Dwarves!

I don't think dwemer were actually any shorter than the other races. Don't think anyone called them 'dwarves' while they were still around.

Aren't Dwarves just human-sized elves?
I recall reading somewhere that they are called "dwarves" because the first people they encountered were giants who refered to them as short becasue they were shorter than them.

The giants of Skyrim. That's how they got the name in the first place...

BTW, this is how a Dwemer looks like, so we can get this over with: http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120107003841/elderscrolls/images/thumb/3/3b/MW-Dwemer.png/268px-MW-Dwemer.png

well..... Thats dumb
Well, you get over that fast if you find out through the lore who they were and what they tried to do which eventually made them go extinct. Dwarves are overrated anyway :P I'm more interested in the Akavir folk, especially the vampiric serpent ones and Tosh Raka, the ruler of the cat people.

Besides that, wasn't there a (ghost of a?) dwemer in Morrowind somewhere? I don't remember, it's been so long ...

Could be interesting if they returned as the antagonists in the next installment.

Not all the Dwemer are gone. I could tell you exactly where to find one.

We don’t know if he survived the red mountain exploding. We also can’t extrapolate how dwarves looked, because of that individuals “condition”. Even if that that individual survived the horrific events that took place in Morrowind there is a chance that he completely lost his mind by now. Thus not very useful having him around, as I am sure was intended by the developers.

It's not entirely implausible to have some deity or ever bring back the possibility to bring the Dwemer genepool back into play. But it would be a bit of a push.

Sadly, given some of Skyrim's aesthetic makeovers for certain races, I think if the Dwemer WERE brought back they'd probably look a lot more like what people would generally expect of a fantasy Dwarf.

Kind of lame if they go the "we thought they were gone but guess who's back with a vengeance" way for a second straight time. Would be the same story as the dragons.

but it would also be more uninteresting because the dragons are all demi-gods (i think) and all the dwemer are just simple mer

In-game books DO refer to them as Dwarves, though.

That's like complaining that Bosmers or Altmers are called 'Elves'.

Or Orsimers 'Orcs'.

They're just not Dwarves in size or stature.

 I weep, Poor TES.

No the seperations of Orcs being Orcs and Altmers being called Elves are NOT the same as Dwarves and Dwemer.

Dwarves is not even an elven term in TES, its Giantish. They were Called DWEMER DEEP FOLK/ELVES I.E in Mind in THOUGHT, they are not a race of height challanged Drunkards with a fetish for Stones, The DWEMER are a badass God pwning race of roflstompers who've struck fear in ever race they come across. they are not coming back via known information.

Dwarves is a corruption, and should have been addressed more because this is exactly the outcome of what people think when they see the word Dwarves. Short loud alcholics

Yep
Dwarf is the name they are commonly called. A scholar might call them Dwemer but the average person in Tamriel would call them dwarves

They are not extinct, they are gone missing under unclear circumstances. And whatever goes away, eventually come back. Long-gone races have already started making their comeback (see dragons), dwarves seem to be the best bet for the next comeback...

The circumstances are not unclear.
Morrowind gave a lot of clues as to their fate and later on dev's confirmed what fans had pieced together.
The Dwemer became one with Numidium, they became its golden skin between the mundane and the divine.
They cannot come back because their entire race became part of a big giant stompy robot that blew up.

I predict that when Bethesda eventually does involve Dwarves in an Elder Scrolls game, they will make them short. It's be even parts ignoring their established lore and making up reasons why the dwarves shrank, but they'll do it, because the casuals could be confused by anything else. Come on, it's not like they haven't fiddled with the rest of their lore for the benefit of the mass market: Cyrodiil anyone?

Sadly true.

I suppose it's not entirely implausible that one of TES' deities were to re-create them in some fashion, though. Which would also allow for an aesthetic redesigning.

But any hope that what befall them could just be 'undone' is a foolish hope indeed. They won't just re-appear.

I suspect that when the guys were coming up with the mythos way back when they were in college or whatever, probably they just had high elves, wood elves, dark elves, orcs, lizardmen, and dwarves pretty much like they all are in D&D. Then at some point they came up with more comprehensive lore and decided that D&D dwarves didn't fit, so they changed them around, but unfortunately were stuck with the name "dwarves" which they had to explain away. Could be wrong, but I just cynically assumed that's kind of how it went.

Exactly. Expect some short, alcoholic, angry, bearded, steam-punk fanatics to pop up in TES VI ;)

You really can't think of an excuse to bring them back?

"Thirty dwarves were doing research in a realm of Oblivion when the tools were used and the heart was pierced. Those thirty dwarves returned to find their people vanished, and their Falmer slaves running amok. They sealed themselves in one of their deepest cities to protect themselves from the Falmer, and in the thousands of years since have grown to a sizable population. Also, they are shorter now because thousands of years and a bottlenecked population can do that."

Boom. Dwarves.
