AVP discussion #2

Has anybody figured out what the two doodads at either end of the level are supposed to do? There's one by the smartgun and another at the opposite end of the level in the room with the large ramp. From what I can tell only the Predator can hack them, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. The Predator uses it's wristocomputer to disable it, and the Alien can bite it and break it. At first I thought it turned off the lights but that's not it.

I think it's supposed to recharge the predator's power.

That's what I was thinking. But when I was an Alien and I destroyed it, a marine came along and fixed it somehow.

Then I guess the Marine can destroy it by shooting it? I forgot to try that out.

11 kills as an alien, and the winner. Kill streak 6. Lucky I did so well in such a lag infested game, but that's what I get for playing this late. Some predator was trying to single me out for one on one combat. He got me three times in a row before I started to dominate him. Then he started sprinting away like a [censored]. Hahaha, newb. You don't outrun an alien.

I managed to get 8 of my mates in a game.

3 Marines
4 Aliens
1 Predator

GREAT FUN!

Basically we didn't species kill each other and held out in the rooms next to the corridors as the marines. I ran to get the smart gun and was executed by a predator. Scary as [censored] with the long pause while it looks at you before ripping out your spine :nope:

I try to get behind enemies then lightening speed charge them and hit e for a kill. Works wonders as an Alien. Doesn't seem like the Predator can run fast enough to do this often.

Best moment ever. I sped into a room at ground floor with a marine in it. It was brightly lit. He went behind some small fork lift or another, and I hid behind some crates. Well he must have picked me up on the edge of his motion tracker. He must have thought me a predator because he starts shooting out into the entrance of the hallway. Satisfied he bought himself some time he started to sprint. I sat motionless watching him. When he went by me I snuck up behind him and did that oh so scary alien mouth kill thing. I could practically hear him screaming OH SHIIIT into his mic. hahahahahah

Did a round of each. 1st impressions:

Marine: Aiming felt off. Like, 20 rounds at a target, maybe 5-10 would hit. Ended up getting 1 kill at the end because I found and Alien killing a Predator in the grab attack and took advantage. Most of the time, I just got punched to death or stabbed from behind.

Alien: HORRIBLY disorienting at first. Never really got used to it. I had auto-transition on which may have been the cause. Jumping around was fun and falling down behind someone to kill them was nice. Got 7 or 8 kills. That round, it mostly ended up being conga lines of grab kills.

Predator: Being invisible was fun. The "super jump" wasn't very super. It felt like it was limited to edges and most of the time it was more effective to run around or drop down instead of jump. I had one satisfying kill where I stood in a corner cloaked and a Marine backed into me. A grab death ensued and left me smiling. I also was able to find a decent right click->left click combo to take care of Aliens.

Overall: Definitely felt like it's suffering from consolitis. The auto-lock seemed to hinder the melee fights. One ended up being just us running in circles (felt very Halo-ish). Also, the graphics seemed very sub-par. I was on Very High at first and then High (a little better of a performance). The walls seemed flat and bland. The arms/guns of the Marine looked PS2 like. The death animations of the grabs are cool. It seemed like I was having a lag issue or something. My running seemed stuttery and all my actions seemed just a little off. I turned off VSync and that helped, but I couldn't quite get my running to smooth out. Also, as the Marine, I could see acid through walls and stuff. Not sure if that's by design or just a graphical glitch, but I thought I should mention it.

I'll try it again this weekend during a more popular east coast time (not a lot of people on at 2:30am haha) and see how that goes. Definitely not on my "must buy" list, though.

I have had no lag problems, other than this game here. Playing with people in England tends to do that though. It seems fun, but I'm not sure if it's so much fun I could justify buying it. I have to wait and see how the rest of the game handles. There is after all always Bad Company 2 or Awakenings vieing for my attention.

Hmm, the host must've just been a ways away. Whenever anybody tried to talk during the game, the sound stuttered really badly.

I gotta say Predator>Alien>Marine.

Just from my 30 minutes of playing.

It really depends on who get's the first strike in regards to Predator vs Alien. The predator hurts way more, but if I can stun him he is pretty much doomed. All comes down to who can strike the fastest. Head on it is usually a death sentence. The crappier players can be fooled by a speed charge and a whack. Anyone with skill has to be hit from behind. All of this as an Alien fighting a Predator.

