Was it perfect? Hell no. But tell me of a game that IS perfect.

I don't think anyone is asking for perfection. Just that a sequel should look and feel like one.

you have know way of knowing which would have been better.

and no i am not "bagging" on fallout 3 it was a pretty awesome game, and we should all thank bethesda for saving the franchise.

Yeah, you're right I have "know" way of knowing which could have been better.

It's a very flawed game that wasn't true to a lot of things in the franchise. No one gets on its case for nothing.

As if the originals were flawless.

The second game didn't improve on the first in any way. Both of them had what, five character models, in total? Extremely minimal spoken dialogue, a nonsensical stat system that just stemmed from the fact that the games stunk too much to be allowed to use a proper D20-system, bad visuals and sound for the time, ridiculous story, extremely repetitive gameplay, a staggering number of gamebreaking design flaws, no open world whatsoever, a combat system that boiled down to saving and loading in order to get the desired outcome for every single shot?

See, I can pick on the originals just as much as you can pick on Fallout 3. Heck, most of the things Fallout 3 wasn't true to were things that were rubbish to begin with, and we're better off without them.

You can view the world with whichever rose-tinted spectacles you want, but in my eyes Fallout 1&2 will always be mediocre at best, and crap at worst, while Fallout 3 is, in my book, one of the three best games ever made.

So that is why all the celebrated new features are just that, NEW features, right? Hell, we all know that damage threshold, ammo weight, weapon mods, ammunition subtypes, reputation system, (true) branching dialog, advanced companion controls, special melee attacks, etc. etc. etc. weren't all a part of the series before now, RIGHT? Oh, wait....

:cryvaultboy: Stop pretending Fallout 3 is masterpiece. "Hurr durr stop wearing rose glases". You don't need rose glasses to see that the game is dumbed down tremendously and half the features are cut out. You can figure that out after playing Fallout 2 for 20 minutes.

Celebrated? Nobody apart from the people who were already fans of the first two games have even heard of them.

Hell, we all know that damage threshold,

...one of the more idiotic design features that didn't make any sense whatsoever.

ammo weight,

Who really gives a crap?

weapon mods, ammunition subtypes,

Already have those in Fallout 3, thanks to modding.

reputation system,

Right, so that people automatically keep updated with some kind of global database on what they are supposed to think of you?

Oh, that really makes sense!

(true) branching dialog,

Oh, are we arguing about the true gospel of the Branching Dialogue, our lord and master?

advanced companion controls,

I dunno what games you played, but the companions in both Fallout 1&2 were dumber than a bag of wet mice.

special melee attacks, etc. etc. etc. weren't all a part of the series before now, RIGHT? Oh, wait....

Special melee attacks are really a gross overstatement of the melee system in Fallout 2, it's not like they required anything beyond "Press Mouse-button 1" to execute.

A well-written, intelligent, non adulatory article about a modern game which got me interested in it. Soon hell will freeze over.

Wait, did you just argue that Fallout 2 was dumbed down tremendously and half the features cut out? That doesn't really speak in its favour, you know.

Anyway, we both know these are personal opinions, and there is naught we can do but agree to disagree, wouldn't you say?

Crab People Crab People Crab People

But yeah, I too think this will be the Fallout 3 that ought to have been.

People (those introduced to the series by Fallout 3) tend to take that as an insult but it's not really meant as one.

Fallout 3 put it's focus on action and the BoS/Enclave and was set on the opposite side of the country as the other games in the series.

New Vegas is putting the focus back on character development and the BoS is again playing a minor support role, the Enclave is nearly gone after the destruction of the Oil Rig.

F:NV has a lot more in common with the first two games than Fallout 3. That doesn't make Fallout 3 any less good of a game, it just makes Fallout New Vegas a much more relevant follow up on the series.

IMO

PS

Lcars, you are well aware that was a typo on dogmeats part. Pointing out such small mistakes does not help you.

You aren't really making any sense.

Right, so that people automatically keep updated with some kind of global database on what they are supposed to think of you?

Oh, that really makes sense!

That's Fallout 3 you're describing.

Oh, are we arguing about the true gospel of the Branching Dialogue, our lord and master?

Angry, aren't you?

I dunno what games you played, but the companions in both Fallout 1&2 were dumber than a bag of wet mice.

Was he really talking about AI?

Special melee attacks are really a gross overstatement of the melee system in Fallout 2, it's not like they required anything beyond "Press Mouse-button 1" to execute.

But the special attacks were there. No one was talking about how you executed them.
