Is Fallout New Vegas going to be considered canon

At the very least we can agree it's semi-canon. The main story is canon. The locations are canon. Only the oil drums are not canon. I don't see why that makes it semi-canon. I say it's because people can't get over Van Buren being cancelled.

To me Van Buren is not Canon because it was never made. It's not even semi-canon. The Devs of New Vegas have said that New Vegas is not Van Buren. Only small parts will be used and even then those parts will be updated and changed to fit the new timeline set by Bethesda when they made their Fallout 3.

"Because each game of the Fallout series was created by a different development team and the plot and dialogues were created by mostly different people each time around, there are numerous inconsistencies between them and the canonicity of each game is a point of contention between various Fallout fans. For example, in case of inconsistency between games, some fans might consider newer entries in the series to override the older ones, while others might consider the original lore to still be "true" and inconsistencies to be mistakes on the part of the later titles' developers. Even various developers of one game might disagree on what holds true in the games' setting: for example, Tim Cain and Chris Taylor have different views on the origins of ghouls."

Only thing beside the oil that Tactics messes with is Van Buren. It messes with Van Buren alot. Again Van Buren not made so therefore not Canon!. So Tactics can't mess with it.

Anyways like you said this could go on for ever. I just know I have been playing Fallout since it first came out and I don't need the wiki to tell me everything (not a shot at you I know it shoulds like one). :foodndrink:

I've been playing since the first Fallout too :) The only Fallout game I haven't played is Fallout Brotherhood of Steel as I don't have a console (I'm rubbish with a gamepad lol). I just use the wiki as a backup as such, it's our only verifiable source really

I don't understand why everything thinks that Obsidian is the full original team (fallout 2), there isn't even a third or a quarter of the original team working on it >.> That doesn't bother me at all, but it sure seems to muddle the issue. As previously stated, Bethesda decides what is and isn't canon so i would say it's a moot point anyway.

True but the wiki can't be trusted 100%. It's the same reason why when doing a project for college or what ever the first thing the teachers say (or should say) don't use the wiki! :D.

. Again Tactics no longer has that semi-canon tag. It just has that "some parts may contradict canon" such as the oil drums.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_canon

Fallout Tactics is considered semi-canon: major events are canon (and are referenced in Fallout 3), but some details are not[1]. As part of the Fallout Tactics release, Fallout: Warfare has the same level of canonicity.

"Fallout canon are the things considered to be an official part of the Fallout universe."

Yeah I used the wiki for it's definition ;)

And yes Giliant, Bethesda are in full control of the canon now.

Canon is considered the "genuine" or "official" accepted material for a storyline.

I am some what happy that people say it's at least semi-canon. My point is and IMO it's full canon. "major events are canon (and are referenced in Fallout 3)" Major evens like the main story the locations the factions but one little thing like the oil drums makes it only semi-canon  ? IMO it's full canon. One small problem should not make it only part canon. By that logic FO3 is only part canon because the mole rats are different and the robots are different and the gauss rifle is different the PA is different the Stealth boys are different as well as the ghouls. Now I am not saying FO3 is only semi-canon it's full canon but the fans have forgiven the changes. So why can't people get over the damn oil drums in tactics? Anyways I have said what I need to say.

YES 100 [CENSORED] %. There will be way more than 4 endings.

@ogreb: I think it's a good thing that there is no deffinent "bad guy" it gives the player a moral choice, and makes it a more unique game.

If Tactics wasn't considered canon, why would New Vegas be? They're both spin-offs.

Tactics' questionable status has nothing to do with it being a spin off. It's because it contradicts the established lore in numerous places. Obsidian has a better grasp on the Fallout world than MicroForte did, they replayed all of the games, they researched the lore, so they know what they're doing.

Not to mention they are Fallout 2, hell maybe even Fallout devs. So they should know the lore like their hair.

The fact that a lot of them worked on FO2 is even more evidence that this will be considered canon.

The wiki says that information about Tactics being semi-canon and not fully canon comes from Bethesda.

i frankly believe that fallout 1 and 2 are canon, fallout tactics is its own game in its own universe just as BoS and fallout 3 are. i dont think new vegas will be canon, but it could be. NV could be canon to 1 and 2. then fallout 3 would be a stand alone game. whose to say tactics and BoS arent canon to each other. whose to say there isnt 7 different fallout universes, that was created from all the nukes going off. the univer split and made different versions of its self in which all these different things happened. would that make it canon though?

Are people really having that much difficulty in regards to what is canon and what is not? Fallout:New Vegas is canon, because Bethesda said so the simple fact of them creating it. And it doesn't hurt that some of the original series creators are developing it.

It is funny because the canon war raged with many older star trek fans because of JJ Abrams new star trek universe.

The game will be cannon, because these are the creators of the Fallout2 and they are telling some stories from that game so there is alot cannon from that part and also, i think Todd Howard and his team let them do the game so they know where they go for Fallout 4 it would make sense for them to do that cause they do not know all cannon stories for fallout and i also liken this game in the same vane as Vice City not talking about gameplay , im talk how it will bring the stories into other games,to tell one big story one day cause i belive Fallout will come to and in Fallout 4 i do not see it going past that game . It would only make sense to that.

It is really frustrating when you have a good discussion going and someone comes in an without reading a single post and interjects something...
It doesn't matter who original developers are, they have no rights, Bethesda bought them, they get to say what is canon in the fallout universe. That being said i doubt they would refute anything already published and since Obsidian is making this game under Bethesda they are required to abide by Bethesdas canon. It has already been made clear that Bethesda limited a few things Obsidian wanted to do because they felt it would interfere.

Bethesda own it, therefore what they put into it is Canon. Oblivion are under licence from Bethesda, therefore whatever they put into it is canon, as it has Bethesda's approval. Alien motherships? Like it or not, it is now canon. Outcasts? Canon. Mr House? Canon. etc
