Dawnguard - a huge flaw in the bad guys' plan...

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:57 am

It occurred to me that if the vampires succeed in blotting out the sun, all the plantlife will die, and everything else will eventually starve, leaving them with nothing to feed on. That's if the planet doesn't freeze solid first.

They really didn't think this through, did they?

All the trailer said was "the tyranny of the sun will end." We don't, strictly speaking, know how that would be accomplished. So we don't actually know what the plan is and how it would affect other beings.

Well it did show in the trailer the sun being blotted out by red and darkness.

Well they do say eating the souls of the living and the dead.. I thought that was a little weird, but I guess it makes more sense in this context.

Perhaps reddening the sun might make the day survivable for vampires without wiping out other life? We don't really know how it works until they release more information or we play the DLC.

They are editing the sun to create a hospitable sun for vampires, not destroy it, watch the trailer and read the forum carefully.

+1 This.

I think dimming the sun or altering its spectrum to be less damaging. Sounds good to me. We'd also not be able to see to play if it were blackened entirely!

The sun is a hole in the fabric of Oblivion through which the Aetherius shines. Nirn itself is an infinite plane that looks like a globe when observed from a distance. I don't think you can apply Earth logic so easily.

Chances are this is a new fresh tasty plot hole for us to devour, I hope dawngaurd is good but i'm losing faith in bethesda's writing.

In all likeliness, that refers to Molag Bal's realm. The purple realm is most likely Coldharbor, and the player will get to go there and hunt the corrupted souls of mortals.

Yes, the Sun is a rip in the Aetherius, and Magicka comes through that hole. The stars are the same. When you look at the blue sky, you see Magicka. When you look at the night sky, you see the Oblivion.

So, yeah, Earth physics and logic doesn't really apply here.

Things work differently in Tamriel. For example, sun isn't a star, but pretty much a hole in the sky where magic pours into Mundus. Also, I believe every single TES game has plants growing in underground dungeons

Life is stubborn to say the least. I'm pretty sure some plants and animals would survive; they would mute and adapt. So would men and mer and beastfolk too.

Nicely put. I knew some of the lore regarding the creation of nirn and such, but I didn't think of it at until you mentioned it.

Celectial moderators! :D

Maybe we will get Vvardenfell-style flora and fauna.

Of course, biological life doesn't simply adapt overnight.

Even if all life does eventually die, it fits the way I see my main character: short-sighted and impulsive.

of course, nothing of the sort will ever happen since we're still playing a video game :P

the world is put together through magic, it is not held together by the same forms of nature as we see here on Earth. Magnus would like to have a word or two with you... Not to mention this is why there aren't many scientific structures such as evolution.

Elder Scroll magic (as in actual Elder Scrolls magic, not regular magic in the game) isn't stuck to the rules of realworld physics or even Nirn physics. What plants, animals and people need from the sunlight will likely still get through (just like on a cloudy day), but whatever it is that harms vampires during the day won't.