Yeah, I can see where the Alien would have the speed advantage. It seemed like I was able to hit right click at a good enough distance that as I closed it and auto-lock took over, I'd hit them and stun 'em, then left click real quick to finish them off.

Then some guy would be standing behind me, grab me, and kill me.

Seriously. My second game, I swear I saw 4 people die in a row because of this.

Guy 2 grabs Guy 1. Guy 3 runs behind Guy 2. Guy 2 kills Guy 1. Guy 3 grabs Guy 2. Guy 4 runs behind Guy 3. Guy 3 kills Guy 2. Guy 4 grabs Guy 3. Guy 5 runs behind Guy 4. Guy 4 kills Guy 3...etc.

Like I said, approaching a skilled Predator head on is asking for trouble. Most of the time they have wrist blades, disengage and hit him again when he least expects it.

Predators hunt Humans
Aliens hunt Predators
Humans Just die

:P

What I mean to say is, that it is easier for a Predator to hunt a human than it is an alien. Aka stalking and keeping hidden while following them for a good kill. Where as aliens are good at doing this to a Predator because of their speed. Then humans just die. :P
That is why I love coming across Predators. I know they are going to be in human vision mode a good chunk of the time on servers with low alien population. It's an easy process to get behind the slow beasts and slay them. :P

Humans are easy to kill either way. Charge and and zig zag, or sneak attack. Poor bastards get eaten left and right. Even when two of them decide to work together I can hit and run fast enough to kill one of them and then go recover. Then sneak back in to finish the last svcker off.

At least Predators are a threat, what with their complete melee combat ass kicking ability if they land a hit.

Just came down from a few good games. Dominated one as a Marine. Maybe my initial assessment of them was in error, or maybe I was just lucky. The motion detector is still my favourite gadget in the game.

Anyway, I was playing some 1v1 (yeah, you have trouble finding servers, I have trouble finding populated ones) Pred vs. Alien. I'll admit he was good, I didn't really stand a chance. Out of nowhere though this guy was breaking my grabs. I didn't even know that was possible, let alone what caused it.

I had a tough couple matches earlier. me as predator, another predator, 4 aliens and 2 marines. The other Predator was an amazing player. I was in the big room on those overhang things where you can pick up the mines... I saw him down below about to recharge, fired my disc at him and missed, he recloaked and i was just about to fire again when i couldn't see him cloaked... i turned to my left and he right there, i hit him once but then he hit me and then proceed to jump behind me and kick the crap out of me.

Another match i had, i was on the same overhanging bit, i picked up the mines and looked down to see an alien and a predator whacking eachother... I threw a mine down onto them and before they even knew what was what they had both blown up.

Just played 2 matches, one as an alien and the other one as a predator. Came second in both with 13 kills. I don't know what problem people have with the alien, but I can kill anything with it very quickly.

I like it, and I'll get the full version when it's released. I just don't want to play as a marine. One of the reasons I don't play CoD and MW is because I don't like straight up shooting games, they're boring. Playing as an alien or a pred is different though.

EDIT: Although alien vs a predator, the predator wins 90% of the time from what I'm seeing. A pred is too good.

Also, am I right in that an alien's controls is just Q for sprint, spacebar to grab onto things, and left/right click to attack? R makes him roar, useless. I don't know why I can't leap onto my enemies. For example I'm on the ceiling and there's someone under me. That should be a sure win situation for the alien, but I can never get my alien to leap onto him and finish him off.

I just played a couple of games there as the Predator and I still can't get used to it. I keep getting my ass whooped, although I think for part of the time that was down to connection issues. The Predator is pretty badass when you start picking up extra equipment. I played a game as the marine afterwards and everyone but a Predator player left, and I beat him. I liked using the smartgun, it was pretty cool, although it severely limits mobility.

I'm getting into games after a couple of seconds now. But there are loads of connectivity issues, and I'm quite sure they're not from my end.

To whoever said the shotgun is useless, you're wrong. :P It's very good. Use the alternate fire one-on-one, if you aim correctly it should kill them in one shot.

Now I can connect to game in few seconds :)

So far I've played only as Alien. The grab ability is just great! and the first person animations are well done.

Cool game, but the controls feel very weird to me. You can't crouch, and attacks feel incredibly slow. Not the best graphics, but atleast most people should be able to run it then. I think it's good, but I hope the attacks will be faster in the final version. :goodjob: Overall good game I'd say. :foodndrink:
