Just to get these out of the way.

How do you select mods

When we decide we need new mods we get together and throw out names to see what people think. After a while the list will get winnowed down to a select few and we'll start to more seriously discuss the candidates. Eventually Gstaff will have a vote, although this is really a formality, it's always been quite clear who we're choosing before this point.

What are the requirements to become a mod?

You have to be at least 18 and be a member in good standing. This does not necessitate a 0% warning level, but certainly someone with past warnings will have them scrutinized.

There are no expectations in terms of join date or post count, but it is uncommon to have candidates who've been here less than a year.

What makes a good candidate?

Personally I'm looking for people who have a positive presence on the forums - which generally means someone who is helpful, can handle problematic discussions well, and knows when they need to step back because they're getting frustrated. We want a diverse group of mods so it's hard to nail down exact requirements.

Often people who catch our eye are those active in the forums we feel need more help, but as the forums grow I think this is becoming less of an issue. For example, the Skyrim section is one of our busiest at the moment but almost all of the mods are happy to help out there. Some of the smaller forums don't have a big moderator presence but then these areas require less moderation. Really as long as you're active in the gaming sections I think that's sufficient (or put another way, it is very unlikely that we'd consider someone who spends most of their time in CD).

Being active at sparse times will grab our attention, which generally means the further you are from the Eastern Time zone (which has Bethesda and the most mod representatives) the better. However while this may make a member more attractive as a candidate it's more of a bonus than anything else.

He does, but presumably from us and not you ;)

Funny enough I suggested we have another of these about a week or two ago.

Whats up with these Quakecon moderating members that I keep seeing? How did they get appointed? Some of them have little to no post count at all.

Can they moderate in the other sections?

Have any moderators ever gone "rogue", and just started trolling before they left the forums?

There are a lot of chores associated with moderating, it's hard to feel powerful when you're doing chores. :)

wats u're thots on bad speeling. and grammer. and puntuation. wen dos it get so bad dat u feel a need to edit a post or lok a thred.

I've never felt the need to edit a post for bad grammar or whatnot, but then I'm mildly dyslexic and have plenty of typos of my own. I do, however, absolutely hate subject titles in all caps - and those I'll edit down (as the rules ask that people not do this).

Why?

Babes.

Do you sometimes wish you were still just a member?

No, but I do enjoy being able to participate in other forums as a plain and simple member.

Can they moderate in the other sections?

They moderated the old QuakeCon forums, so they were brought over here when the forums themselves were moved. They don't have moderating privileges outside of the QuakeCon section.

They're a fun bunch. :)

They're also not the first mods to be added with negligible post counts. Blith_Erring_Idio had about a dozen posts when we was made a mod (a general mod at that) but he had a long working relationship with a number of Bethesda admin. I was actually a bit uncomfortable about his lack of presence here but he was readily accepted and was a great moderator.

Nope.

Sometimes it's busy and hard to keep up but it's not difficult. Just time consuming. Most of the times I find it fun. I generally find something that makes me laugh a bit everyday here.

Not needed. The fun and occasional laughter is the best medicine. ;)

wats u're thots on bad speeling. and grammer. and puntuation. wen dos it get so bad dat u feel a need to edit a post or lok a thred.

(Frankly, I don't understand how people even manage to do it. It's far too time-consuming for me to spell anything deliberately poorly!)

Since I've never been able to spell and my grammar is not so good either at this point, I don't mind seeing others make mistakes. Some don't speak English as their first language and thus make mistakes. Some folks are dyslexic and thus make mistakes, some just don't care or are like me and have a life long problem with spelling. I was part of a group long ago who were not taught phonics but rather taught to read by sight. It requires you memorize ever word you ever write. After a few years the "experiment" was dropped from the schools that were testing it and most of us who were part of that "experiment" grew into very horrible spellers.

So, I don't judge folks for such.

Do you sometimes wish you were still just a member?

Sometimes. I used to come in on Sundays and remain invisible just so I could lurk about without getting messages and requests. We can't sign in that way any longer with this forum version so,

QakeCon forums were hacked and lost their forum. We brought them here to give them a home and brought on their moderators as well. I think we got three of their moderators. At this time they only moderate that section of the forum.

A quick reminder people, it's not appropriate to discuss warning levels on the forums. If you have questions like this you can review the forum rules or PM a moderator, but discussions of this nature are not allowed.

Do you guys receive any sort of compensation for what you do? It seems like the worst thing to me to work and receive nothing for it.

Not receiving compensation is sort of inherent in being a volunteer. :)

We do get free copies of all of the games covered here. We'll also occasionally get press swag, which is very very awesome.

I believe they get free stuff. Like $150 per year. I recall one of them saying that they had that awesome NCR press shirt, I'm still jealous.

Are there rules in the moderator forums? Do any rules apply to you guys? Or do you guys have a "Unofficial Political / Religious Discussion Thread", a "What song are you listening to?", a "The Unofficial VS Thread" a "The Unofficial Game Thread" and other threads of the like?

I'd be willing to bet that since the moderators are some of the best adherents to the rules of the forum, they'd also be some of the least likely to break said rules even in private conversations.
