Does Bethesda have any direct competition?

I don't know. New Vegas gives me the impression that Obsidian isn't really interested in creating open world games, and still prefer more structured story focused ones. That's why there are deathclaws directly north of the starting area, so on every New Vegas playthrough you walk almost the same route through Primm, Nipton, Novac, etc. with some distractions on the side.

Plus Bethesda likes to weave little stories in the world itself using props and such (eg, a dead necromancer slumped over a table with an open coffin with the lid on the floor standing behind him, a skeleton trapped beneath a bolder, a helmet and book hidden inside a log, etc) to make exploring worthwhile, which was very much lacking in New Vegas (as well as the vast majority of open-world games).

TES is a great open-world RPG series, but it definitely lacks complexity/depth. I would never consider it the "epitome of role playing".

Particularly in quests/factions and dialogue. There's usually only one way to complete them, one option to choose, one way for your character to react, etc, with almost none of it taking things like skills or character background into account. That's one thing Obsidian definitely did right in New Vegas.
