Damage Threshold

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:55 pm

Two questions (sorry if they've already been answered, but 4 pages is a bit much to read).

Will DT be effected by armor condition?

Will shots below the DT still damage the armor?

This came up on the Power Armor Predictions thread. It seems like something like a minigun should eventually be able to chip away at the armor enough to where it starts to damage the wearer, even if its individual projectile damage was below the initial DT. Real body armor works like this - a vest might stop a slug, but another shot in the same spot has a higher chance of getting through.

*Edit - This might explain this:

On a slightly related note-

In one of the gameplay videos, I noticed that the shield (indicating threshold) was actually removed after enough damage was done- does anyone know how this factors into the equation? Is armor depleted once it absorbs a certain amount of damage? Maybe this has to do with the condition of the armor being brought to zero? Having only played Fallout 3, I'm new to this concept.

I'll see if I can dig up the video and post it as an example.

So if I get this straight, if a weapon does less damage than the DT it will not do full damage. But once the weapon does damage equal or greater than the DT it will always do 100% damage? Personally I really hope that Obsidian will reconsider and put DR back in together with DT.

It only makes sense to have both DT and DR on armor, otherwise the difference is really marginal :(
No, a weapon's damage simply has the armour's DT subtracted, and the result is applied. They've mentioned that some damage will be dealt, but that could easily be "DT reduces damage to a minimum of 1 point" or "DT can't reduce damage to less than 10%". The difference isn't anything like marginal, it's night and day, and has a huge impact on weapon choice- they've even mentioned how lategame you'll get low DPS weapons with high single-shot damage that you'll need to keep around to hurt people in good armour, so you don't just go "Okay, I'll just use miniguns".

MiamiThrice: Adding a 'minimum damage' into things is nothing like invalidating the whole thread.

Look at lordgrievous post above. This thread has been invalidated.

No, http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-fallout-new/700685

The video also shows the red shield alone (1:34) when the legionnaire is shot in distance and the damage starts to reduce only when he gets closer, and seeing the guy uses a shotgun... well, do the math.

Is the red shield always there or does it only show when the damage your weapon does is less than the DT of the armor your shooting at?

It is there all the time, but the important part is that it shows there also without the enemy healthbar. My guess is, that the red shield shows when DT either blocks everything (no healthbar visible since no damage is done), or has a certain amount of effect (say, blocking half the damage done, for example) that illustrates the player is not being all that effective.

Edit... and yes I know DR isn't going to be in NV, but just to get a clear definition.

It is. I've heard that there are gonna be armours with only DR or only DT and those with both DR and DT

Wait it will be there even if you weapon is above the DT? Say my weapon does 40 damage and the armor DT is 10 that red shield is still there? I can't see that video because I'm on my phone and I can't load it. Is there a number next to the red shield or just a red shield?

Isn't the red shield an indicator that your current weapon isn't effective at what you are currently shotting at?

I don't remember when exactly it is going to show, but there is an image of a broken shield when the guy uses the light machine gun against another foe, and soon after comes the shotgun scene. I'll see if I can find what Sawyer said about the shield...

That's how I remember it was explained. I guess the level of effectiviness also factor in, not just "No damage".

I'm pretty sure that the red shield is only there if your weapon damage is less than the DT, to alert the player that their weapon isn't very good.

You know, this would be an excellent time for a dev to step in and elaborate.

I'm not sure if he said why it was removed but I am positive that he did say its gone completely and now its strictly DT.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Ausir/J.E._Sawyer_talks_Damage_Threshold is all old news, and there's no telling if and how they tweaked it.

But:
In F:NV, the red shield appears next to a target's health meter when you hit it for damage that is equal to or less than the target's damage threshold.

Does the red shield only appear during VATS?

It appears whenever you damage a target and remains for a few seconds after.
There is a value in GECK we use for tuning that specifies a minimum percentage of damage an attack can do, regardless of DR/DT. We've adjusted it a few times and probably will continue to do so. But in all cases it has been a low percentage of an already low base value, so using something like a Varmint Rifle against high DT armor is a good way to get killed.

Can't find anything on the broken shield image, though.

Cool thanks for digging that up but didn't you say a couple posts up that in the video the red shield even showed when no damage was being done because the enemy healthbar wasnit showing? In that quote though sawyer says the red shield comes up during an attack...

Well, the video did show show a red shield when the enemy was shot and there was no healthbar before he got closer and got shot again.

I don't know what's going on. :P

Let people have their say...you dont have to read this thread, nobody is forcing you to.

From what i've read & seen about DT ,it sounds better to me,and i also think it's the reason we have different ammo types.
Should make the game more interesting.....& if done right, should make you think more tactically about enemies....all good in my book :)

Ok for one dont be a [censored], and i didnt say anybody couldnt have their say. But if you will read my comment before trolling it that would be much appreciated. The OP was simply asking for an explination of what DT is, which was explained many a time. Most people are just arguing over DT and DR, which im sure there is a thread already for that. Sorry for wanting to stay on topic, as it keeps these threads less cluttured....

A broken shield means that the DT is being reduced to 0 (typically by armor-piercing ammunition).

So any Armor-Piercing Ammunition completes cuts down DT?

So a broken shield appears when your weapon damage is equal to or higher than the DT, and a red shield appears when it is lower? Right?

This is the very straightforward explanation of Damage Threshold: DT is subtracted from a weapon's listed DAM, but a weapon will never do less than MinDam (in our case, 20%) of its listed damage.

The shield appears when more than half of the damage that should be inflicted has been absorbed by Damage Threshold. E.g. you shoot a target with 15 DT using a weapon that does 25 DAM. 15 points are absorbed, which is more than 50% of the initial DAM, so a red shield appears. 10 points get through. Second example: you shoot a target with 15 DT using a weapon that does 10 DAM. All 10 points are absorbed. However, the MinDam GECK setting (0.2) raises the damage to 20% its initial value (10), so 2 points get through. A red shield appears.

The broken shield appears when the target's DT is reduced to 0. E.g. you shoot a target with 5 DT using .308, Armor Piercing that reduces DT by 15. 5-15 = -10. A broken red shield appears.

If less than 50% of the weapon's damage is absorbed by DT, no shield of any kind is visible. E.g. you shoot a target with 25 DT using a weapon that does 70 DAM. 45 damage gets through. No shield appears.

You posted that the thread did'nt need 49 posts for DT.....the fact that the topic has 94 posts means people wanted to know more.
And my intension was not to offend you , if thats the case i apologise.
I just did'nt think it made sense that you thought the thread had reached its limit, thats for mods to decide.
And the topic got a response from a dev & many more after we posted.....yes some of it may have been repeated, but it can also bring other questions about DT too.
Hope you enjoy your game :)

Sadly, we get it wrong more than we get it right as a community on speculations like this

You don't know how many threads I have kept in favorites so I could go back and chuckle at them after the game releases.
