will drop paralyzed long before my arrow has even left my bow, which in turn makes my arrow miss it's mark, combine this with the kill cam not working like it should = bad business!! Now I have to remain just outside the draw distance of the game so as to have enough time to run the missed kill cam and still be able to defend myself.
Everything else is fine though, my sword and board toon is a blast to play with the new kill cams and the new water visuals are gorgeous.

I'm glad I never bothered getting the level 100 paralyze perk, on my hunter. Seems rather unnecessary, anyway.
