Demon's Souls spiritual successor named Dark Souls

@ Gordstaman:

Yeah game is gettin old so there's very few 1st time players.

And match making can be a complete pain, as you have to communicate through the PSN network. I like the no chat aspect, but really hope they streamline the match making system for Dark.

I suggest getting that friend's list going with other Demon's Souls fans. I'm sure some one on this board would be down to play too. My PSN tag is Ratt_707, haven't been playing much, but I'm on time to time.

You are in body form when trying to summon right? :) Summoner = body form Getting summoned = soul form.

If you haven't noticed yet, certain levels are pvp / co-op hot spots.

4-1,1-4 being the most obvious. 1-3,2-1,4-2 also see some action time to time. These areas, during peak hrs, should give you a few ppl to play with and you can build your friends list from there.

Hopefully PSN will be back up by October. :P

I'm super psyched. As soon as I viewed the new trailer, I was thinking the entire time "this here new trailer being released means they're gettin' pretty serious. I love it".

Can't say I'm too enamored by the schwag...but the fact that it's going for the same price as the standard edition makes for a pretty good deal.

Heh, tell me about it. Pendulum traps, ambushes, enemies that pick us up and throw us...this is going to be both fun and "fun."

I'm looking forward to it. The new trailer is pretty spiffy. It'll be fun to get all my Demon's Souls friends and vets together to start playing this and all be newbs again for a while.

I'm still wondering how they're going to make it "significantly harder" without making it an exercise in maschism. Demon's Souls is hard enough, I'm not sure it needs to be any harder. Although the one thing I would change is the ability to trivialise most of the boss fights by standing a long way away and killing them with a bow and arrow.

Yeah! New info. New trailer looked awesome, and those boss creatures look epic, specifically the huge knight and the fat guy that look like he wields some type of hammer.

Looks like we have the pleasure of dealing with alot of environmental traps as well.

I simply cannot wait. :) This game looks brutal. Cannot wait to attempt to get through this game WITHOUT looking anything up on the interwebz. If I need help w/ the game, I'm gonna do my best to only get aide from phantom guides and in game hints from other players.

Eagerly waiting new MP info. : )

That's sort of how my first experience with Demon's Souls was. I went through the entire game without ever looking anything up online or in the guide book I had from the special edition. I didn't even have the benefits of multi-player and its many aspects due to a terrible internet connection. Let me tell you, going through that entire game completely alone.. that was an awesome experience.

I will utilize multi-player with Dark Souls though, now that I have a decent connection. Plus, I want to be a part of the early PvP scene and watch it build up to something that will hopefully be as good as the Demon's Souls community is now (or, was, I suppose I should say -- it's past its glory days).

Good for you. In all honestly, I doubt I would have completed the game w/ out more experienced phantom guides showing me new tactics.

I got the game about a year after release, so I also missed the initial wave of PVP. I am excited to be a part of the community from the start and being able to witness the evolution of the strategies and tactics. By the time I was playing PVP in demon's souls, only a handful of builds and weapons were truly viable in PVP combat.

If there's anything I am hoping for in Dark Soul's PVP it is the viability of drastically different character builds.

That and the absence of the infamous mirdan hammer. That weapon was complete B.S. I feel shame for even creating a build to utilize that damn noob stick.

Every time I see someone wielding the MH, I die a little on the inside.

But then again, pretty much every PvP viable weapon has been wielded so much, that almost all of them have their infuriatingly cheap ways of winning, so whatever, I suppose. That's something that, like you, I hope Dark Souls addresses a bit better.

Yeah! Real men like me use the War Scythe! :P

...Y'know, I think my exploits in Demon's Souls were really lucky. I seldom actually found myself on the receiving end of a polearm.

Regardless, I hope Dark Souls has something similar to the Dragon Slayer Bone Smasher. I love that thing.

Some new tiny snippets of info from a hands-on preview, including the suggestion that some bosses can't be beaten without online co-op help:

A long fight follows, and once he's downed, we're expecting the demo to finish. "That wasn't a boss fight," cautions Hirono. Suddenly, he looks out to another building close by – in its doorway stands a gigantic warrior monster, many times large than the one we've just slayed. It is the Iron Golem glimpsed in a recent Dark Souls trailer. "This boss is perhaps one that you can't beat alone," says Hirono, suggesting that co-op play could be an essential element in end-of-level encounters.

PS I'm just starting a faith build and the Mirdan Hammer is recommended as one of the weapons. What's wrong with it?

That would be bad. I'm fairly sure though that it's like Demon's Souls - it's just hard, but manageable with the right equipment on your own. Which that preview build had not provided.

