Is it a static object or can you interact with it at all?
Also, if you look carefully, can you see any seems in the model or texture that might indicate how it opens (?)

Personally, I think it has some connection to the Aethirium forge. It kinda seems that Beth is adding small Dwemer hints in the DLC's (not hearthfire)
has anyone tried approching it with Aethirium in their inventory?

I wonder if the Aetherium Staff would do anything? Maybe an alternate effect when in the presence of the machine? Maybe the Summoned Dwemer Construct does something special? Or maybe just using the Staff is a trigger for something?

Now that I think about it, although you don't necessarily have to take my word for it since I'm a PC user and don't have an Xbox so I only have the images provided by other users to go by, I am convinced that this machine does nothing.

However, and we won't truly know the answer to this until that day comes, what if this could be a very obscure hint to either the next DLC or the next Elder Scrolls game?

I doubt Bethesda is going to put in a clue that was quite blatantly a reference to Oblivion in Bloodmoon.

If I am somehow right that this machine is simply a foreshadowing of future events, whether they are depicted in another DLC or even in Elder Scrolls VI, then that doesn't mean we'll be returning to this particular machine in this guy's basemant.

However there could be similar ones, ones that function and perhaps open up to reveal their secrets.

It really depends on the scale of my theory - if it's the return of the Dwemer, but on a small scale, perhaps that would fit in a DLC. But if the return is a large scale event that encompasses an entire province, it might be Elder Scrolls VI.

Or, one could always hope, that there is something in the middle where the whole of Morrowind is added as part of a massive expansion to Skyrim. That's just wishful thinking.

I digress, the topic is whether this is an unfinished quest, or something more.

Found a boat, found some blood, but not his body....
The Dwemers took him away!!!111!!!!111one!

Hroldulf's body vanishes a lot. With no explanation.

OMG. He HAS been absorbed into the immaterial Dwemer hive mind!

When I first saw this I thought that this looked like an interrogation room. Small room with a chair and desk facing this sphere and the mention that he had heard voices. I figured it was some sort of device used to communicate with something. I didn't give it much thought but having read these threads, personally, I wonder if it has something to do with the Skaal? I remember that the shaman had that bit of dialogue saying that the All-Maker had taught the Skaal how to communicate with the Earth or elements. I wondered if this was meant to be another one of those dwemer devices meant to do something in an unconventional way like the device in Blackreach used to read an Elder Scroll. Like this device would be used to commune with the elements or the earth; that might explain the voices from the deep. *shrug*

Also someone mentioned a buggy torch in the previous thread I think, one that didn't stack with the other torches. I think I picked that torch up, I know I got it earlier in Dragonborn and this place was the first place I got to after I had visited Raven Rock for the first time. It had a value of "0" and a weight of "0". I think something had to have been done to the torch by the devs in the first place, like a script or half finished script, to have caused it to bug out. I don't think changing the weight and value could have caused it to bug out, so that might just imply that it is a half finished quest.

I may have hit upon something here, unless I'm completely missing something. I didn't completely read through the previous two threads, but I did skim them, so pardon me if it's been mentioned before.

Just a few minutes ago, I was a little bored, so I made a save and decided to go on a murdering spree in Skaal Village. When I killed Fanari Strong-Voice a quest update popped up stating, "Failed: Kill the leader of Hrodulf's House." I didn't remember ever seeing such a quest, so I jumped on the ol' Google Machine, which lead me to this series of threads, and a few other random threads on some other boards. After skimming them all, I didn't see any mention of this particular development.

So maybe a quest we haven't found the activation for . . . or an unfinished quest?

Wait! I just remembered. The chief of the Skaal gives out bandit missions. There are bandits in Hrodulf's House. Sorry, dead end again.

Though this could be Skyrims version of Fallout 3's Dunwhich Obelisk. It was just there at first but was expanded on in a later expansion (Point Lookout)
Good theory but won't happen as this isn't in vanilla Skyrim. DLCs typically don't rely on one another's content.

Ah, darn. Somehow I've never seen any of those quests. And I didn't see any active for killing the leader of Hrodulf's House when I looked in my Quest Log. Odd.

Well, crap. Sorry for the interruption then! Go about your normal business, nothing to see here, etc.

I didn't know the Chief gave out bandit missions? Learn something new every day :) As for the find, kudos to you, but obviously been solved already ;)

I think the Dwemer machine is possibly a time portal.

Perhaps what happens is that the Dovahkiin goes crazy trying to figure out what exactly the machine is doing and becomes a thrall of Hermaeus Mora in the process. Eventually Hermaeus Mora opens the device, which is really a time portal to ancient times and the Dovahkiin steps through it and becomes the evil Miraak. He chooses not to defeat Alduin at the time because his mind has grown to be quite insane.

In other words, in Dragonborn we are fighting a version of ourselves that got svcked into a time portal into the distant past and became an insane thrall of Hermaeus Mora. Female Dovahkiins would have a six change while going through the portal using some strange Dwemer magic.

Has anyone tried opening all three Elder Scrolls, while dropping all five of the bug jars in the room, while having a character that possesses a handlebar mustache, while simultaneously pressing Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B and A? If not, that could be the trick to opening it.

she has a quest to kill bandits at a random location
your game probably picked that locale when you entered a cell with her (some random quest choose the destination upon being in a cell with a npc, not when the actual quest starts)
so thats probably just where she wouldve sent you had you initiated the quest, to kill the bandits and nothing more
nothing really big

Maybe there is some potion we have to drink that is unique like vaemarina's trippy dream drug. Or possibly the same way we opened the portal to Soul Cairn.

P.S. Has anyone tries using the staff that controlls Dwemer bots.

A hidden reward for purchasing at least two DLCs and being psychic?
I'd love to see that. The outrage would likely keep me entertained for days.

I can't believe y'all are still talking about this! LOL I still don't think it is anything but WYSIWYG. There is nothing further according to the local map. It appears to end right behind the thing. To me, it looks like just a "cap" on a pipe like in Dwemer ruins. Plus, the fact that the bottom part of the cap is partially covered by stone, makes me think that it is not meant to be a "doorway" to anywhere. The journal and letter make an intriguing story, but the fact that Hrodulf and his partner are found dead also makes me think that is the end of it. If Hrodulf was just missing instead of dead, I would think that it was a hidden quest, although it seems like we would get a pop-up in our quest log.

I really hope that my theory is wrong and pc players find something different when they get this DLC. I will have to wait to see, but will be following this topic going forward. Meanwhile, I hope y'all enjoy discussing it and trying different things, as for me, I am just happy with the loot from the chest.

I found this too though dismissed it after I made a follower sit in it and it didn' make any sound.

Glad to see my recent constant use of WYSIWYG is spreading :D
