Critique of the game and why I don't like it.

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 12:36 am

I hate the leveling (too linear with no attributes), and no spell creation is a slap in the face to the fans of the series. I would have never figured there would be an ES without spell creation.

How is it linear?
You can do what ever you want when ever you want. The old system was a straight line from the time you created your character and if you deviated from that, the character was broken.

As for Spell creation - I used it like twice. Its no where near as important as some people make out. Its nice, but not a big deal. (to me anyway)

It's always so convenient to cherry-pick areas of dislike and completely focus all your attention on that. You're looking for aspects you don't (want to) like so hard you're incapable of seeing the good, which is sad. You're opinion, you're entitled one, but spreading it as fact is silly.

How isn't it more linear? Everything that attributes represented in previous games, are not represented in Skyrim. Plus it was dumbed down so there wouldn't be any real choices in creation other than race and gender. If you deviated from a build in previous games, then that's your/their bad. Not to mention, you could deviate and still be more than viable in previous ES games.

You used SC twice, pretty much all that needs to be said about that.

Love it.

Don't like it, don't play it. Cannot fathom why you think anyone on this forum cares. Even in the slightest.
I suppose you got your attention fix though....

I also play many games which outright svck. Many many many. I'm fussy. Yet I've still never bothered to go and find the forums to complain about them.
Before some genius pipes up with "You must play some crappy games." I'll list a couple I've been disapointed with.

Mass Effect 2.
Forza 4.
Fall out 3.

So if one writes a praise one is being sincere and honest, if ones critiques one is looking for attention?
Brilliant.
You're a genius.

I seem to spot 20 forumers reading this thread. I guess it means enough people care about his opinion after all.
But you're still a genius.

I'm still waiting for seventyfours answer as to how a game developer could implement BF3's graphics into a game as open as Skryim on the console.

I've used it more then that.
It was a hyperbole.

My point being that its not as big a part of the game as some people make it out to be.

Yes, it is. For creative people with imagination, that think outside of the box and people that want more. Its absence is one of the major reasons magic is so linear and terrible in Skyrim. SC was a cornerstone of Magic and has been in every ES, except for Skyrim. There's so many builds that aren't even possible anymore without SC. Magic gets repetitive after only 5-6 magic builds, if that. Something that never happened in the previous games. Unlike you, I used SC extensively in every ES, knew all of its ins and outs, so trying to argue against SC merits with me will be a losing battle.

I already answered it, and Cryengine 2 is pretty open-world, you can create maps up to 16x16 km. I've worked with it quite a bit.

I disagree the graphics on the 360 are some of the best i've seen . PC is a completly different animal so you should preface your whole rant with i'm playing on a PC. If you are playing on a 360 then your whole arguement on graphics is simply wrong.

Pretty sure he said he liked the game a few times. Or are you cherry-picking anyone who is not in love with the game? What was that you said about opinion?

OP I found it spot on. Maybe if some of the more well known reviewers had said something other then hey it's 10/10 there would not be people expecting a great game. I take 10/10 to mean you can't fall through solitude to your death, dragons are always visible don't keep fighting after you absorb their souls and always fly forward, you have to do something special to break quests. I wouldn't expect to get a lot of love from the [censored] though. I give your review 10/10, might be the best review ever, review of the year oh and 3.5 of 4 :P .

no..you didn't answer my question at all..it's not about the engine, it's about what you have to work with software wise..you are working with the xbox 360 and ps3.

There is a reason why NO game is as big as skyrim with grpahics like BF3. Why? because it's not possible with the current gen console tech..lol? It's pretty obvious bud.

I disagree with virtually everything you say except 2 things, but the grahpics not being good LOL? The graphics are *amazing*. The water is pure realism. The game looks phenominal for a sandbox RPG.

What people like you don't realize is that this isn't BF3 with 100 square feet of open terrain at any given time..this is square MILES..you know nothing about games or CPU's and GPUs if you think a game could sustain BF3 graphics on a scale like Skyrim. You'd get like 2 fps.

And um, Archery does not use Auto-Aim. This isn't Halo: Reach, there is no bloom..and I know you said this is your opinion and critique..it gets to a point where you're denying facts not opinions..

I DID answer it, I said ship the console version with smaller textures and without the highest detail levels for every model. Those things could easily be done in a day, by reducing them with an automated program/script. And also disable shaders that aren't available on consoles for the console versions.

I understand that you may have a critical eye for developing a game and all the components that go into it. However there gets to be a point when someone tries to speak from authority by spewing out a bunch of technical qualities in order to strengthen their argument. I understand that the lack of shaders can be underwhelming, however I've thrown some shaders on both Morrowind and Oblivion and almost every time they make the game feel tiny. As someone who does a lot of photography I'll say that crap like HDRs and Bloom are just ugly and ruin any sense of realism. For me the only shader I enjoy looking at is DoF and even then it's rarely done well (I love the DoF in shooters but hate it in RPGs or first person action games).

A huge amass of shaders only makes the game looks fake as our eyes are accustomed to seeing the world in a certain way, and these shader techniques that try to make the game look more realistic provide the opposite effect.

Other then that I'll just say if you're going to use something as visual as shaders to illustrate a point then provide comparison pictures as an example, because without those stringing together words from a dictionary doesn't help to strengthen your point like visual aid.

It takes a brave or foolish man to post up a critique of Skyrim in these parts OP, Pitchforks will be waving and bags with dog poo will be lit and placed on your front door step.

I've already read some replies which earn the dumb really devoted fan logic of the week prize but Skyrim has a place in the hearts of many people here & it will be vigourously defended by all and by any means, whether idiotic or a comprehensive rebuttle of your critique your backside will be crisp with all the flaming and your valid points will be lost under a sea of bitter and decisive lynching.

For what it's worth you made some very good and valid points, However it's going to fall on deaf ears on a forum filled with fans of the game & it's completely understandable.

Why I don't like Skyrim overall.

1. Graphics

Is there anything good to say about the graphics? I guess some of the interiors look nice, such as Dragonsreach. Overall, it looks like a game from 2006-2007, though. And I don't think "consoles" is a good reason to accept that.

I stopped reading here on two counts:

1.) The graphics are a vast improvement over the previous elder scrolls game. This much is undeniable by anyone with both games installed to compare them.

2.) Mentioning of Consoles, which explains the first point. Consoles are made with fixed hardware. You can't exactly upgrade your video card on consoles. It doesn't matter how good the game is, your console is only going to render it so well.

i'm sorry you lost money, luckly i didnt, i love the game, i dont bother anolyzing it. Its like art, there are people who create, people who enjoy and people who anolyse... The latter are always boring.

I think it's a testament to how good Skyrim is that almost 2 months after release people are still writing walls of text about how bad it is. 95% of games I buy get played for about an hour prior to being uninstalled and forgotten. I've disliked many, many games and never felt compelled to find their forums, much less post about how much they svcked.
lol i agree.

That's more of a question for CDProjekt :)

But seriously, the meshes, the animations, and the textures, which are the very base of "graphics", are not of very high quality, some downright amateurish, and that is not in question.

OP, I admit, this is one of the better and thought out, abeit harsh post of criticism I've read on these forums. I don't agree with everything you said, but I can totally see where you're coming from. A lot of great points. I think I got a great game for 60 bucks personally. So many things could have and should have been exspanded upon, but streamlining and simplifying is the new way it seems. I feel the graphics are really good, (pC) but I agree combat and magic feels lacking. My biggest issue is the lack of personality the NPCs sport.
