Could this be the tommy-gun?

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:36 pm

The weapon being shown is the Silenced .22 SMG. It is integrally suppressed. The front grip, as some of you have noted, is using an odd animation. New stances are difficult to add, but the left hand grip is something that can be set per-weapon. We are looking into it.

Awesome a .22 SMG. I am going to make a character for hardcoe Mode that uses .22 pistol, rifle and Machine gun. Will save on ammo weight. Machete for Melee. :D.

Thanks for confirming the in-game name for us. Lots of help for The Vault.

But may I ask what you mean by "the left hand grip is something that can be set per-weapon"? Do you mean that we can switch how our character holds their weapon (either in the left hand or right hand, and in two handed weapons which hand is on the trigger and which hand is on the grip), or something else (and if so what)? 'Cause I'm slightly confused.

Sometimes they use iron sights on the Side of the gun on guns such as the type99 and 96

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/1/10/Type99LMG.jpg/400px-Type99LMG.jpg

I believe having a magazine in this position increases fire rate.

and the Bren gun, having it on the top helps decreases the reload time when in prone (laying down), or firing from the hip with an LMG, I'm not sure if it affects fire rate though.

The Thompson is the official name of the Tommy Gun. The name "Tommy Gun" is a nickname of the Thompson. Though to avoid confusion most people generally refer to the militarized version of the Thompson as the M1A1 Thompson, and the Tommy Gun as the Thompson with a drum magazine, and a wooden foregrip (that's the wooden handle on the bottom of the gun that gangsters would hold to reduce recoil).

Woot, thanks. I love me some Mentats. :D
-gains Mentats addiction- Darn it!

The classic "Tommy Gun" used by gangsters and the police in the '20s was the Model 1921 Thompson Submachinegun. There was a semi-auto, the model 1927, intended for police and civilians. The first "militarized" versions were the Model 1928 and 1928A1 Thompsons, the main difference from the 1921 was the '28s had a lower rate of fire and sling swivels. For WW2, the M-1 and M-1A1 were developed to simplify production. All models could use stick magazines, but the M-1 and M-1A1 were not designed to accept drums as the Army considered them to be more trouble than they were worth based on field reports.

Thank you very much for Confirming this Mister Sawyer, pleasure to be in contact with the Devs of a great game in the making game. the Integral Suppresiion will prove itself to be quite useful for quiet kills in the Desert. I believe one or anothr Dev has confirmed different types of Ammunition will be availabe, i wonder if this weapon would still serve a purpose late into the game, as its .22 does seem rather small compared to a .50...

Thank you for your reply Mister Sawyer.

It's an http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American-180.

It looked a lot more the American 180 linked a couple of posts back, which being a .22 rimfire could easily be smaller than a 7.62mm DP28.

Do you know how cool it is to have developers take and actively work on comments and criticisims made by the fan community?

Thank you, from the board.

Its not a true Tommy gun. Its a Fallout version of the American 180. Still a cool looking weapon, but still not the gangster weapon we all know and love.

It is no doubt modeled after the american 180. Josh said it is a .22 SMG and the american 180 is a .22 SMG.

possibly a highly modified one, with a major reciever adjustment, but the it wouldnt really be a tommy gun anymore. Im really hoping for the classic wooden tommy gun, then to be uprgradeable with a metal frame to look sleek and shiny.

Its doubtful the .22 would serve a purpose at all to be honest. That is unless in the FO universe a .22 has more punch than they do in real life. If thats the case then it might be very useful other than that only thing it would be good for is killing varmits (they dont call it a varmit round for no reason) and I doubt a mutated gecko that is now the size of a dog would be considered a small varmit anymore.

Aside from that .22 is small, that is 0.22" diameter on the bullet or alittle under 1/4 an inch, a .50 is 0.50" or 1/2 an inch but the diameter of the bullet isnt really what gives the weapon the power its the size of the case (length) and how many grains of powder it holds which a .22 doesnt have much of.

But besides real world explinations I just would hope the .22 serves little purpose. Otherwise they should go up to the larger .223 (5.56) military cartridge if they really want a .22 caliber round.
