Demon's Souls spiritual successor named Dark Souls

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:46 am

- This is the official title of what was previously Project Dark

- This time they want to increase the amount of field exploration in the game.
- All fields are seamless, so whatever you can see, you can reach and explore. If you see a fortress or castle walls in the distance, you can eventually get there.
- There will be no map display in the game, just a position display marker.

- They aim to make the game just as challenging than Demon's Souls, but also just as rewarding when you succeed. The sense of achievement is important.

- The gameplay will be similar to Demon's Souls in concept, where it's about trial and error and learning from your mistakes to play better.

- The game does not share the same world and story as Demon's Souls.
- The game will not use the same format as Demon's Souls in terms of having 5 worlds connected via a hub.

- Instead all maps in the game will be linked seamlessly in a connected world. The pace of the game will feel more about exploration and discovering locations, which you can then go inside into a dungeon or whatever and explore the interior further.
- There will be more complex level designs in the game using more vertical design in areas and such.

- The world setting is based on medieval dark fantasy, and will contain themes like "high fantasy of kings and knights", "death and the depths of the earth", and "the flames of chaos".

- The character creation process will not be class based.
- The play style of the player character will have much more freedom this time.
- There will be many more spells and items, and the animation and uniqueness of weapons will also be increased.

- The online elements are very similar to Demon's Souls. There is cooperative and PvP.
- You can still leave messages, and see players who died at various places.
- There will be no Soul Tendency this time because they don't want to have to use dedicated servers to handle that **** again.
- Instead this time there will be more features allowing players to engage in "mutual role playing" which they say are still under wraps. They'll reveal more when it's time.

There are scans out there that a google search could bring up.

This is looking to be the best JRPG this gen or at least comparable to Demon's Souls

Demon's Souls was not a JRPG. This is not going to be one. ARPG from Japan, maybe, but not JRPG.

As for the announcement... Challenge. Bloody. Accepted. Bring it, punks! I got my platinum after exactly 108 hours and 13 minutes. The biggest sense of achievement I had for quite a few years.

I don't want to get into an argument over this and I dont want this topic to become one over the definition of what defines an rpg, but it's definitely an jrpg. It's atypical from standard jrpgs

JRPGs are liek FFs...and that can't be compared to Demon's Souls. Gameplay, story, world, creatues etc...are similar to western RPGs (although you do see some Japonese influence).

No world tendency this time? Aww. The reasons are understandable, but I rather liked the whole idea of the game's difficulty changing subtly in the background. I'm also slightly disappointed that it takes place in a whole new world. I rather liked (what little) we could see of Demon's Souls world and would have liked to have seen it expanded. :(

That aside...[censored] YES! Look out, Skyrim, you might have a serious contender for Xet's best of 2011.

It's a Japanese take on western fantasy with segments of eastern mythology in some parts such as world 4 and it's not the first Japanese rpg to have action gameplay which btw is more complex and well done than what we see in western rpgs. It's obvious Betheseda took notes from Demon's Souls combat system.

Yeah, maybe they'll put in a night and day system that affects the difficulty and drops, but I'm interested in learning more about the mutual role playing system.

Indeed, it's an action RPG. And a very good one at that.

How so?

Sounds pretty cool, I'm liking the whole open world thing they're supposedly going for.

Really need to get round to finishing Demon Soul's at some point, just haven't been in the mood to play it lately.

How so?

After the game as released back in 09 one of the staff members came on saying how much a lot of the guys were really enjoying the game. Fast forward to last month where information was revealed to how much they were revamping the combat system to similiar to Demon's Soul and changing the mechanics so you have to put thought into how you go about battling opponents.

Demon's Souls is exclusive, but Dark Souls isn't. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6297089.html

...Y'know, I wish they picked a different name for this game. Just so they could, I dunno, have different initials. Least we don't need to worry about an awkward apostophe.

Wow I stand corrected I thought it would be PS3 exclusive but nope it's going to be on both the PS3 and the 360. That means I could possibly get it.

Demon's Souls is an amazing game. I played it for over a year quite consistently, platinumed it legitimately, met some awesome people, had a great time in the tournaments the community was/is so fond of, etc. Just a great gaming experience overall. I'm really excited to see what FROM will give us with Dark Souls.*

* Even though I still really really want the true sequel King's Field deserves.

This is going to be a great your for gaming in my opinion. My list of games wanted is hovering around 14 now. Thank goodness this is coming to the box this time I hate console exclusives.

Well, they have what they wanted: Immediate familiarity with the name - having heard of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls probably sounds very close to anyone - and still a different name so that they don't infringe on Sony's copyright of the first name.
That's also why they had to leave that world behind, but hey, as long as it's dark, atmospheric and filled with the weirdest abominations and screwed-up lost people one might imagine... Who cares? ^_^

substantially more difficult than Demon's Souls

That sounds... unnecessary. Demon's Souls is hard enough. I hope it doesn't become unfairly hard like Ninja Gaiden 2, that would totally ruin it for me. The changes to the game world sound exciting, but I'm interested to see how that increased difficulty works out.

Demon's Souls wasn't hard. It was challenging and a learning experience. It never wants unfair reaction times from you - like Ninja Gaiden -, never expects you to absolutely know what will happen next - like Ninja Gaiden -, or puts you up against an unascertainable number of enemies - like, well, guess. That stuff can make a game hard or unfair.
Just pushing through a game should not be the reason to play it, really, no matter what the tendency of modern mainstream games is. ^_^

[censored] yes, finally a game I want on the 360 is coming to it.

I wonder if by increasing the difficulty they mean getting rid of glitches that make boss fights easier :P

You mean like Flamelurker not being able to properly navigate the area you fight him in?
