did you buy a 360 just for Skyrim?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:35 pm

Was thinking of buying a PC on DigitalStorm. Need one at <1100$

Any recommendations? I love MMO's and games like Skyrim and need something to run these without issues.

I've been an Xbox owner since '01 or '02. Morrowind on the original, and Oblivion and Skyrim on the 360. Also, I've owned all the expansion packs for those three games. I was actually a hardcoe PS2 really devoted fan who hated on Xbox constantly when it first came out, but then my dad brought home the big black box with its bearclaw controllers, and being the giant game nerd I am, started playing Halp:CE. And I've been sold on the box ever since.

I bought my 360 for GTA4. My PC back then was used mainly for reports and such, didn't do much gaming at all. Boy how that's changed in the last year and a bit... Feel like a teenager again.

^ Because the 360 controller actually fits human hands. The PS3 controller is just weird feeling.

I have a pc and a ps3, i love the ps3 but only for certain titles and of course lovefilm :P

The pc in my opinion will always be the favoured platform for mmos and rpgs (my opinion again) because it lends itself to that kind of play. I just cant see the pc market going anywhere especially with all the mmos coming out soon. Not everyone likes that type of game but it has always been my preferred platform. I will always play games like portal 2 on the ps3 though.
This confuses me.

You pay more for the same game with less control?

LOL, did you suffer from cognitive dissonance when purchasing your platform of choice?

You don't suffer from it when you buy your platform of choice. You suffer from it after a while :P

By the way most people suffer from cognitive dissonance to some extent. The procedure is something like this:
- you desire something
- you buy that thing
- you have a feeling that you made the wrong choice (this is called buyer's remorse)
- this causes cognitive dissonance
- you reduce the dissonance by either criticizing the product you didn't choose or by becoming very biased to thinking that you made the right choice, despite any contrary evidence

As I said in that post, this topic is very similar to religion. There was a study which examined the brain activity of Apple users. It turned out that the same areas of their brain showed activity when they saw pictures of Apple product as when religious pictures were shown to religious people.

The process is very similar so that's why arguing about this topic doesn't go anywhere because both sides are very biased to their choice of platform due to the above mentioned things. But it's entertaining and quality food for trolling and flaming just like iPhone vs Android, Windows vs Linux, etc. :P

Good choice on the 360 sir. I am a PC and 360 gamer myself. Check out Fable 2 and then Fable 3(in that order)... Also Splinter Cell: Conviction.
More people have 360s and there is a better online community than steam or ps3.

I play Skyrim and some other games on my PC though, mostly for the better graphics, reduced load times and tons of mods.

Dude, never buy a PC already built. Just build it yourself man! It is not too hard and you will get about five times the power per dollar.

This thread is just going to boil over with pigheaded platform wars...

Word up.

I bought the xbox 360 because its cheap. I'll happily play it with the knowledge that I spend my extra £££'s on something more worthwhile than a superXTRA-mega-GTR-totallyraqe graphics card

Its all about the gameplay anyways

Why would you buy a 360 over a PS3/PC?

Not really. Which ever one you use more feels normal. To me, the XBOX controller just seems freakin FAT. (well it is, thats not just me)

Yes, I did, actually.
I'm a looooong time pc gamer and have never owned a console. But when it was announced the pc version would have Steam, that tipped my hand.
I stopped getting Total War games after M2 and I'll not get any that require Steam. Same goes for TES series. Period and non-negotiable.
My reasoning is quite simple: I have a very high end beast rig I built and it remains isolated from the web. Nothing is put onto its HDD unless I port it over via usb stick. There is simply no way I'm going to allow Steam to peer within my drives. My rig is not their concern.

Gaming-wise, though, I'm fine with playing TESV on a 360.
I'll still enjoy the game...and the knowledge that my beast and all it's modded glory is comfortably isolated.

Not a big issue

PC is the ultimate best experience, have an xbox as well that my brother uses but PC graphics are much better.

According to this:

http://www.ngohq.com/news/20889-microsoft-sold-almost-one-million-xbox-360s-last-week.html

Xbox360 sales increased by olmost a million, i think it had something to do with Skyrim and those 2 Point and Clic FPS (MW3 & BF3).

So instead, you go to a closed-system that is even more restrictive than Steam. If you think Steam is bad, XBox Live is worse. At least on the PC, developers have a choice as to which online service to use. And you can mod games and install whatever you want on your computer.

In fact, you might as well not even use the pronoun "My" with the XBox because it's really not your XBox, it's Microsoft's XBox and they are just letting you use it.

Skyrim is a singleplayer game, play it through once then u done, no mods can change that

You've obviously never played these games on pc or you would never say that!

Because those toys are much cheaper than PCs, guess they cant afford it or have no pc knowledges. They can learn if they wanna to and need patience.

Patience. This is a strange word nowadays and something that the younger generation lacks. They want stuff NOW and don't want to fiddle with anything. That is why consoles are doing so well.

360 costs 200 dollars or less when on sale, NEW. Can gaming PCs capable of running Skyrim at the level of an xbox360 cost 200 dollars or less new? Then, how much will a monitor, with keyboard and mouse cost? People who buy 360s already own TVs 99% of the time, however, the number is far less for those buying PCs to assume they already own all the needed perihperals.

I'd wager thats why a lot of people choose 360.

Not as expensive as you think. I got my system about 2 years ago. Quad 4 Phenom, 4GB ram, 9500 GT video card as barebones. All of that cost me about $280-300? Already had my monitor, sound card and razer naga mouse (which allows customizing favorites ON THE FRIKKEN BUTTONS!) It's awesome!

Enjoying the game is much more important than the platform you choose to play it on.

Don't get me wrong it will be a sad day when PC gaming falls by the wayside but make no mistake that day is coming.

It will indeed, because the only remaining driving force for the development of new consoles will be the game developers.
It will indeed, because the companies who manufacturer the graphics chip sets will have far fewer resources and no opportunity to test out ideas on 6 to 12 monthly cycle.
It will indeed, because the companies who manufacturer the cpus will have far fewer resources and no opportunity to test out ideas on 6 to 12 monthly cycle.
It will indeed, because the companies who manufacturer memory and other components will have far fewer resources and no opportunity to test out ideas on 6 to 12 monthly cycle.
It will indeed, because the totally unrestricted world of independent development will become subject to the whims and restrictions of big business.
It will indeed, because the ability to play classic old games will be subject to the level backward compatibility dictated by big business.
It will indeed, because the the likes of Good Old Games (gog) offering guaranteed to run versions of games up to and over 20 years old will be out of business.
It will indeed, because indy devs will no longer be offered a return of 70% of the sales value of their games.
It will indeed, because the price of PCs will increase and their relative performance will decrease.
It will indeed, because there will no longer be and abundance of free tools to manipulate game audio and graphic files which will stifle mods as well as indy game development.
It will indeed, because the the higher PC prices and reduction in available tools will reduce the number of up and coming game devs.
It will indeed, because fewer tools, higher resource costs and smaller pool of devs will reduce the diversity and quality of the games that are produced.

Finally, it will indeed because, to the best of my knowledge, all games be they Wii, XBox, PS3 or PC are actually designed, coded and compiled on PCs.

As it stands right now Nintendo, SONY, MS in particular and all of us gamers need a PC gaming industry and for a diverse, thriving and forward looking games industry of the future we need the PC gaming industry to survive.
