Been playing for few hours - the PC keyscontrols are really

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 4:55 pm

I'm a fair and balanced bloke, and i love Bethesda, and this game looks amazing and I have a feeling it will be great..... But obviously not everything will be good and I can tell you right now the PC interface and keyboard mapping are really, really bad. Bethesda.... I feel slightly hurt that you haven't put even some care into the PC controls, it's clearly thrown together without any sense or logic.

Where to begin. It's a gigantic mess...

Firstly... You have to arbitrarily jump between keys, mouse, and other keys to do something, nothing is intuitive.

you hit enter to select something, and logically you think you'd hit enter again to confirm it, just like in their previous games, yes? No. Without ANY indicationn, you have to move your hand to hit Y for yes or N for No, Or drag your mouse across the screen to click your selection. That might not sound jarring or wrong but as soon as you play it you will understand.... You are constantly having to move around, perform hand gymnastics just for something as simple as confirming something........ from one side of the screen to the other just to hit yes. It's terrible. I have a 27" screen and I am spending waaaaaaay too much time having to move a mouse around or fiddle with random keys.

Secondly... You can't change the sensitivity of the Y value for the mouse. I hope that's a glitch, because it's really bad. It takes FOREVER TO look upwards or downwards, whereas left or right is really quick and fast. I haven't bothered opening the .ini yet. There will probably be a solution there

The interface is not at all designed for PCs.... Or for computer monitors with people sitting closer. The same degree of Oblivion hugeness is here.

There are so many other issues...l like navigating the perk trees (it is so sloppy and erratic).

Dont get me wrong - I am happy with this game so far, but the controls for a keyboard and mouse are currently terrible.

I have to rant a little about this, because this is insane. Ive been playing for three hours and though the game looks very fun, everythings going at a snail pace because of the interface and I feel like Im playing on a console :(

The worst offenses are:

- No more direct hotkeys, everything must go through the console's "Favorite menu" which means I need to pause the game and go into a menu just to switch weapons or spells and that's very much unacceptable in a PC game.
- The mouse doesn't work to click on many things, you have to navigate menus with arrows on your keyboard, slowing down gameplay once again to console level.

Absolutely no effort has been made to make sure the game could benefit from a computer's superior control. Whilst we can mod in hotkeys in due time, it's entirely possible the menus will never be fixable.

Epic fail, Bethesda. :sadvaultboy:

The PC interface is generally fine. I was bummed out too at first until I learned to use the WASD keys for menu navigation and E and R for getting & dropping. It's super easy and quick and MUCH better than the nasty mouse only interface in Oblivion.

Did you custom map your mouse keys?

I played Oblivion on PC before Xbox 360 and for some reason felt the interfaces were more for PC.

Then again, I might be a moron.

Your the 2nd person to post a thread on this. Bethesda screwed us PC people over on the UI as I knew they would cuz Skyrim was made for the xbox.

Loyalty to PC fans is not looking so good. >.<

Bah!

Some things hitting enter works as "OK", and yet in other places hitting enter SHOULD mean ok yet it doesn't.

THIS IS SO UNINTUITIVE.

They have literally just ported the console interface and slapped random keys to the buttons. Your fingers have to go all over the place just to do anything. It's atrocious.

I'm sad Bethesda. And hurt.

You can. Bring up the favorites menu using Q and then hit a # to bind it to that hotkey. Easy peasy. And do try using WASD for menu navigation.

So you can't click on inventory items at all? You have to use arrow keys and the Enter key to select?

Make a mod or wait for one, i can guarantee you that one will come out in the next week if it's as bad as you say it is (still don't have the game).

You can. They keyboard just works 100x better.

I use WASD for navigation, and E for selecting (r drops). And as I posted above, hotkeying off of the favorites menu (Q) works.

There have been quite a few threads on lots of forums! The PC interface is terrible. Bethesda have 100% neglected us here. Nothing is intuitive or logical.

Cant you just re map everyhing to your preferance??? isnt Pc gaming for Skyrim all about customizing the game to your comfort. isnt that why you have a re mapping setting and a modding community. I beleve your getting mad at Bethesda for something you can easily fix... correct me if im wrong.

You need to delve into the options menus a bit more. According to a dev post on these forums, you can hotkey specific items just as you could in Morrowind and Oblivion. You can also hotkey different menu screens, removing the need for the compass menu.
