Demon's Souls spiritual successor named Dark Souls

See, World 5 is my favorite. I feel like it has the best plot going along with it, and I feel like it's the most f'ed up place ever conceived.

World 2 is also up on the list, but it's too easy. Too bad we'll never get the chance to play World 6.

It's the damned Black Phantom Mindflayer in 3-2. The one on the stairs. Normally, I just shoot spells at him, and block his spells with my shield. But he's just been so much harder this play-through. I got through once, then accidentally fell off something and died because I forgot the worm dudes are at the top of the stairs.

Normally, my strategy for him is to equip a Thief's Ring or cast Cloak just so I can watch him from a distance. Wait for him to turn around and ascend the stairs again, in which case, I grab my best weapon and CHAAAAARRRRRGE! Usually, I backstab him, which either kills him instantly, or knocks him down the stairs. If I don't, I attack wildly 'til he's dead. Use anything fire-related, it hurts and makes them flinch.

Another thing I noticed: "The weapon upgrade system will be easier to understand." This could be good or this could be bad. Personally, I like Demon's Souls' upgrade system. It's not really that hard to grasp, yet it's deep enough to actually encourage building characters wisely and present some variety. Now, it seems like FROM could either keep what was good about the system and simply make it less complicated (but not less complex), or just -- as much as I don't particularly like the phrase -- dumb it down. Hopefully it'll be the former.

I'd say the biggest problem with the upgrade system in Demon's is that it's not exactly obvious how it's done. You practically need a guide to figure out what you need to forge the unique weapons, as well as to figure out how to get some of the ores (especially the [censored] Pure Bladestone :flame:). We'll see how it goes.

Damn straight. "Giants of the Northern Lands." Yeesh, why did the coolest sounding world get cut?

I will agree with you that the Valley of Defilement is excellent. It's right behind Latria for me. The Valley also really reminds me of King's Field, which is always a good thing.

Also, I really wish I could have seen the looks on the faces of the guys at the ESRB when/if they found out that said Valley features

They said Demon's Souls was the spiritual successor to the King's Field series (though it seemed more like it was a successor to shadow tower imo) but I found that it didn't quite live up to that claim. Imo Demon's souls way under achieved and even with that it was still superbly awesome. Don't get me wrong I'd give Demon's Souls a 9 out of 10 any day, but I'm really hoping that they pick up the pace in their new title Dark Souls. If they do Dark Souls right, that will be a game to truly behold.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever see a true follow-up to King's Field. Even though Demon's Souls dissappointed me in this respect, it is still an amazing game. I still can't help but hope Dark Souls will move a little closer to its King's Field roots though.

Agreed. Hopefully some day we'll see a game worthy to the lineage of the KF series.

I think i was almost done with my first playthrough when I figured it out. And when I say figure it out I mean googling "shard of bladestone." man, did I feel stupid.

As far as a fav level, it'd have to go w/ 3-2. The first time I played it was so intimidating. The poison, the size, the empty darkness. It is really hard to tell if your even headed in the right direction. This is also my most hated level.

Always so much fun to invade that level and wait at the drawbridge lever to ambush someone. :chaos:

Oh Demon's Souls, why do you make being evil so damn fun!

On a side note: If anyone would like to organize a PVP tournament, I'd be soooo down. I love me some PVP.

Nevermind, I lied. World 3 is no longer That One Level to me. That "honor" now belongs to World 4. [censored] SKELETONS!!!

Ha ha, just when you think you have them figured out they can still get you. The BP gold skeletons are arguably some of the games toughest opponents, even if it might be where they're positioned that give them such an advantage. Any weapon w/ hammer damage eats skeletons for breakfast.

Honestly I don't even bother with melee, if I have to spam arrows and spells for 5 min, so be it. I'd rather be alive.

Demon's Souls was and still is awesome with the exeption of the ridiculous amount of rolling. Increased stamina consumption would be an easy fix for that though. I'm stilla bit worried how easy it's going to be to co-op with friends and find eachother in this totally open world, we'll have to wait and see for that.

plenty of people have, just not me.

not to mention that damn dual kat skelly w/ pure black world tendency is the only enemy that drops it. A drop that is "very rare" and is rumored to be unaffected by luck nor the sword o' searching. Those sick bastards at FROM.

I believe the unique hiltless can be upgrade to an "S" bonus for dex, so it is an alternative if you wanna deal w/ the - hp per hit.

IMO, go w/ a moon build for the asian swords, less of a headache.

i killed him like fifty times tryin to get one, got to world black then disconnected from psn to keep it that way.
yeah, jumpin through hoops.
as much as i like my high dex wanderer - luring black phantoms towards ledges and then taking the fall while they go splat is way up there on the cheeky win scale - i think i'll try a new build for a while, it's been a while since i played and i'll have to get back in to the swing of it.

Yes, I and plenty of other people have. It's not impossible.

It's rare, yeah. But the Large Sword of Searching isn't going to help because it doesn't affect the rarity of drops, only the actual drop rate. And since that BP skellie already has a 100% drop rate, well, it doesn't do any good. I'm not sure about luck not having any effect though.

I've got my very first character still. He's at SL200. And my only other character is at SL 120 for PvP.

Send me a message sometime. Your 180 is in range of my 200.

Hell yeah, I might just do that sometime.

I just started playing Demon's Souls, and I am loving it. I have a question though: The first time I logged online on Demon's Souls, so as to play multiplayer and read messages etc., it was working. Now every time I log in, theres absolutely no one :(.

There's a few things that could be happening, Gord. Either you could be logged in, and the game's player base is simply declining as it has been, which would explain not seeing anyone for times. OR. You could be "logging in" and Demon's Souls notoriously finicky servers are not actually logging you in (or, rather, keeping you logged in). When you log in next time and you don't see anyone, look for white phantom players, messages and bloodstains. Also, press select -- if the online menu comes up then you're online. If it doesn't, just log out and back in until it will come up and keeps coming up.

Ah. Well, the first time, when it worked, they (the messages/bloodstains etc.) did disappear about half way through. So I suppose it is logging me out.

Demon's Souls is good but it's like fighting is the only component to the game. There's no story to speak of really, no mini games and i suppose it's really just getting weapons and fighting.
I love how every weapon in the game has unique animations though, that's awesome.
Hopefully Dark Souls adds more stuff.....

:nope: i hope it doesn't add a story, a good setting is more than enough for me, and demon's souls excels in this regard, it's refreshing to have a game completely free of cliches, which developer written stories inevitably always bring.

Of course it's about fighting. It's an action RPG. But you'd be wrong to say there is little story in the game. This is simply FROM's style. They weave quite interesting stories and characters, but they leave it to the player to delve into and uncover it. If you pay attention, soak in every little detail, you'll find that there's actually quite a lot of really good and interesting backstory in Demon's Souls that you would never know about had you just played through the game hacking away the whole time. I love this style, so I hope FROM keeps it up.

and mini-games? that's a joke right? ...right?

Oh. there's a story all right. It's just not thrown into your face. You have to dig deep in the game's world to uncover it.
