Could the game advlt up a bit?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:42 am

The only voice I can't stand is Marcus Fenix from gears of war running around.. "BATTLE-BORN OR GREY-MANE?!" "Ew, Marcus Fenix? Shouldn't you be on Sera, and you dyed your hair?!" "I SAID BATTLE-BORN OR GREY-MANE?!!!?!" "Ugh, [censored] off."

*walks around for 10 minutes before ending up in the companions guild hall*

"Skjor says I have Ysgramors strength, and my brother has his smarts."

*facepalm*

Game is rated 15, game is made in a way so that slow people, the young and the stupid can understand.

I am not talking about the lack of six, violence and naughty words here (although more of that would have suited the game) But instead..

How every single puzzle was designed for a four year old and added absolutely nothing good to the game. I found the poorly designed inventory to be more of a problem

How the lore added to the game was poor and just excused the creation of generic fantasy dragons who didn't even use the shouts to make their fire. I don't even know why there are dwemer cities in skyrim and i think it's because bethesda could not be bothered to think of something new to fight. I am not even sure if they should be called "dwemer" perhaps "dwarves" would fit them better with their stone architecture and all.

The designs of armour and weapons and creatures. Note how all the weapons (especially swords) are oversized for no decent reason whilst there are no unique looking animals or monsters whatsoever that anyone older than ten would accept in a fantasy realm. The powers of smithing was probably thought up by five year olds who wanted to make "epic swords"

Every second an npc will spurt their occupation at you. As if it was hard to remember that the black woman at whiterun's gate banging into an anvil was a smith.. Plus why is she telling me that graymane is better than her and she is terrible CONSTANTLY? That can't be good for business can it? Imagine of Burger king continuously announced their inferiority to McDonald's .

There are some npcs that are rather powerful emotionally (ulfric, jarl balgruff - the stormcloak storyline is superior to the imperial one in ever aspect) and then there are some well played characters (Most of the less sane,Khajit, esbern, tulius, hardvar, tolfdir some of the daedric princes, parthanax. i was told the greybeards rip you apart if you side with the blades) and the completely awful (every single person that i have not mentioned, I probably met every single npc in my 178 hours)

But i probably wouldn't have brought this issue up if Npc's kept their stupid comments to themselves!
Then there are some npcs that i just want to kill for being so.. bad and unique.. Delvin, carliah, maven, lucien, delphine, mercer, the unimportant companions, sheogorath, half of the dark brotherhood.. ugh.. so STUPID! Nothing says "i am a bad person" more in a Bethesda game than the voice they use and it really simplifies characters to the point of them being so unrelatable that you just want to shoot them. A five year old might need the "evil voice help" to tell if a character is "evil" or not but the game happens to be rated 15 and anyone who is over 15 realy does not (unless they suffer from a mental illness, in that case they should not be playing such games)

I want a deep rpg that does not assume that i am five.

1. If you want deep and complicated puzzles, go play a different game, maybe Tomb Raider?

2. You clearly know very little about the TES lore, if you did you'd know that Dwemer aren't actually dwarves, they're a species of Elves. They were named 'Dwarves' by giants, and it's what most of the ignorant populace on Tamriel refers to them as.

3. Dragons do infact shout to breath fire, along with their other magickal attacks. Ever heard of 'Yol Toor Shul?'

4. How are the swords oversized? They look fine to me.

5. If you want freaky-looking mosnters, you should go play Morrowind.

6. While this could've been executed better, Bethesda aren't a multi-billion dollar game company like EA or Activision, they don't have the budget to hire a plethora of well-known voice actors and give every NPC alot of depth. If I directed it, I would've made it so that NPC aknowledge you're accomplishments a little more, and once they've spewed their 'life story' at you a couple times, they simply reply to you with a 'Hmmm?' or 'Yes?' more often. Perfect example, when you're helping Alvor in Riverwood around his forge and have to return to him several times. Yes I know you can forge me an Warhammer that could crush a giant's head like a Walnut, and yes I know you don't like Elven armour or weaponry.

You make a good point on how there's such a dearth on advlt content in an advlt game, but The Elder Scrolls series aren't known for their puzzels, they're known for their character creation, lore, and dynamic world. Everything else you said is just endless gripping.

If you want mind-bending puzzels, play Anmesia; the Dark Descent or something, because you're not going to find it here.

Dead on mate! The advlt game below actually makes you type out your destination, a 5 year old would have difficulty with the spelling and most likely can't type 40+ words per minute at that age.

