Can we all just agree that mods won't come to consoles

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 4:55 pm

There is no reason to believe mods are unable to be run on the 360 or the PS3. Mods like high res texture packs are obviously not going to happen, but mods that use existing content to create new houses, scripts, weapons, towns, etc are definitely possible (used some on my PS3 back in the jailbreak days with F:NV). Heck I was actually building a house mod on the PC and testing it on the PS3 just to see if my scripts and modified weapons worked and everything did (never finished the mod though since I updated my PS3, jailbreak just wasn't worth the loss of PSN).

Check this video out about Infamous 2's user downloadable content built via its level editor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zp5TUrq_Bg
In that video you see a basic example of what it lets all PS3 users do with Infamous 2: place NPC's, use scripts, activators, static objects, etc. Any user can play these user created levels and distribute them. User created contented is also supported for other PS3 games like LittleBigPlanet and Soccom 4. Not sure about 360 since I don't own one :/

I imagine Sony would have an issue with Bethesda creating a store where the PC user mods are published to the console, but I don't see Sony/Microsoft having a problem with a stripped down CK that Bethesda could implement in the console version of the game. Obviously it would be stripped down and significantly reworked so console users would be able to use it with their controller, but I definitely think something like this would be possible, although I don't think Bethesda would waste their time implementing something like this for Skyrim currently.

I'd also like to point out that Sony has worked with Valve on Steam integration. Portal 2 can be bought through Steam and be played on the PC and PS3 as long as your Steam account and PSN ID are linked. Since Bethesda has put in place a way for mods to be distributed through Steam, I think its *slightly* (very slightly) possible they could work something out with Sony. This could mean all texture modifications are sorted out, but other user created content can be used. Perhaps even a subsection of tried and tested content for console owners (although Valve said not to expect Steam integration with the 360 in reference to Portal 2 even though it was technically possible).

If any console WOULD do it. I agree, it would be Sony. They seem a tiny bit less strict.

As an Xbox user, if PS3 got it, I think 360 users would b**** and moan til something was done. I mean 2/3 platforms would be ridiculous. Even if they just allowed us to download PC user's KC creations I would cry with joy.

If ps3 were to do it then Microsoft would almost be forced to as well. Or vice versa. They would lose major sales of one platform decided to include mods and the other didn't

This is an interesting thing. Skyrim sold better on the 360 so I don't see why Bethesda would exclude them (and they seem buddy buddy with Microsoft), but if they got permission from Sony I don't see why they wouldn't do it for them either release it for them as soon as possible. However, like Tinz3455 above me said, if Sony allowed for it and Bethesda actually made it available, Microsoft would definitely follow suit as it would be a staple for all future ES games (and Fallout games most likely).

to be honest i dont see why Bethesda doesnt work in conjunction with the top mod creators to create 360 versions as Free/Cheap paid (but OFFICIAL) dlc for consoles, thats what MC 360 is working on and..thats an arcade title, PLUS some india games have user created texture packs which the implemented after users submited into a contest, its somthing they could look into but microsoft isnt exactly the
best company to break ground on the gaming frontier content wise...sure they have a few apps that others dont have but for gaming what they have has been done before.

but if anyone can convince microsoft its Bethesda the popularity of their titles are just above and beyond anything that even microsoft could risk losing over somthing like Player created(But bethesda approved) Mods/DLC

Yes and no, it depends on the implementation, as is i know a few people who modded Oblivion 360 (breaks microsofts TOS but they can do it) but you would see people with low spec PC's who modded lets say, oblivion(and possibly dont buy skyrim because of System reqs and lack of 360 mod support) buying it because they have a 360 which doesnt need upgrades for every new game,

i know people that have to upgrade at least TWICE a year to play games on MAX Settings, shelling out $600+ a year, and about $2000 every other year on a new PC which then needs more upgrades the next year

i bought my 360 to AVOID the cost of pc upgrades, and im glad i did, i can run any game for the 360 without worry of RAM or a Video card or OS or anything like that, you cant deny that the 360 is more cost effective, on top of that most PC games are $50 and Console 60$ for new releases, meaning this would INCREASE their profit's plus the influx of people wanting to play a legaly moddable Console game... i think it would make them money easily, its up to them and i wont go saying (I WONT BUY ANOTHER BETHESDA GAME WITHOUT CONSOLE MOD SUPPORT) because the fact is i will buy with or without mod support, the big difference for me is that
Skyrim i have roughly 800+ Hrs No Mods on 360 but i look at oblivion, maybe 5000+? (i played.. daily for a year(exlude maybe a week when i wasnt around a PC) Fallout 3..dont even get me started... and Fallout NV...still going maybe in the 8k range (it may be less fun that FO3 but i like the western style...and shooting geckos with Inc. Missiles :D

It is not very possible at all? Literally not in the slightest. Consoles run graphically on medium settings perhaps slightly higher. 6 year old hardware mods would fry these systems. How would creation kit even work. Sony and Microsoft would never ever agree to it. I am trying to make people stop putting up threads saying "will mods come to console" when we all know that the won't. It's not just a guess there about a 5% chance it will come to console next generation let alone this.

