Dragon Riding [merged topics]

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:08 pm

I think it's a good idea, but it just was not executed properly. For example, I was under the impression that you would be controlling the Dragon and fly wherever you wanted to go. After I found out you could not do this, I at least thought you would be able to fast travel somewhere and fly there on your Dragon instead of "warping" there. I think the rest of the DLC is really fun, and this is the only problem I have with it. What do you think?

What I don't understand...is after I've been riding the dragon, I tell it to land, and blooming thing then starts attacking me after I get off it! They should of made it that it will either stay there and fight from the ground for you, or help from the skies for a bit then fly off!

The reason you cant free roam the dragon is most likely becuse of engine & hardware (consoles) limitations and nothing else.

Basicly, i belive they would have to remake and optimize aloot of the engine code to allow you to free roam with a dragon (since just sprinting with a horse for to long brings up small loading freezes).

The probability that they would remake the engine code on a game that has gone gold is allmost to small to even consider. (i think its more likely to be hit by lightning)

However, its likely doable on the pc (as a mod for example).

this
people need to realize the engine has limits, especially when working on consoles
yes itd be fun to be able to control the dragon movements
but in doing so, you would seriously tax to engine to the point where itd crash pretty much constantly trying to speed-load cells
so is it as fun as it could be if engine/hardware restraints werent an issue? no
is it more fun in its limited form like it is now, than constantly crashing your game like manual fly-anywhere-in-real-time gameplay would cause? yes
maybe a mod on the pc if its a complete beast of a machine
but not happening on consoles sorry

Well Todd Howard said himself that they would not implement dragon riding into the game unless they could do it properly. Being able to ride on the back of one with absolutely no control... I would not call that properly. It's just a tease of the greatness that it could have achieved.

I would have been much happier if they had just left it out so that I wouldn't be sitting there wishing that it wasn't such a pointless waste of time that they could have spent making animations for, say, spears, or another quest, or anything really. It's that much worse too, because they gave you a brief taste of how much fun steering and controlling them actually is and then when you're all stoked to go try it
out somewhere in the world it's just a giant let down.

If it is a case of engine limitations then they shouldn't have even included it because this is just another case of getting everyones hopes up and then having them crash down around us.

I'm not saying that I myself am that upset about it (I am admittedly a little miffed which is why I'm here writing this) but this is the kind of thing that makes the community go into a mass uproar and then every comment you read about Skyrim is about "how much I hate Bethesda for not catering to my every will and whim".

I still think Skyrim is one of the best games there ever was or will be, but I disagree with with how they implemented this feature. I think it was more or less just giving in to the demands of people in the Skyrim community asking for it which Bethesda shouldn't have to do.

WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE
Spoiler
This is BY FAR the most disappointing thing that has ever been in an Elder Scrolls game! I am an avid Elder Scrolls player and have been since I played Morrowind and it stole my heart. It has been well over a decade that I have been playing this series and it is in my opinion the best RPG series ever created. Everything else pales in comparison to the incredible lore that they have created as well as the open-ended world and the freedom to do what you please is what makes this series stand above the rest. Now when you go and promise things in a video game you have to be able to deliver, something Bethesda has never really had a problem with, until this. The rest of the DLC was phenomenal; the realms of Hermaeus Mora were a twisted marvel to behold.[BTW- I am glad to see more on the Daedric lord of forbidden knowledge! THANK YOU !] As well as the story behind Miraak and everything else was on par, if not above, what we've come to expect with the series. I wish the dragon riding, as it stands now(current implementation), should not have made the final cut into the expansion because you have no control over the beast that you have tamed and it didn't even play an integral role within the quest or story for that matter(other than riding to the top of Miraaks tower). And that (control) is the main driving force, other than lore, freedom of choice and storytelling, behind a game like this. I hope for us, the fans, that this issue will be resolved, for we are the sole purpose of this games creation and I truly believe that this feature, if you could call it that, feels unnecessary, useless and just tacked on last minute without any thought.(Eventhough I know that is not true, that is just the way that it feels)

I am unsure, as we all are, as whether the decision to implement this feature, in the way that you guys went about it, was in fact due to limitations within the Creation engine or not. It just seems to me that there was something holding you back because I cannot see that this is how you had envisioned something as epic as this. I knew going into this expansion that I was going to be disappointed with the dragon riding, mainly due to the amount of hype. I knew there was going to be a catch and/or drawback to it, such as (hint, hint) only being able to do it once a day or for a limited amount of time, or(and this is what i speculated) that you would only be able to do it on Solstheim. (the reason that I thought that you would only being able to do it in Solstheim was I knew it was going to be either EXTREMELY difficult or impossible to add a feature as massive as that into the game world as it stands) I did not, however, foresee that it was going to feel so constrained that it was not even enjoyable. And that, for me, is one of the biggest questions you must ask yourself as a game maker: Is this enjoyable? Is it something that we are proud of? If the answer is no or if you are even unsure, then it is something that you should take out of the game. You don't want to just give the players what they want if you cannot do it to the best of your ability. And even if it is done to the best of your ability, if its not enjoyable then it ultimately must be scrapped.

