Are all TES games about being a special little shouting drag

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:47 am

I'm pretty sure everyone knows that. Which makes one wonder why anyone would take the time to vocally complain about an optional feature that they already knew was only around for this game.

because i like to state my opinion. people tend to do that on forums...

hopefully this will be the first and last game where your able to use shouts.
A lot of people really love the shout system, me included. The magic about this game is that you can choose to ignore it rather than jipping everybody else. And you still reserve the right to complain here.

You were just as normal in Daggerfall and Arena. Especially Daggerfall.

I agree, not because I don't like the shouts, but because I wouldn't want them to use something like that twice. Especially if at the end of the game you stop the dragons. And no that's not a spoiler, I haven't done the main quest, I'm just guessing.
Spoiler
Alduin is gone, and the world is no longer in danger of being swallowed by the dragon god, but after that there are still dragons in Tamriel, just not their leader.

Unlike oblivion, you aren't tunnelled into the MQ at all in Skyrim. Just don't go too Riverwood after Helgen.

Actually I did. Spoilers have no effect on my viewing or playing experience (I say that as I watch Code Geass for maybe the 15th time). The only reason I didn't know the ending yet is because I haven't bothered to look up how it ends and I'm not concerned with playing the main quest yet lol.

@Antongranis: No, it just makes the emperor rather creepy.

There is some evcent tied to your character threw an Elder Scroll, but the beauty of these games is you can skip the main quest if you choose to do so.

And isn't the fun of it that plenty of people enjoy using the shout system a lot? See? You can use it, or you can choose to ignore it. And then if you ignore it, you can come to the forums and complain about it anyway.

I'm 400 hours into Skyrim and haven't even gotten half way though the MQ, so you're not alone TC. I only beat MW's MQ twice and OB's once, I think a lot of people avoid the main quests in Elder Scrolls games.

Heh, I myself have only played a little of Morrowind but I logged over 500 in Oblivion and only done the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieve's Guild, as well as the Arena once or twice.

In each Elder Scrolls game, you play as a Heroine. A Heroine is someone who is blessed by some sort of power and had a destiny that is already written in the Elder Scrolls. Heroines are also way much stronger than the common person and can achieve much more than anyone else can. You are a Heroine in ALL Elder Scrolls Games. This includes Arena and Daggerfall where it didn't seemed like it.

The Heroines are as follow:
Arena - The Eternal Champion who collected the pieces of the Staff of Chaos and saved the Emperor from Jagnar Tharn while defeating Jagnar Tharn.

Daggerfall - The Agent was sent to investigate the murder of a king but soon found something that changed all of the West Area (Hammerfall and High Rock). Because of this Hero; the Orcs are now equaled, the Underking finally had a resting peace, King of Worms obtained god-like-powers, all wars in the area had ended, and there became one leader of the Illac Bay (Did I spell it right?)

Morrowind - The Nerevarine, a great Dunmer legend reborn! He was destined to destroy Dagoth Ur and stop him once and for all as well ending the Blight and Corpus diseases.

Oblivion - The Champion of Cyrodiil, who help save Tamriel by finding and helping Martin. Without this Hero, Dagon would've won the war.

Skyrim - The Last Dovahkiin is destined to stop Alduin from ending the world in 4E Y201. But Alduin may return when the world will end but this is for the Gods to decide.

Every game besides Morrowind, I think. You're always some guy or gal who the emperor sees special purpose in though.
I thought the only special thing common to any of them was being an imperial prisoner?
You know those imperial prisons.... chock full of heroes just waiting to throw them at any potential crisis.

The only real similarity is the fact that all are connected to a prophecy of an elder scroll.

Which is why I always find it a bit odd (yes, yes, "play how you want") when people complain about being a Destined Hero in a series that (at it's core) is all about Destined Heroes.

(and yes - I say this as someone who has ignored the Oblivion MQ in all but two of my playthroughs. Doesn't mean that I still don't see the game as being very Destined Hero-centered. I also don't see why you'd ignore the MQ, at least the first time. Yes, the game lets you do so, but.... why buy a game if you're not going to at least try it's main story? Just like I wouldn't buy the Lord of the Rings books and then just read the appendices. But, hey, that's just me. Personal opinion, and all that.)

That is also what I do not understand, these games are about so much more than the main quest.
Then there are threads like this that hate you have a destiny tied to some epic event, its a prophecy tied to an Elder Scrolls.
Games are about taking big epic adventures and that is even more prevalent in an RPG.

I feel exactly the same way. I only bought this game because I learned that you can indeed ignore the main quest. Don't go meet with the Jarl in Whiterun and you will never see another dragon. Just explore the land, meet people, kill monsters, and have fun.

The key piece that launches the main questline and gets the dragons flying around, is returning to Whiterun with the Dragonstone. As long as you don't pick up the Dragonstone and bring it back, the main quest will remain frozen, and the dragons will never fly. And you can go about doing whatever else you want. Just be aware that if you do pick up the Dragonstone, it will never come out of your inventory (unless maybe by PC console commands), and you'll have to avoid the Dragonsreach castle from then on.

As said, don't do it.. i don't understand why you don't want to be a little hero? :P .... I love the feeling of going across the mountains and hearing a dragon... i get the sense of "this is my task, if i don't do it, nobody will and the dragon will kill everything... i am the CHOSEN ONE!!!"

gives me goosebumps

Allegedly. As far as I'm aware, there's no for sure confirmation that you're anything more than lucky accident in Morrowind. Some lore buffs could probably shed more light on that.

I don't see why the existence of prophecies within the Elder Scrolls universe means you necessarily have to play as one of these prophesied heroes.
