Discuss Dark Souls here.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/07/petition-attrition-dark-souls-confirmed-for-pc/

"Dark Souls : Prepare to Die Edition" coming to PC. There's a preview in the new PC Action.

New bosses for the PC version everything else is 1:1 from the console version.

Release date is August.

I'm excited. I've always been interested in this game but since I don't own a console, I've never had a chance to play it. :)

I know it will be a cake walk as hard games go, but never the less into the fray I will go.

It really isn't easy. Believe it when people say it's hard. It really is. Recall Battletoads and the original Contra? Around that level of hardness. Halo on Legendary and Gears of War on Insane are a walk in the park to Dark Souls. Hell, today's games aren't even hard compared to the oldschool ones of the NES era. Dark Souls is a throwback game in terms of difficulty.

The thing with those oldschool NES games is that they're hard in an unfair way. Platformer games where you have to drop down somewhere where you can't see, with a big chance of landing on spikes or whatever. That sort of stuff. From what I've been told Dark Souls is much more fair in that any time you die it's really your own fault.

Monster Hunter veteran. I know about difficulty. I've played and almost beaten Contra 4 with the base 3 lives. I kind of lost interest after I got so close to the end though. I also lost interest because tiny baby DS was cramping my hands to much for me to play without it becoming painful.

I beated Contra 1 with 11 lives, that means with the base 3 lives, 2 continues weren't enough. Need a lot more practice sadly.

I can hardly call old NES games hard, they all follow some formulae with tight timing and resource control, just practice more and you should be able to handle them with no problem. It's all about practice, even the 5min Mario Brothers run, it's all about practicing.

I wouldn't go that far. You don't have a limited number of lives, there are sufficient shortcuts and checkpoints, and you're not required to memorize the pattern and placement of hundreds of enemies at once. Dark Souls is tough, but perfectly beatable, even in areas that weren't as playtested as much as they should have been, unlike [censored] Battletoads.

Then what the hell constitutes a hard game?

Nothing is hard when you put enough effort on it.

I can't wait until the PC version. I've already got Dark Souls for the 360 but I'd much rather play on my computer.

How does the multiplayer work exactly?

You can enter the game world of other players as some sort of phantom?

Pretty much. If you want to play co-op, you place a summon sign down on the ground. Other players of a similar level to you can see that sign in the exact corresponding place you put it and can choose to summon you if they like. Summons can only be done by players in human form, and only if they have not yet beaten the boss in the area the sign is placed in.

Invasions work differently in that there are multiple types. Some involve using an item in an area to invade the game (done automatically by the matchmaking system) of a human player who has not beaten the area boss yet. Some involve equipping a ring, which allow you to be summoned by the matchmaking system to kill human players in specific areas. And some types involve putting up a summon sign that allows players to summon you to duel.

Nothing is hard when you put enough effort on it.
But obviously, some things require more effort than others.

It is true, but subjective. Some people won't stand a second try, some wouldn't stop practicing with 200 fails, just to grasp that split 0.01 sec.

So it's not really about difficulty, but how much passion is worn off before the success.

I have infinite lives, saves, and checkpoints. I'm unstoppable. It's really the NPC's who ought to be scared of me. A terrifying god of death who no matter how many times you kill keeps coming back to slay all of your friends and you.

I finally started playing again, continuing with my level 25 knight. Decided to get the drake sword since I was tired of my crappy weapons and killed the gargoyles with ease. Now moving on to the garden.

Got the gargoyle tail axe and the helm also which are pretty cool.

To all those who haven't played the game and plan on playing the PC version, don't believe the ridiculous difficulty hype. Dark Souls really isn't that difficult a game. All it takes is a bit of patience and methodical playing.

That also doesn't mean it's necessarily easy, especially when compared to the average game these days. It can still punish you pretty harshly, but generally only if you forgo the aforementioned patience.

Well I imagine there is an adjustable difficulty setting for the game, right?

Have you played ME3 on Insanity? That was damn hard. Hard Reset is also pretty challenging on the hardest setting.

And I've enjoyed playing a highly modded version of New Vegas where I die dozens of times with almost every combat encounter.

I suppose the main difference with Dark Souls is that when you die you have to restart the level or something, right?

When you die, you lose all your souls and are sent back to the last fire you stopped at. You have a chance to retrieve your souls from the location you died at, but if you die again before you are able to retrieve them, they are lost forever. So it can get really frustrating if you lose the thousands of souls you were saving up.

More like you restart at the last Bonfire you rested at (there are no levels in Dark Souls, it's kinda' more like a Metroidvania). You lose all souls and humanity you had in the process (the former acts as both experience and money, while the latter has a number of subtle effects on the game), but you can get them back provided you reach the place you died without...dying again first. But you keep any items you got.

EDIT--

Ah, invade'd!

I'm sitting at 19 vitality, 16 endurance, 20 strength and 12 dexterity. What would be my best bet to increase? (Level 25 knight)

Vitality and Endurance, in that order of priority. The first gives you more health, the latter will allow you to equip more schwag and get more stamina. Your Strength and Dexterity are good for the time being.

I see, so it's not that the combat is necessarily more challenging than other games, but you really have to try hard to avoid dying or there are severe penalties.
