Does anyone sometimes just `walk`?

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:35 pm

Carrying a couple hundred pounds of gear? No, you can't run all day. However, I know Ultra Marathoners who run for 24 hours pretty much non stop in their races. Of course they are not going to go into battle after that. So, let's say that running all day is improbable.

Well there is yomping. Which is used in the army to half run, half march long distances with a full pack and still fight at the end of it. So improbable is a better term than impossible, I agree.

One thing I've really grown to enjoy about playing this game with a 360 controller is the fluid change in movement speeds. Using the stick it is so easy to transition from a slow creep to a fast pace. This is the first time I've played one of Bethesda's games on a console (Old computer now) so I wasn't sure how it was going to go but I've really come to enjoy using the controller for movement. It's great to stroll along side NPC's that I have to follow matching their walking speed perfectly. It's also fun when I'm in a dungeon and want to creep slowly into a room to see what's in it. The range of movement speed is so much better than the on/off of the keyboard. Eventually I'll go back to the PC when I upgrade so I can use mods but I may just stick with the controller even then. I walk a lot now but it happens so naturally I don't really have to think about it.

Totally agree with this. My speed varies quite a lot depending on what I'm doing and the flexibility offered by the controller is great.

Now I know most of us who travel the countryside, etc usually run. I do. I can understand how hard it is to walk for such a long way, but do you ever really just walk?

There are times I will walk.

1.Every time I come up to a town entrance I will stop and walk into the gate. Don`t seem right to shoot past the guards.
2. When I enter a new town for the 1st time I`ll walk just to take in the atmos like the heros in movies do.
3. I`ll walk if entering a dungeon until I know it`s safe.
4. I`ll walk to view anything interesting like a huge ominous statue somewhere or a beautiful flowing waterfall.

I suppose for me it`s a little roleplaying and making things immersive for myself. And it`s a kind of reverence, just running through everything like a flea on fire seems disrepectful of all that`s before us to see.

I am guilty of those four points, except that for point 3 I will sneak into a dungeon as opposed to walk. My characters are sneaky by nature.

For point 1 and 2 I will also make sure to sheat my weapon (as well as when talking to NPCs - unless I want to intimidate them). When I slay a dragon I will also always sheat my weapon right after while absorbing their souls, with the other lowlife NPCs in awe of my accomplishments: "That's right you milk drinkers, I just absorbed its soul. Watch me in all my glory." lol

I walk everywhere. Somehow I prefer walking to running, except in some cases.

No. In fact, I've taken a liking to a certain spell from the Midas Magic mod that makes you run like Speedy Gonzales on Red Bull.

Yes, I walked from whiterun to solitude yesterday. It was fun, taking in the scenery, not trying to rush from point a to point b.

I never fast travel and always walk: dungeons, towns, wilderness. I only run if it fits into my RP; for example, if I'm trying to catch up to someone and it's important or I'm trying to get away from an enemy. Running everywhere just breaks my immersion. I will take the carriages on occasion.

Incidentally, this is probably one of the reasons why I don't have a lot of difficulty doing quests without quest markers. I've had a lot of time to study the landscape, so I'm pretty familiar with it. I walk between Riften and Whiterun all the time; been up to High Hrothgar a few times, etc. I've logged a lot of hours but I don't level very fast.

Great thread! I walk quite a bit! Usually indoors when talking to people or doing interactions. I hate slamming into stuff in a store and being yelled at for knocking it over.
I'll also walk up to the shout walls, or in temples and quiet places. I'll walk alot in dungeons too, it really adds to the suspence and immersion to be creeping around in those spooky places.

Also, if I am travelling somewhere and have to do something at my desk, I will usually put an auto-walk on and point my guy in a general direction. I listen in case something heats up, actionwise.

I usually walk in 3rd person whenever i get new armor but most of the time i just run in 1st, as i feel that 3rd person breaks the immersion
and its a bit clumsy while playing as a mage.

I walk in cities and towns. Also, I walk with my bow in hand in areas I've never been to.

Yeah I like to walk alot when I am exploring or in town and in third person. Makes the game feel much more immersive IMO also.

I'd like to walk everywhere, but being a theif, i die quick..so i just fast travel
Why does everyone say thieves are weak? I use an orc thief / assassin and I have no problem walking places, just put a lot of points into your health, you only need SO much stamina....

And back to the original post, i walk through towns a lot of the time, and same as you, when I just get somewhere, cuz there are those scripted moments.

I find that I can't catch up to butterflies if I walk, so usually I run everywhere. Sometimes I ride, but my horses tend to die a lot. 1000 septims for 2 pounds of horsemeat just isn't very cost effective.l

I remember once when I was in Whiterun and thought...."Look at all these kids running around"....Oh wait... :blush2:
Yes. That's what you look like to everybody else.

I only walk when I'm in an Inn or sometimes in other interiors. Or sometimes when I'm following random characters on the road...like the mercenery who's investigaing trouble or sometimes to annoy soldiers or Thalmor.
I (almost) always run outdoors otherwise.

Haha, I do almost the exact same thing. When the atmosphere calls for it, I walk. I try and walk in town (looks kind of funny seeing a huge Nord wuth a gigantic axe tearing through the streets), but sometimes I just forget it.

I walked all the way from High Hrothgar past Helgen following the Imperial delegation. Did you know they kill every guard in Ivarstead? And Elenwen is super powerful. Her magic was killing everything in one shot.

I walk in towns and in places where I want to slow down and take in the view. There are so many breathtaking views in this game that I sometimes just stop in my tracks and look around.

I only walk in two instances:

1. When I am in the middle of a quest and the quest-giver is also walking (e.g. Mirabelle Ervine showing me to my quarters.)

2. I am over my encumbrance limit.
