Dark Souls Discussion Thread #3 (PC version confirmed!)

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 10:13 am

No. Just no. GFWL, seriously? What is this, 2007? Nobody likes GFWL. GFWL offers barely any advantages or purpose, and the things it does offer are done way better by Steam.

Nothing good has ever come of GFWL. It was a mess with GTA4, it was a mess with Bulletstorm where you couldn't even get to the main menu, it was a mess with Arkham City where some people's savegames randomly disappeared forever... Admittedly it managed to avoid being awful in Fallout 3, but I think it was pretty much optional there. So I hope 'support' for GFWL means the same here.

My personal rule is to never pay more than 10 euros for a GFWL game unless the use of GFWL in it is unintrusive. So I'm going to wait, hear what other people say about its use of GFWL, and hopefully it's not too bad and I'll pick it up at launch price.

If it's the massive pop up when you start a game with the 'you will not be allowed to load your saves/the main menu before logging into GFWL and updating it' system I will definitely be waiting. I've had to deal with that nonsense and the issues that sometimes came with it too many times.

I'll definitely pick it up either on release or at a discount, depending on the situation and the actual launch price, but this is a real kick in the teeth.

GFWL, prepare to die.

Edit
I have infinite lives, saves, and checkpoints. I'm unstoppable. It's really the NPC's who ought to be scared of me. A terrifying god of death who no matter how many times you kill keeps coming back to slay all of your friends and you.

Er, no... no you don't. The NPCs revive and go to full health every time rest, or die. If you die, you lose your experience. There are no saves. There are very few check points.

Well, so much for that. A shame, considering the new bosses look pretty cool, and the addition of some new major background characters, like Artorias and Gough, sounds nice.

Damn it! The promise of new areas, bosses and equipment sounds great, but I'm not going to deal with GFWL.

What is there to deal with that would make you skip a game? I have ~5 GFWL games and the only trouble I've had was one game's GFWL Key reaching its activation limit. ~5 minutes initial setup, a few seconds to log into a GFWL account when you start a game.

GFWL looks up your savegame files under your document and settings. When you updated your GFWL, the software may looked up in the wrong directory, so you have to manually look them up and move them to proper location. I'm not sure if this some of those GFWL out there but that's what I found for FO3.

Parries and backstabs all survivable with 2k hp and good defences thanks to Havels and 99 humanity :hehe:

I hate and don't believe in DRM so this is a no sale for me regardless if they go with GFWL or Steam.

God dammitt, then they'll probably cite "poor sales" as an excuse not to port the sequel/DLC

See it as an extra challenge. Sort of like a difficulty setting. GFWL adds a bit to it. :D

I was excited about this, until I found out about GFWL. There's a petition up to move it to Steam, I already signed.

It would be hilarious if the number of petitioners against GFWL would exceed the number of people asking for Dark Souls PC in the first place.

Games for Windows Live: So bad even console players don't want it associated with their games.

Signed. Although I don't think this one will get any response.

They do know the game would sell so many more copies on the front page of Steam with a discount on it, right?

I think they're probably using GFWL for its match making service for the online aspect, not so much as DRM. Since they've already done the online stuff for Xbox Live, I assume GFWL would be familiar to them, making it easier.

Of course the cost of going the cheap easy route with GFWL is going to be higher than the cost of going with the more challening Steam, because GFWL is going to hurt their sales significantly if it's not implemented well. Which is likely.

I don't know. It's a Japanese developer, they've been VERY clueless as to what anything outside of Japan wants lately. Barring some exceptions. It wouldn't surprise me if this whole Steam phenomenon simply passed over their heads.

Edit
Japan isn't that big on PC gaming. Its developers might not be aware of how big Steam is for PC gamers elsewhere.

Can I see the US console art? Link to it? That is some nice art though.