Fast forward to the 20 second footage, just amazing stuff. Wow! Game for advlts indeed

Well, at least that aspect is consistent with lore...

Mer = Elves

AltMER
DunMER
OrsiMER
DweMER
FalMER

@jack254: I'm also going to add: the Dwemer originated in Morrowind but eventually migrated across all of Tamriel. This subterranean dwelling way of life was not threatening to the rest of their Elven kinsmen who resided on the surface (all of whom the Dwemer mistrusted). So with a few notable exceptions (like when the Ysgramor defeated the Snow Elves and banished them to live underground), Dwemer civilzation was pretty much unaffected by events on the surface. Consequently, the expansion of their subterranean civilization across the Tamriel provinces went largely uncontested. That's why you'll find Dwemer ruins not just in Morrowind, but in places as far as Cyrodil and Skyrim.

On you dwarves comment: I don't know why LOTR, Snow White and the 7 Dwarves and WoW suddenly came to mind when I read this. You're obviously superimposing other fantasy lore elements which you've learned from IRL. Because none of what you implied about the Dwemer's physical stature exists anywhere in TES lore. Check what this wikia has to say about their physical stature under the "Appearance" section in the middle of the page. You can also check out Radac Stungnrhumz who is previously encountered in Morrowind:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dwemer

As final visual proof, compare these 2 training dummies which I oufitted in my basemant. I decorated them with a full set of Dwemer and Elven armor. I recovered the Dwemer armor from a Dwemer ruin. The Elven armor set was thoughtfully donated by a dead Thalmor my battle mage Nord met while travelling on the road.

Skyrim doesn't really have puzzles. A door with three plates for which you can open your inventory to get the answer doesn't really constitute a 'puzzle'.

I can agree on the puzzles, it would of been quite nice to see something very complex that would require an hour or two to understand.

Hell, you do not learn chess in a few minutes & then beat a grandmaster.

I stopped reading here. You obviously aren't up on your TES lore, which is fine, but don't go complaining about the lore then talk about the Dwemer cities and asking for something new to fight, that just makes you sound like the little kids you seems to hate.
The Dwemer ruin are one of the best parts of this game no idea why the OP is complaining there.

Maybe 15 year olds are dumber and stupidier now a days

Would explain the dumbing-down.

Seriously, why does Skyrim need six in it? It's a game, not a stroll through a red-light district. Besides, once the CK comes out, the Beavis and Buttheads of the modding community will be hard at work adding it.

Oblivion only got the mature rating because of "the presence in the PC version of the game of a locked-out art file that, if accessed by using an apparently unauthorized third party tool, allows the user to play the game with topless versions of female characters".

Oh man, that brought back some serious memories. Thanks for that link! I surfed around a bit and ran across this one for Arena. Had a nice map of Tamriel. The game difficulty in Arena makes Daggerfall look like you're playing in Kindergarten  Just trying to ESCAPE that dungeon intro tutorial was like doing a marathon through an infinite number of Oblivion gates butt nekkid!

Haven't played Arena in a millenia. In terms of game play challenge, Arena and Daggerfall really explain my heartburn over just how badly Oblivion and now Skyrim have been "dumbed down". I'm going to install the DOS emulator and hope my Win7 allows me to play.....

Friends of me who normally only play FIFA, CoD, Counter Strike and such games have bought it and enjoyed it.

I guess that was the target audience since the beginning, hence the dumbing down.

A game could auto-generate some of the puzzle answers to be unique to that player's character; that eliminates a walkthrough. :woot:
In Riven for instance (I mentioned it earlier), passwords and sequence puzzles are different every time IIRC.

Seems like you just want to complain, probably more than you want your perfect game. Let me tell you... no major developer is going to give you it. They make their money selling games to the masses, and a huge chunk of that is the teenage market. While they plop a 15 on the cover, most parents (in the US anyway) think their lil' darlin' is mature enough to handle it by 12. You can't write off that market with an over the top "advltness" that you're looking for. Look in the Indi market.

I love this guy, seriously.

@OP
How about YOU advlt up a bit? It's not our fault you overhyped the hell out of this game. Go find a new one and stop complaining.

I just have to add that the Claw puzzles aren't meant to be "puzzles" exactly. They are there to keep the most dangerous Draugr sealed inside their tombs. It wouldn't be feasible to dig a whole new tomb complex every time someone died, so the combination was marked on the claws, letting living humans reopen the tombs if necessary.

Some NPCs actually bring this (combinations on the claws) up.

And dragons have been part of TES lore since the beginning (Redguard even had you fight one). They weren't just thought up for Skyrim.
