Can we all just agree that mods won't come to consoles

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:34 pm

The Creation Kit is very much a Windows-centric piece of software, and use a lot of API functions not available on the consoles. To port it to a console would be a huge undertaking.
That would be the malarkey I mentioned. I'd imagine there are similarities between the design of the Xbox's operating system and Windows though, no? Additionally as I kind of got to at the end, I was attempting to express that this would be more suited to the next console generation, if unsuccessfully (there are even some rumours flying around that the next Xbox will be using Windows 8 as it's base operating system, very sketchy rumours though they may be).

Also, the main reason they made CK was to build the game with it, not to give it to fans which is just an added bonus, so to build an editor they won't use themselves is just a waste of resources.
I'm sure some would argue against that point. What defines a 'waste' of resources? It would boost sales for sure, and is that not the point?

The problem with this is that it makes modding into a competition. If Bethesda takes an active role in picking certain modders to release their content then people will start making mods no longer for fun, but for the sole idea of getting chosen to release their mods for possible monetary gain (which would be a change to the current TOS regarding mods).

Period? Really? Besides the fact that Bethesda has officially said Skyrim mods work on consoles I have created and tested mods for Fallout New Vegas on the PS3. It is completely possible for consoles just as its possible for low end computers that can run Skyrim. To say next gen consoles are required is being naive or ignorant (unless your referring to texture packs in which I would obviously agree with you, but you did say console commands).
But that is also good no? Modders getting the chance to work hand in hand with Bethesda. I personally would love to see competition between modders to give their best output of mods and packs, and maybe someday a few of them will be inducted into the ranks of Bethesda's content developers :)

No I haven't. But I would like to have more modio experiences for other modders! Would be great ^^ but for now, I'd just like their packs in console games :P

If you watch the interview about dawngaurd at E3, Todd mentions that they are still trying to work it out, it is foolish to think that it is likely to happen, but it is possible.

Then shouldn't we all be pushing for it? I mean so far Bethesda has done one hell of a job listening to its players. Dragonbone weapons, crossbows, maybe in a couple updates we could see the add-ons sections grow.

Even if the next gen consoles could run the CK entirely, Bethesda would still need to modify it. Its designed for computers and would be terribly difficult to create anything with it if it was on a console. so Bethesda would definitely need to make it more usable for console users (a specific stripped down version). I wouldn't be surprised about the Windows 8 base either. I'm pretty sure the next generation of Windows Phones (WP8) will be transitioning to a Windows 8 base/kernel for cross compatibility app wise.

I'm sure some would argue against that point. What defines a 'waste' of resources? It would boost sales for sure, and is that not the point?

It would most certainly boost sales and be a major selling point.

Competition is good in some areas, but I don't think modding is one of those areas. Modding is currently a hobby for most of these modders. Once you introduce the option of payment it no longer becomes a hobby you dabble with for fun. The fun of modding is stripped away and modders only work for the chance to get money. What happens if a mod is chosen? Does it cost money for just consoles or PCs as well? I think recognition is the most motivating factor for modding and the Nexus already does a great job with that, which brings me to my next point. If something like this were to take place it would almost certainly be required for the mod to be uploaded to the Steam Workshop. The Nexus would see a huge drop in users most likely since all the good mods would be going to the workshop for the chance to become a purchasable mod.

I'm not sure what to make of this... but the 1.6.9 patch issued for the Xbox Dawnguard beta supposedly adds an "add-on" menu to the startup screen. Draw your own conclusions.

Just buy a gaming pc save up 100 euro a month if you can you could get a gaming pc within a year and have all the mods you want. I think everyone will agree with me, too complicated not to mention Sony and Microsoft won't agree to it. Sad to say but true
 And everything that Coby said.

Yes. For Bethesda especially.

Ok, I have read this whole bloody thread and I'm not sure whether to hope for mods or no. Judging from what I read, it seems that people choose to believe that mods won't come to Console mainly to block out the disappointment should it never happen. Todd himself said it could happen and if they tested it out on Console then it can work!! Only a slight chance of course but a chance nonetheless that it could happen. I do agree with everything Elrick said, we should be pushing bethesda (not too harshly) to bring mods to console. Not just them, but microsoft and Sony as well. Atleast post on their forums if they have any and show them that the people want mods to come to 360 or next-gen consoles. Show them that we want mods on console and they will truly take effect!

As for competition for modders, the whole point of existing in today's world is to make money and live a good life. Having Bethesda choosing good mods to put on 360 and ps3 and having to buy for them would actually be more beneficial because then it would force modders to come out with way cooler and better mods and block out the crappy, [censored] mods. I agree I would be all over these good mods if they decided to release them for 360 I mean everybody would. Its a huge sale opportunity that these companies are passing up just for a difference of opinion between consoles and pc's.

As a possible solution, Bethesda could have a mod team of their own and coming out with these mods or just simply choosing the best mods and making cool mod-expansion packs for 360 for like 60 bucks or something and every single console fan out there would pay it. I do truly hope that Todd won't give up and say " Ok we are just going to give up on getting mods out there" I mean I am not going to waste money on a pc and pc version Skyrim just so I can have mods. I have been playing too long with my character on 360 and I ain't going to just leave that behind for stupid mods.

Lastly, for all those who don't care about mods. Don't tell me you wouldn't want something like this in your 360 gaming console.

It's not unfair, it's just the nature of the beast. PCs tend to cost a lot more but can do a lot more too (Yes you can build a PC that costs less than a console and performance just as well, but who wants that?) I mean, I don't go off on a target when I don't get access to 360 exclusives like the beta or earlier patches, or earlier content.

definitely impossible as of right now
hardware just cant compare to a pc as of now, and the console teams get too sixually exited with regulations and licensing restrictions to allow that much freedom
i can see them possibly coming to the next gens, but ppl whining about how they cant get mods on their 360's and ps3's need to go svck an exhaust pipe
it's aggravating beyond words, and im a freaking console user

I've gotten into the Test Room on consoles before. I'm unsure about full fledged mods. I had my cousin mod a Cloud Saves game on my profile, I'll upload a video if ya want.

Everything is possible to varying degrees.

I highly doubt mods will come to consoles any time soon but I'm not about to shoot myself in the foot by claiming an absolute.
