Could this be the tommy-gun?

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2011 11:29 am

How do you aim that gun with the clip in the way, and i completely agree I will be very disapointed if this is the unmodified tommy gun.
There's a side-mounted iron sight that allows the wielder to aim past the magazine.

From the hip (only).
*My guess.

no, it showed him aiming down the sights, but the animations for the hands looked terrible. it didnt look as big as the DP28, i cant rightly tell what it is....may not be a real gun at all, just mashups of other guns.

It looked a lot more the American 180 linked a couple of posts back, which being a .22 rimfire could easily be smaller than a 7.62mm DP28.

It's not a Thompson. It's an American 180 Sub-Machine Gun, which uses .22 caliber rounds rather than .45 ACP rounds. The only similarity is that they are both sub-machine guns with wooden stocks and grips. Even a heavily modified Thompson will only have an underbelly drum magazine, not a flat pan magazine like the American 180 or Lewis gun use.

my mistake, ive been out of the gun scene for a few years, thanks for clearing that up comrade.

Well, it's not like Fallout 3 was entirely true to the real versions of the guns.

The Assault Rifle had a smaller caliber than the G3 (5.56 in stead of 7.62), and the Chinese Assault rifle had a smaller caliber as well and looked slightly different from the AK47. (some minor design differences on the look of it)

But I agree that putting the mag on top would totally destroy the classic image of the tommy gun. It's an icon which most people recognize. It would be strange to change that in such a drastic manner. I hope they have one with the the mag down.

The Chinese Assault Rifle was based off of the Type 56 Assault Rifle, a Chinese copy of the AK-47, hence the minor design differences. And as I stated before, it's not the Thompson sub-machine gun, it's an American 180. If there is a Thompson in New Vegas, it will look like a Thompson. Of course to get the iconic gangster Thompson (The "Tommy Gun"), we'll probably need a couple of weapon mods.

My guess is the weapon mod list will be:
-Drum Magazine (switching from a straight clip like the militarized Thompson, the M1A1 Thompson uses)
-Foregrip (adds a handheld grip on the Thompson like on the Tommy Gun)
-Increased rate of fire (faster chamber load or something that makes the bullets fire out faster)

Man I so hope there is a Thompson in-game. D:

Now where's that cigar?

No cigars for any of us thanks to ghoulified Castro. That immortal dictator won't share. D:

And the Owen and American 180 both utilize an upside down style magazine. But the thing you missed was the wooden furniture where the grip is. The Owen has no wooden furnishings on the grip (other than a wooden foregrip attached to the barrel), but the American 180 does have a wooden grip.

I can answer this too. A "Tommy Gun" is just a nickname. But usually refers to a Thompson with a drum and foregrip. So, yes. But remember, the name "Tommy Gun" is just a nickname, not technically another gun.

Yeah, I suppose. Those small differences were easy to miss. It should have made sense. I suppose I figured they would have taken some liberty with the gun anyhow. Oh well.

so then it would prolly make more sense for them to just put a thomson in the game and we can mod it to be a tommy gun. and prolly a fully modded unique tompson named tommy's gun or something like that

The Thompson is the official name of the Tommy Gun. The name "Tommy Gun" is a nickname of the Thompson. Though to avoid confusion most people generally refer to the militarized version of the Thompson as the M1A1 Thompson, and the Tommy Gun as the Thompson with a drum magazine, and a wooden foregrip (that's the wooden handle on the bottom of the gun that gangsters would hold to reduce recoil).

But the Assault Rifle is not a G3, and the Chinese Assault Rifle is not an Ak47, or even based on an Ak47. Also, the G3 can fire 5.56mm and 7.62mm.

I beg to differ.

Here is the Assault Rifle:
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/a/a8/G3ASSAULTRIFLE.png

The Assault Rifle looks the same as a G3 rifle. It uses a G3 magazine.
Here is an early G3 with wooden stock:
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:GSNjEgbbW3cmnM:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/montereyjack/10b8bcd6.jpg&t=1

The HK33 fires 5.56, but the Assault Rifle in Fallout 3 is not that weapon.
Here is an HK 33. It uses a different and longer magazine, because the G3 magazines only take 20 bullets
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:DDAM0tqrY0K4CM:http://world.guns.ru/assault/hk33.jpg&t=1

It would be ridiculous to say they are not based on real weapons. They may not be the same in game, but the game sure as hell borrowed the design.
That's why, when you are promised a Tommy-gun in Fallout New Vegas, we know it'll most probably be based on the real gun, but there could very well be some slight differences from the real one.

Edit: The G3 can not fire 5.56. HK made some weapons for different calibers.
HK G3 = 7.62
HK 33 = 5.56
HK MP5 = 9mm

They are all the same design, but in different scales. An mp5 is like a G3, only in smaller scale. It uses the same mechanics. Trust me, I know how to pick both weapons apart and put them together again.

Im sure its been said numerous times (seen it stated once) but this is no tompson submachine gun (tommy gun). This is in fact more like a lewis gun from WWI and slightly pre WWI. If anyone has seen the movie "Britannic" you see a lewis gun there with a round drum mag mounted atop the gun.

So, no I would have to say this isnt the tompson submachine gun and if its ment to be an "alternative" (which I doubt since this gun has to exsist since WWII happened and this gun was used in WWII) then I am sure alot of people would be extremly pissed off. I do suspect there to be a real tompson submachine gun that we can use, I mean why not if we can knock over the casinos give us the proper tools to do it right.

Internet Helicopter, correct they are based on real world designs for the most part. Just because its called a Chinese Assault rifle doesnt mean its an AK-47. The AK-47 was modified slightly by all different communist satlite countries and got their own name.

Example would be the Polish M-60. It looks pretty much exactly like a AK-47 but yet its not at the same time. Thats just like my M1891/30 rifle was known by a completly different name for the models made in China. It happens but in the end the Chinese Assault rifle is really ment to be the chinese version of the AK-47.