As much as I'd love to see Console Commands on the Consoles, I have to agree with OP. It will never happen with this gen of consoles.

Period.

It depends on the Type of mod, how much content is added ETC, but part of this is correct, this generation of consoles are rocks compared to the next gen.

rumors of the 720 dashboard being booted up on 360 hardware = bye bye 360(fried it) showing a large power difference. but at the same time if you look at even official DLC, those are basicly mods, just created by bethesda instead of some guy posting a file he created in his spare time on a website that isnt run by bethesda.

all they would need is to Limit mods to within the consoles limits, honestly i run FO:NV on my PC On Highest, with like 20+ Mods, and my rig is Single Core, 2GB Memory with a 512MB PCIExp Vid card.. most people would say impossible, but with proper program changes, running game booster,ASC,twice weekly defrag, its on 150MB drive, a fan pointed in and an overclocked processor Via a program i found, and im running as smooth as if it was Vanilla NV on Lowest,

all it takes it proper allocation of available resources to allow (even if slight) modding maybe allowing reskins, small packs,Vanilla quest packs, etc

Exactly! Quite a few veteran modders have come out with actual mission packs and such, containing well rounded dungeons and areas to explore. Bethesda should be looking into high ranked, well rounded mission/dungeon packs created by top of the line modders.

Skyrim Nexus was designed to bring all modders into one community. This community would then let incredible mods to the surface and let the weak drown/get critiques to improve. If Bethesda took the top of the line KC created areas and possibly well developed mods, this game could be taken to a whole new level. Dungeon packs such as Wheeze's Dungeon Pack 1 should be included into the game. Packs like these have hours of work put into them and are completely original.

This has been said, but I agree that this chunk of info is pretty ground breaking. I mean they said it themselves that it's possible. I personally would be willing to wait for them to pput out a couple DLC packages before opening up downloadable content from player developers. I understand that DLCs generate a substantial amount of revenue, and honestly I'd probably buy them all. Just like I did with Fallout 3.

I play Minecraft via my laptop (Unfortunately I feel that my laptop could not handle Skyrim and all the epicness it possesses, hence why I bought the 360 version). Just to discuss some acceptable User made areas. a User named Crgobi created a dwemer ruins castle that players can buy. It has to be one of the most beautiful creations I havce ever layed my eyes on .

As people have pointed out, it's the types of mods that are the key thing. Creating new weapons and armour for example requires things like photoshop, gimp, blender, all that model editing stuff. None of that is likely to come to consoles soon.

However, the Creation kit is self-contained (it already has all of the bits it needs), and Bethesda made, so some kind of console adaptation where a person could just mess around with the assets Skyrim already has (this is the vast majority of mods, and people are creating all kinds of new things) is definitely possible (unless there's some kind of operating system malarkey that I'm unaware of). The recent Steam workshop integration seems like it would be handy for this too. If Valve made a deal with one or more of the console manufacturers (the more the merrier), or if it turned out the rumours of a Valve-made console were true, you'd have an effective delivery system for people to download mods from. That's looking further ahead, but I think that's where we're going, even if it isn't during the current console generation.

The problem with this is that it makes modding into a competition. If Bethesda takes an active role in picking certain modders to release their content then people will start making mods no longer for fun, but for the sole idea of getting chosen to release their mods for possible monetary gain (which would be a change to the current TOS regarding mods).

Period? Really? Besides the fact that Bethesda has officially said Skyrim mods work on consoles I have created and tested mods for Fallout New Vegas on the PS3. It is completely possible for consoles just as its possible for low end computers that can run Skyrim. To say next gen consoles are required is being naive or ignorant (unless your referring to texture packs in which I would obviously agree with you, but you did say console commands).

Not really possible, no.

The Creation Kit is very much a Windows-centric piece of software, and use a lot of API functions not available on the consoles. To port it to a console would be a huge undertaking. Also, the main reason they made CK was to build the game with it, not to give it to fans which is just an added bonus, so to build an editor they won't use themselves is just a waste of resources. Not to mention the CK use quite a lot more RAM than the main game as well, and the game is already pushing the RAM limits of the consoles.

The "Competition" would be judged VIA Poll's ETC Compatibility tests would be done PRIOR to Poll, as well as a min. set of REQ (hours)(characters)(entitys) ETC anyways i gotta go be back when im awake

I don't think that would be good either. Although the idea of competition sounds good on paper, it will not be beneficial for the Modding scene. Mods have always been free (required via the TOS) and about having fun. Modders make the mods they do because they like playing around and giving to the people. If this proposed idea was to come true modding would no longer be about having fun, but about making the best mod so money could be obtained. This would affect those trying to get into the Modding scene since their work wouldn't be as seen and why would someone download a new persons mod when you have all these really good modders trying to outdo one another? Besides, paid mods completely goes against what Bethesda intended when they started releasing their modding tools.