Cool stuff. I wouldn't worry about the "unbeatable" boss, though, I'm going to guess that that's just hyping on Hirono's part. Wonder what those cages are that they "ignored." And why was he so dismissive of the Onion Knight?

As for the Mirdan Hammer, the "problem" with it (and all polearms, for that matter) is that it's incredibly cheap and easy to use in PvP. Just face the general direction of the player and press R1. Again. And again. And again. It hits pretty hard, pretty fast, and has near unbeatable range. Anyone who gets caught within the combo is unlikely to ever get a hit off on you.

Nothing really. It's just a weapon that is pretty intrinsically over-powered. It's got reach. It's got quite a bit of power. It's got low stamina-usage. It's got a stun-lock (when you hit someone, they sort of flinch, then you hit them again, they flinch again, you hit them again, etc.). Really though, all weapons are abused like this now days. It's just that the MH is one of the most abused, as all of the new players seem to flock to it.

Mirdan's Hammer it is then :D

I beat the game once normally and then I found the dupe glitch on a forum somewhere. Basically you can have unlimited amounts of demon's souls, grass, stones, etc. Now it's really hard not to be tempted to use the glitch.

In response to the dupe glitch: everyone uses it. It's useful in PvP when you want to create a new character and get them up to speed quickly. Besides, if you didn't dupe, it's not like you wouldn't get the same stuff from someone else or eventually. The only real exception I see to that is Dark Moon Grass, which people dupe and abuse all the time.

Nice article, lots of good info. Interesting that it says players actually choose a role as a helper or invader (at least that's how I read it.) I wonder what happens when you want to do both. Can you do both w/ the same character?

The part about the "treasure chest monsters" is cool. Great way to make you paranoid while looting.

Cages to trap other players? I'd love for that to be true but it sounds like the writer's speculation. There were a few of set pieces in Demon's Souls that seemed like they'd do something but really just misdirected the player. *cough* 6th arch stone *cough*

PS I'm just starting a faith build and the Mirdan Hammer is recommended as one of the weapons. What's wrong with it?

Nothing wrong w/ it really but many players consider it to be overpowerd. It has insane phantom range, stunlock, and guard breaking capabilities, low stat requirements, and is easy to use. Same reason many players consider it to be a very good weapon.

Not a classy weapon IMO, but if someone wants to spam cloud spells at you use scraping spear or resort to other "cheap" tactics, then I say use whatever it takes to win.

Nothing wrong with using it in single player though. :)

Another interesting option for a faith build is the blessed morning star. Shares the same move set as the gulliotine axe w/ the good stunlock. Has great guard break due to hammer damage. And can also cause a bleeding status effect. Low stats requirements are a great bonus as well. Nice RP factor for a faith build too but other weapons tend to out class it at high levels. Did I sell that hard enough :)

A more traditional build would probably just use the blessed gulliotine axe for high lvl pvp.

I got my Blessed Mirdan Hammer to +5 and it does really good damage, but I prefer using a 1-handed weapon. I'm gonna get the Knights Sword and make that into a Blessed weapon. I already have the Morning Star but I think it does quite low direct damage although it does have the bleed effect. I'll dupe some stones and get testing.

I loved the blessed knight's sword, a very balanced weapon. Great for a back up weapon, cause it can match up against most weapons w/ out any huge disadvantages.

Morning Star is more of a personal favorite of mine rather than great all around weapon.

I know the base damage is too low to really compete w/ other weapons. I think it may take slightly less endurance per swing so you might be able to get a longer combo off.

Sometimes in a pvp duel, using a seldom used weapon can give you an edge because your enemy may not be familiar with the move set, range, stunlock etc.

If you're looking to get serious with pvp try this http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/954345-demons-souls/faqs/59592. It is the most detailed, in-depth guide I've seen. Give some attention to the back stabbing portion, as there are tutorials on advanced back stab techniques. Not only to learn how to execute them, but it also handy to recognize these techniques to gauge the caliber of an opponent.

This is going to be the best game of the year after Skyrim.. can't wait.

Though they're very different games I forsee these to titles in heavy rotation on my console. Damn this fall/winter is going to be so awesome for gaming.

I almost want to push you off a bridge for saying it's a JRPG.

By definition, an RPG itself can't be technically classified (it can under certain criteria) due to the fact, any game in which you assume the role of a character (being EVERY GAME EVER MADE) would be a 'role-playing game'.

However, JRPG's are very, VERY distinctive, and are not even remotely classified the same as normal RPGs. I'd suggest looking up some examples of what JRPG's actually are to compare it to.

Evidently the campfire, known as the beacon fire, is our mobile spawn point as well as a multiplayer hub, for both co-op and competitive.
