But WHY. Why do consoles need to be closed environments? It's ridiculous! I mean now I'm tempted to buy Skyrim for the PC just so I can play on the creation kit!
Because consoles are not meant to be cheap PC's; they are game appliances. Ie: toss away and get a new one. As for the Xbox.........The OS is customized, lacking a =lot= of the windows API that is in common use. The GPU uses only part of DX-9. Most of the system tools are deliberately removed, as you have no OS install disk to reinstall if you bollix what's there. All you can do if you break it is either toss it and buy a new one, or mail it back and hope they fix it for less than that new one would cost. And they don't like people to do that; remember the frothing fits M$ threw when the Linux community demonstrated how you -could- turn the original box into a Linux box? Not much of one, but one good enough to serve as a render node.
And right now, consoles are not that economical. I'm currently assembling the parts for a new computer for my wife. I'm using the AMD A6 APU (quad core CPU and DX-11 GPU on the same die), 8gigs of DDR-3 ram, and a Gigabyte A75M-D2H motherboard. Those 3 components cost a total of $210, including shipping. By the time I'm finished, the new system, case and all, will be about $500. If I recycled case and DVD drive yet again, it would be about $350. This system has a built in HDMI port, so it can be plugged into any widescreen TV. Has enough horsepower to run Skyrim with better than medium settings. And if she decides, can accept a Radeon 6000 series video card for a Crossfire setup (I was kinda surprised that the APU would slot into that architecture, but it apparently does).
Ghu only knows what the '720' or whatever they call it will cost, but I can assure you it won't be a couple of hundred bucks......