One of the hardest things to do when creating a game or anything for a game is to not be too overambitious. Over ambition is a double edged sword within the game industry as well as any other creative outlet for that matter. It is what creates the best but also what can either hinder or even destroy the best. This is extremely difficult because you want to try new things to push the limits and/or boundaries of what is either commonplace or what is believed to not be possible within the scope of either current capabilities do to technological constraints or something that has never been implemented well or even at all. There are many more reasons but I feel that those listed above are the most relevant and major ones. Also, trying to please everyone is NEVER going to happen, so you must take it upon yourself to do what you feel is the right move for your game as a whole, despite what others may say. I do think that you guys are the best(other than indie companies, I'm talkin' AAA only) in terms of listening to your fan base and what they want, then delivering. This is a very tricky thing though as you want to do it right so that it doesn't fall flat. Another reason why this had to be so beyond what we could possibly fathom, is the amount of hype that was around this.

On a lighter note I do believe that this DLC is by far the best that we've seen in Skyrim, even coming close to The Shivering Isles for Oblivion. Still, however, Morrowind reigns supreme! lol. I still love you guys and hope to see more DLC from you coming to us in the near or distant future. Doesn't matter when as long as it comes! May the blessings of the Nine Divines be upon you!

This man found a glitch of some sorts that allowed his dragon to enter some sort of free roam mode.... You'll find it here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qq95EE5pf-k
Don't mind the quality, just pay attention and stay to the end or at least get the gist of it.

Can some one else besides us confirm this? This bug seems to activate when the dragon rises high into the atmosphere..

Note: you still cannot control it, but you won't be flying in sporadic circles with this bug activated.

OP: No, you're not the only one. I absolutely love the DLC, best TES DLC yet, IMO. But when I look at dragon riding, I'm like, "Why? Why even bother if this is the result?" I do have to clarify that mine is VERY unpredictable. Sometimes buttons just won't work, although A always does, thankfully.

As far as "free roaming"... It's possible. I took a trip clear across Skyrim (Markarth/Riften) by target surfing. So, straight lining 2D directional roaming, 100% possible.

For some reason, "my" dragon flew to the Throat of the World. It was a pretty cool glitch.

Why? A lot of people wanted dragon mounts. This gave them what they asked for without spending an enormous amount of time devoted to it that IMHO they wisely spent on the rest of the DLC. It's a very tiny part of the DLC and really takes nothing away from the rest of it. Doesn't add a lot but it at least was a nod to those wanting dragon mounts to say, we heard you and here is a chance to look at the world from atop the ferris wheel. I figure if I don't care for it I can just try it and skip it.

LOL, yeah, was more rhetorical "Why?" than anything. Funny thing, when clients ask for some package alterations, I say the same thing to myself, "Why?" To me, it makes no sense to half-do a report project that produces erroneous fudge-numbers because you don't want to supply data. But, yeah, people want things like that, so, we do it, keep the clients happy. ;)

As I said, though, most of my problems with it being in there is that it doesn't work, as intended, better than half the time for me. Maybe 1 in every 5 rides, all buttons work. The other four... sometimes I can't open the menu, sometimes I can't ready or use spells, sometimes the dragon won't respond to attack commands, and sometimes it will attack targets without being told to do so. (The last two might be as intended, but given my button nonresponsiveness in 80% of my rides, I don't think so.)

If those issues were fixed, though, I'd still find target surfing to get somewhere pretty tedious. I think just about everyone who doesn't like dragon riding as it is would do a turn around if even just 2D control was added, and nothing more. I know I might even actually use it if control was there (and buttons worked).

I don't see whats so wrong with it? It's a lot better then I thought it was going to be, and at this very moment, I am riding a frost dragon, which i fast traveled to another dragon peak and started a dog fight with another frost dragon, which ventured far away enough to pick up a blood dragon into the fight, which ventured over ANOTHER dragon peak to pick up ANOTHER dragon into the fight. So here I am, flying and casting frost spells as 4 dragons are fighting each other in the sky... I don't exactly see how this is bad or unwanted.

How would you even control a dragon? Jam a steering column in the back of it's head.

Honestly, I had fun with the limited control.
Going back to skyrim, finding a dragon and tearing him through a bandit fort feels pretty bad ass.

The lock on aiming can be a bit tedious some times and the whole experience eats up memory on the xbox like no tomorrow.
That said, I would like at the very very least, the ability to change direction.
Trying to lock on to another dragon was almost impossible when my dragon kept flying down to attack a mudcrab.

My xbox nearly crashed in a fight with another dragon between shearpoint and that mage tower nearby. Its possible but you really see the limitations.

Being able to fly anywhere you like would be contradicting the aspects of the game. It has the same concept as Oblivion where every time you enter a new area, it has to load that area. Saying it would be impossible to do would be a lie, however i believe it would take a lot of time for a fully working product and it definitely won't be free- maybe a 400 Microsoft points buy and the equivalent to Ps3 players. I do hope that it's something the game makers and editors look into as it genuinely would be such a great addition, that being said though it could cause lots of problems with loading speed, unpredictable crashing and lag.

I think they did as much as they could/needed to. They did something that consoles can handle ( hopefully if talos is watching then maybe even the ps3 ) and has given the neccisary animations scripting ect to allow it to be fully done by console modders. Its the same thing as hearthfire. They implemented at least some form of player based mod ( as in the 'idea') to give something to consoles.

I think it was mostly added as a feature for modders. They never really meant dragon riding to be for the consoles because of how weak they are. But anybody with a decent PC would be able to install a mod that allows free control of dragons.

You will never be able to control a dragon, the most Beth would do is add navigation markers and the dragon would fly there. Most likely they will do NOTHING about it though.
